Droze and Autore have their day at Africa Day

In Tom Brown Park on Saturday morning, 23 May 2015, it was just minutes away from the start of the fourth annual Tallahassee, Florida, Africa Day 5K. Maclay coach Gary Droze jogged up to me.

“I need to pick your brain,” he said. “Is it really 5K if you run on the trail from Connor Boulevard to Weems Road and back?”

That was the ground that the Africa Day race was going to cover. I assured him that whether through design or coincidence, that stretch of the Goose Pond Trail really was almost exactly 2500 meters long.

“That's good!” said Droze. “I was worried that this race was going to be 2.9 or 3.2 miles long.”

So far as competition was concerned, a little bit of extra distance or a slight deficit from the regulation 3.1 miles wasn't going to make a difference to Droze. Soon after the race started the Maclay School track coach was out in front, leading the field of 46 athletes up the trail towards Weems Road. He was farther ahead at the turnaround and continued to widen the lead during the trek toward Connor Boulevard. When Droze crossed the finish line in a winning 17:04 the next runner was half a mile behind him.

Alese Autore, the top woman in the Africa Day 5K, was that second finisher. Autore led the women's competition from the start. Less than half a mile into the race she was running second overall, and for the latter four kilometers of the five kilometer race, her only running companion was her dog. Autore covered the 3.1-mile course in 20:30.

Lincoln High frosh Franz Roeder was the second male finisher, third overall in 21:03. Swift Creek Middle School eighth-grader Calvin McGinnis was fourth overall in 21:03. FAMU professor Mike LaBossiere was fifth in 21:14.

Jena Mickel was second on the women's side, finishing eighth overall in 23:11. Karen McGinnis was the top woman master and third female finisher, placing ninth overall in 25:02.

Lin's and Adriani's fast shoes prevail at Red Shoe

Reikan LinAt the third annual Red Shoes Run, the only way Reikan Lin could beat Tony Guillen was by running his best 10K ever. So Lin did just that, posting a 36:52 to win the 19 April 2014 race through Tallahassee's Southwood community.

"It was a freaky race," said Lin. "My PR before was 38:18 and I ran 36:52."

Master runner Guillen finished runner-up in 37:07. Micah Adriani took the women's title, placing third overall in 41:05. Jennifer Shafer was the first woman master, 17th overall in 47:11.

Tony GuillenIt was a gray and sunless Saturday morning in Southwood for the race. Even though an overnight rain had stopped, a cold mist still hung in the air. The weather didn't prevent over 500 athletes from showing up in Southwood that morning, though. After an 8:00 AM one-mile fun run was over, the 10K and a 5K started at 8:30 AM on Esplanade Way. By a mile into the race Tony Guillen was leading the 10K field, with Reikan Lin six seconds back. Guillen widened that lead during the first half of the race, getting as much as 20 seconds ahead. During the second half, though, Lin started to close the gap. On Schoolhouse Road, with about a mile and a half to go, Lin had pulled to within seven seconds. He realized that he had a chance of catching Guillen.

On Grove Park Drive with less than a mile left in the race, Reikan Lin passed Tony Guillen. Driving for home, Lin pulled away. Back on Esplanade Way he crossed the finish line first in 36:52, a Red Shoe Run record. Guillen followed in 37:07, the first master runner. The next male across the line was Wakulla High junior Travis Parks, fifth overall in 41:40.

Micah AdrianiThe top women preceded Parks, though. Early in the race, Micah Adriani, Jillian Heddaeus, and Renee Cox shared the lead in the women's competition. During the second half of the 10K Adriani pulled away. Cox was left far behind, but Heddaeus managed to stay within shouting distance. Literally shouting distance, as it turned out.

"I wasn't sure where to go," recalled Adriani. "I had to call back to Jillian and ask, 'Which way?'"

The two athletes managed to find their way to the finish line, Adriani in 41:06 and Heddaeus next in 41:15. Renee Cox was the third woman finisher, sixth overall in 42:35.

Martinez and Adriani have their day at the Doggie Dash

Striding around the streets of Southwood, Tallahassee master runner Michael Martinez won the Correction Foundation's fourth annual Doggie Dash 5K on Saturday morning, 15 March 2014. Finishing more than 300 meters ahead of the next runners, Martinez covered the 3.1-mile course in 17:39. It was a morning for master runners, as the top four places went to over-40 athletes. Tallahassee's Thomas Konrad was second in 18:56, Crawfordville's Duane Evans was third in 19:27, and Michael LaBossiere of Tallahassee was fourth in 19:39.

It took a woman to break the masters' dominance of the top places. Finishing fifth overall in 20:26, the decidedly under-40 Micah Adriani of Tallahassee took the women's title. An even younger Tallahassee runner, Renee Cox, was the women's runner-up, placing ninth overall in 20:26. Tallahassee's Vicky Droze was third in the women's standings, coming in 13th overall in 21:05. Laura Cilek was the fourth woman in, 19th overall in 21:55. Jennifer Shafer was the fifth woman and top woman master in the race, finishing 21st overall in 22:08.

After two years of offering an 8K option, the Doggie Dash returned to its original 2011 format of a single 5K race. This meant that there were fewer total athletes racing, but more than ever in the 5K. 345 finished the 3.1-mile race, the most in the four-year history of the Doggie Dash.

Linton and Adriani make it two at the Ten

Stanley Linton55:30 wasn't the fastest time for ten miles ever run in Tallahassee. 55:30 wasn't even the fastest time ever run at Gulf Winds Track Club's Ten-Mile Challenge. But 55:30 was the fastest ten miles run on the Oxbottom Manor course laid out by the Reid Vannoy in 2010. And 55:30 was fast enough for Stanley Linton to win his second straight Ten-Mile Challenge title at the 26th annual edition of the race on Saturday morning, 7 December 2013. It was apparently a good morning for repeat wins, because 2012 women's champion Micah Adriani also successfully defended her title, finishing 26th overall in 1:13:42.

Dan NixThe morning of the race was foggy, humid, and warm--weather that might have been pleasant in July, but this was December. Like the previous year's race, Vince Molosky, the race champ in 2009 and 2010, started out near the front with Stanley Linton. This time around, though, Linton dropped Molosky during the first mile. After two miles Linton was running alone, 200 yards out in front. Dan Nix had passed Molosky to take over second place. At the halfway point Linton was out in front by a quarter mile and still adding to his lead. Nix held second, but Nate Kaiser had overtaken Molosky to move into third. In fifth, Gary Droze was losing ground to Kaiser, but gaining on Molosky.

Nate Kaiser
The course was twice around a five-mile loop, and the second lap was a lonely one for Linton. The Florida State University sophomore's lead grew to nearly half a mile before he finished with a win in 55:30. Dan Nix held on to second place, running 58:16. Nate Kaiser took third in 58:50. Four-time Ten-Mile Challenge champ Gary Droze was the first master runner, passing Vince Molosky during the second half to take fourth with a 59:15. Molosky finished fifth in 60:51.

Micah AdrianiIn the women's competition, Micah Adriani, Jillian Heddaeus, and Mary Anne Grayson reached the mile mark within a few seconds of each other. During the next mile, though, Adriani opened a gap on Heddaeus, and Grayson had fallen way back. It was Adriani's race after that, but Grayson would come back to overtake Heddaeus. So would Urska Dobersek and 2011 women's champion Katie Sherron. Adriani finished the race with the women's title and a 300-meter lead in 73:42. Thomasville's Mary Anne Grayson was the women's runner-up, coming in 31st overall in 1:15:17. Urska Dobersek closed to finish third in the women's standings, 32nd overall in 1:15:31. Katie Sherron was fourth in the women's standings, 33rd overall in 76:35. Jillian Heddaeus, after challenging for the lead early, was fifth for the women, 34th overall in 1:16:45.

Tony GuillenOn the Ten-Mile Challenge course there's a hill about a mile from the end of the five-mile loop that had more than a few runners questioning their desire to go around a second time. Fortunately for those athletes and for anyone else who didn't want to go ten miles that morning, there was a five-mile option. After finishing runner-up in the 2012 Five-Mile Road Race, Tallahassee master runner Tony Guillen won the 2013 race, clocking 30:51. Bainbridge High School sophomore Perry Waddell was second in 33:32. His father, Bainbridge master runner Greg Waddell, was third in 33:38. Vicky Droze was the first woman across the finish line, fifth overall in 35:38. Emily Ness of Capital City Runner's was the second woman in the five-mile race, seventh overall in 37:58. Third in the women's standings was the first woman master runner, Paul O'Neill, ninth overall in 38:18.

Molosky and Adriani are wagging in Wakulla

Micah Adriani and Vince MoloskyThe event that serves as a reminder to always bring water, insect repellent, and a sense of humor with you to the races--the Mike-the-Dog Five-Mile Race--was back in the Wakulla State Forest for the fourth straight summer on Sunday morning, 21 July 2013. And it was a morning start this year, 8:30 AM instead of the 2:00 PM start imposed on the runners in the 2012 race.

The defending champion in the five-mile race, Juan Ordoñez, was on the starting line, but so was the 2011 title-holder, Vince Molosky. Molosky and Maclay School cross-country coach Gary Droze left Juan Ordoñez and everyone else behind soon after the start. After that they set about slugging it out through the forest to see which of them would go home with the win in 2013. In the end Molosky ran away from Droze to triumph in 28:52. Droze came in at 29:18, good for second place and the first master spot. Trailing the leaders by half a kilometer, Tallahassee master runner Jack McDermott was third in 3:04.

Fourth place overall went to the women's champion, Micah Adriani of Tallahassee. Adriani ran 32:38, finishing nearly 800 meters ahead of her nearest challenger in the women's competition, Renee Cox. Cox finished the race ninth overall in 36:03.

A total of 28 athletes completed the five-mile run.

Sullivan and Adriani won't bog down on the Swamp Forest Trail

Gulf Winds Track Club Summer Trail SeriesThe Tallahassee Parks and Recreation Department apparently didn't consult with a marketing expert when they were naming the hiking trails in Phipps Park. "Redbug Trail" suggests an unpleasant infestation of arthropods. "Swamp Forest Trail" evokes images of an impenetrable morass of leeches and water mossasins. The pictures that "Coon Bottom Loop" brings to mind aren't any more inviting.

The names are what they are, though, and Bobby York chose the Swamp Forest Trail as the venue for the second race in Gulf Winds Track Club's 2013 Summer Trail Series.

Despite the name, 124 runners, right under the limit, showed on Saturday morning, July 13, for the Swamp Forest Trail 4-1/2 mile run. Kevin Sullivan of Capital City Runners was there. Sullivan has run cross country at the NCAA championships and the world championships, and he was also the winner of the first race in the trail series, the Cadillac Trail Run on June 22. The outcome was no different on the Swamp Forest Trail as Sullivan ran to a 30:19 win. Charn McAllister finished runner-up for the second time in the series, but he had to outrace Bryce Van Dam to do it, 30:38 to 30:39. Bing Xu was the fastest master runner on the trail, finishing tenth overall in 34:12.

Stephanie Liles-Weyant had won the women's title at the first race in the series, but Micah Adriani was in the field at the second race. Adriani ran 34:12 in the Swamp Forest Trail Run, good for ninth overall and finishing as the first female. Liles-Weyant was the second woman finisher and first woman master, 15th overall in 36:15.

The third trail series race is the Magnolia Trail Run in Tom Brown Park on Saturday, 27 July 2013. Don’t be fooled by that name, either; the Magnolia Trail is rugged. The fourth and final race in the series will be back in Phipps Park on the Red Bug Trail. I can’t attest to the accuracy of that trail’s name, but I would bring the insect repellent just in case.

Sullivan and Adriani are the big dogs at Potluck

Hot TamaleUSA Track and Field rules for starting a race follow the International Association of Athletic Federation rules. For races of 400 meters or less, the commands given to the runners are "On your marks," "Set," and then the starting gun. In races longer than 400 meters, the commands are "On your marks" followed by the gun.

At Gulf Winds Track Club's 16th annual Potluck Four Mile, the starting command was Hot Tamale singing "Johnny B. Goode," with the runners going on the final chord.

Stanley Linton, Micah Adriani, Kevin Sullivan, Katie ShowmanThe Potluck has always been a bit different, though. For one thing it's a prediction run, with the winner determined by the runner who runs closest to the time she (or he) predicts before the event. Timepieces aren't allowed on the course, naturally.

But at the front of the Potluck field are plenty of runners who are running for speed, forget about the predictions. They are akin to racing greyhounds. At a dog track, a trainer was asked about the mechanical rabbit. Were the dogs truly fooled? Did they actually think the cutout was a real rabbit?

"No," was the response. "They don't have to make it look like a rabbit. Those dogs will chase anything that moves."

Stanley LintonThat's the same instinct driving the faster runners at Potluck. There may be no speed awards, but if they are running, they will chase or race anyone else afoot, even if it throws off their prediction. It's a compulsion. It's part of what makes them front-of-the-pack runners.

Stanley Linton, who had already won 13 races during 2013, is one of those front-of-the-pack runners. Soon after the last chord of "Johnny B. Goode" had faded, he was out in front of over 200 athletes, leading them from the Phipps Park youth athletic fields towards the soccer fields at the Meadows. Crossing the soccer fields, the Florida State mathematics student was about thirty meters up on the next runner, Kevin Sullivan of Capital City Runners.

Kevin SullivanFrom there the race headed onto the Phipps Park trail system. The Potluck is a cross-country race, and in a cross-country race you bet on the four-time Big Ten Conference cross-country champion. Sullivan, that four-time champion, caught Linton just past the halfway mark, where the runners started the long climb back up out of the Lake Jackson basin. After that it was Sullivan's race. The three-time Canadian Olympian built up a lead of nearly 200 meters on his way to the finish line, clocking 21:17 for the four miles. Linton was second in 21:56. After that it was quite a wait for the rest of the field, with Nate Kaiser (23:30) and Roger Schmidt (24:07) taking the next two places. Fifth place and the top master spot went to Michael Martinez in 24:19.

Micah Adriani, Katie ShowmanIn the women's competition, defending champion Katie Showman was just a step or two behind two-time champion Micah Adriani with a mile to go. That mile made all the difference, though, as Adriani ran away from Showman to win the women's title, her third, by almost a minute, placing 20th in 26:24. Showman was the second woman in, 26th in 27:23. Renee Cox (39th, 28:59) and Vicky Droze (44th, 29:57) were the next two female finishers. Paula O'Neill, the eighth female finisher, was the first master woman, coming in 55th overall at 31:50.

In the prediction competition, Bainbridge High's Chase Harris, the sixth finisher, was one of four athletes who were just a second off in their forecast. Harris ran 24:46 after forecasting a 24:45. Buddy Levins, Chris O'Kelley, and Mike Burns were also just a second off of their predicted times.

Red bandannas waveIn memory of Reid Vannoy, who had recently passed from ALS, many runners wore a red bandanna as a sweatband, which was something of a signature with Reid. Just before the start of the race, the bandannas waved in salute to Vannoy.

237 athletes finished the four mile run.

Molosky back on top in the "Tails & Trails" 10K

Vince MoloskyAfter a one-year absence from the winner's circle of the Tallahassee's "Tails and Trails" 10K, Vince Molosky won the race for a seventh time on Saturday morning, 4 May 2013. Molosky clocked 36:19 for the 6.2-mile run over the hills and trails of Tom Brown Park and Lafayette Heritage Park. A minute behind Molosky, Leon High School distance runner James Dodson finished runner-up in 37:19. In third place, Jeff Nielsen was the fastest master runner in the field, finishing in 42:09.
Lindsey Pfau

Lindsey Pfau won the women's division by an even wider margin than Molosky enjoyed in the men's race. Finishing 14th overall, Pfau outran her closest rival, Kelly Brennan, 46:31 to 47:35. Top master honors among the women went to Carroll Hageseth, the seventh woman finisher. Hageseth placed 31st overall with a 51:12. 207 athletes completed the 10K.

In the shorter event, Linton ran a "Tails and Trails" record of 16:26, while Stephen Cox ran 16:51 to finish second in the field of over 500. David Knauf was the fastest master in the 5K, taking 5th in 18:16. Records fall at fourth Red Fox Trot 5K

Red Fox Trot 5KIt was a cool morning and a morning for records at Tallahassee's Roberts Elementary School. In the fourth annual Red Fox Trot 5K on Saturday, 19 January 2013, the winners set a new men's course record and a new women's course record. The number of finishers, 268, was also an all-time high for the race.

Moments after the 8:00 AM start behind Roberts Elementary School, Stanley Linton was in the lead. That didn't change during the 3.1-mile tour of the Dublin Downs community; the Florida State University freshman returned to Roberts Elementary and the finish line with a 200-meter lead and a winning time of 16:10. Linton's time crushed the previous course record of 17:00, set at the 2012 Red Fox Trot by Lincoln High distance runner Trevor Touchton. Linton was followed across the finish line by runner-up Nate Kaiser in 16:53. Vince Molosky finished third in 17:18. Tallahassee's Jay Wallace was the fastest master runner in the Red Fox Trot, placing sixth overall in 17:52.

The Red Fox Trot was Stanley Linton third win in the first three weeks of 2013, his previous victories coming in the Bowlegs 5K and the Gulf Winds Track Club 30K. In women's competition, Katie Showman had also opened the year with wins at Bowlegs and the GWTC 30K. At the Red Fox Trot, though, Micah Adriani finished nearly 50 meters ahead of Showman, placing 19th overall and winning the women's title in 19:36. Showman was the second woman finisher, 22nd overall in 19:47. Ashley Daily (30th, 20:42) was the third woman and Kristine Cox (33rd, 21:04) was the fourth. The fifth woman finisher, Thomasville, Georgia runner Mary Anne Grayson, was the top woman master in the field, placing 34th overall in 21:06.
