Sullivan and Sherron come back for seconds at Potluck

Gulf Winds Track Club's 2014 Potluck Cross-Country RaceAfter being on the Canadian Olympic team three times for the 1500-meter run, Kevin Sullivan is usually thought of as a miler. He was probably already marked as such when he went sub-4:00 in the mile as a high school athlete. To regard Sullivan as only a miler, though, is to ignore his accomplishments as a cross-country runner. While competing for the University of Michigan, Sullivan won four Big Ten Conference cross-country championships between 1993 and 1997. He raced for Canada at the World Cross-Country Championships seven times from 1999 to 2006.

Sullivan is now looking at a new collection of cross-country titles, winning his second straight Potluck Four-Miler in Tallahassee’s Phipps Park on Saturday evening, 31 May 2014.

Kevin SullivanGulf Winds Track Club's 17th annual Potluck Run started from the Meridian Road Youth Sports Complex just after 6:00 PM. "This may actually be a bit longer than four miles," warned race director David Yon. Indeed it was. The runners ended up going close to 4.3 miles. Anticipating extra mileage, the athletes set off. By the time the runners had traversed the Meadows Soccer Complex and were wandering the Phipps Park trail network, Kevin Sullivan of Capital City Runners and Chris Lake were out in front of the rest of the field. Back on the trails, Sullivan ran away from Lake. Emerging from the woods, Sullivan crossed the finish line in front of Forestmeadows Athletic Center with a 300-yard lead. His time for the distance--which may have been 4.3 miles--was 23:34. Finishing second, Lake's time was 24:41. Nate Kaiser was fourth in 25:25. Vince Molosky held off Zach Deveau to take fifth, 25:46 to 25:50.

Katie SherronIn the women's competition, Renee Cox made it into the soccer fields ahead of the rest of the women's field, but not far ahead of 2012 champion Katie Sherron. Sherron overtook Cox, breaking away on the trails beyond the soccer complex. At Forestmeadows and the finish line Sherron collected her second Potluck women's title, placing 30th overall in 32:17. Cox was the women's runner-up, 34th overall in 32:47. Mary Vancore was the third woman finisher and top woman master, coming in 41st overall in 33:53.

Chris LakeUniquely in the area, the Potluck race also includes a prediction competition, rewarding the runners who most accurately predict their finish time. Because of this, Potluck competitors have to run the race without watches. With the race more than 500 yards longer than the advertised distance, though, it’s hard to say just how meaningful the prediction event was this year. Nevertheless, Jason Bowman of Tallahassee had the best prediction, running just a little more than two seconds faster than the time he had predicted.

165 athletes finished the race. In spite of dire predictions of rain, the course was almost too dry, with poor footing due to loose sand in parts. If anyone was hoping for mud, they can try again next year. The race has been run in a downpour before, and it will be again one of these years. When it comes to running trails, we all have to take potluck.

Sullivan and Ristow headline a mercifully short Run For Mercy

Kevin Sullivan and Teresa RistowTallahassee's second annual Run For Mercy on Saturday morning, 26 April 2014, wasn't quite five kilometers, but 1500 meters isn't quite a mile, and no one has ever credibly demonstrated that the Olympic 1500 meters isn't a good race. As it turns out, a three-time veteran of the Olympic 1500, Kevin Sullivan of Capital City Running, won the Run For Mercy, covering the indeterminate distance through the streets of Southwood in 13:49. Blountstown High junior Thomas Howell outkicked Jeffrey Jerald for second place, 15:19 to 15:21. Fourth place went to Kevin Chin Shue of Capital City Runners in 15:38.

Teresa Ristow, a junior-year distance runner for the Florida State University Lady Seminoles, won the Run For Mercy women's title, placing fifth overall in 15:44. Ristow had finished second in the women's division of the inaugural Run For Mercy in 2014. Christine Griggs, a sophomore Lady Seminole, was runner-up in the women's standings, coming in sixth overall in 15:59. Two more FSU distance runners, Jennifer Dunn (7th, 16:02) and Chantelle Brodie (8th, 16:04) took the next two places. Roberts Elementary School teacher Lisa Johnson (9th, 16:18) was fifth on the women's side the first woman to crack the Seminole stranglehold on the top spots. Nancy Stedman was the first woman master in the race, 34th overall in 19:37.

238 runners finished the 2014 Run For Mercy. Proceeds went to benefit Mercy Ministries of America.

Sullivan and Gutierrez win at a soaked Springtime

Kevin SullivanOn March 20, Kevin Sullivan turned 40, joining the ranks of master runners. Just nine days later he owned the Springtime 10K record for masters, winning the 39th annual race in 32:03. It was Sullivan's second straight Springtime victory. Just over a minute and a half behind Sullivan, three-time Springtime champion Chris Lake took second in 33:37. Seeley Gutierrez captured the women's title, placing 13th overall in 38:09. The top woman master was Carrie Seiberlich, third woman and 36th overall in 41:16.

More than 700 athletes finished the 6.2-mile race, but more than a few stayed away when they woke up to rain and rumbling thunder the Saturday of the race. The last lightning flashed before dawn, though, and as racetime approached the rain slowed to an intermittent drizzle. The Springtime 10K started as scheduled from in front of the Leon County Courthouse at 8:10 AM.

Gulf Winds Track Club's 2014 Springtime Road RaceVince Molosky led the field early, reaching the mile mark out front in 5:04. That was a faster pace than he was going to run that morning, though. Just after the mile Molosky was overtaken by a group of four runners; Kevin Sullivan, Eric Larson, Stephen Cox, and Chris Lake. As the leaders turned onto Lafayette Street and started their climb into the Myers Park hills, Sullivan made a break.

"I was dead even with Kevin for a mile and a quarter," recalled Cox. "Then the rest of the race happened."

Chris LakeBy the two-mile mark Kevin Sullivan had opened a twelve-second gap. Chris Lake moved ahead of Chris Larson and Stephen Cox, but he was still losing ground to Sullivan. A little more than halfway through the race Lake had a solid grip on second, and Larson had passed Cox to stake a claim on third. Sullivan was so far ahead, though, that even Lake was only occasionally catching a glimpse of him on the road ahead.

In the end, that was the order they crossed the finish line. Kevin Sullivan of Capital City Runners first in 32:03, followed by Chris Lake in 33:37, Eric Larson third in 34:16, and Stephen Cox fourth in 34:20.
Seeley Gutierrez

Seeley Gutierrez led the Springtime 10K women's field from start to finish. Katie Sherron, however, had to run down master runner Carrie Seiberlich for the runner-up spot in the women's standings. Seiberlich was the second woman through two miles, and it was only on the third mile that Sherron was able to catch her. Gutierrez never had to look back, taking the women's title in 38:09. Sherron was the second woman finisher, 26th overall in 40:09. At 41:16, Seiberlich took third on the women's side.

Seitz and Rosen speed through Southwood to Turkey Trot 15K titles

Joshua SeitzLong before anyone else arrived in Southwood for the Tallahassee Turkey Trot, there were people out there getting ready for the races. Setting up timing equipment. Stocking water tables. Delivering 56 portable toilets. Oh, and marking the course.

"I'm still sore from bending over to draw arrows on the road," said Bill McGuire after the last runner had left Southwood.

McGuire's diamond dust course markers will be gone with the next rain. But for a few hours on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 29, those arrows were appreciated by almost 5,000 athletes trying to find their way around Southwood in one of the four races of the 38th annual Turkey Trot.

Gulf Winds Track Club's 2013 Tallahassee Turkey TrotAfter the one-mile fun run at 8:00 AM, the three longer races--15K, 10K, and 5K--all started at 8:30 from the same starting line on Esplanade Way. In the feature event, the 15K, Josh Seitz set the early pace, leading Caleb Carmichael and five-time Turkey Trot champ Chris Lake. By halfway through the race Seitz, a volunteer assistant track coach at Florida State, was almost a minute ahead and going away, leaving Carmichael and Lake in a race for second. Seitz cruised through the second half of the Turkey Trot, winning the 9.3-mile run in 49:59, more than a quarter mile ahead of the next runner. Carmichael finished second in 51:30, with Lake third in 53:13. In fourth place at 55:05, Gary Droze was the first master runner in the race.
Sheryl Rosen and Seeley Gutierrez

On the women's side, Sheryl Rosen ran 57:11, her fastest Turkey Trot 15K yet, to win a second straight Turkey Trot women's title. It was the Tallahassee lawyer's fifth win at the 9.3-mile race in the last eight years. Behind Rosen, 2010 Turkey Trot champ Allison Eagen finished second in the women's standings with a 1:02:07, good for 17th overall. Adriana Piekarewicz was right behind Eagen, 18th overall in 1:02:22.

Bill Clift, Remy Tamer, Kevin Sullivan, Peter Wood, and Stanley LintonWith the 15K, the 10K, and the 5K starting together, you'd expect the athletes in the shortest race up front. True to those expectations University of North Florida freshman Joseph Garcia, the early leader in the 5K, had everyone in the three races chasing him--more than 4,000 runners--as he raced up Shumard Oak Boulevard. Unfortunately for the Lincoln High alumnus, he was setting a pace he couldn't handle. Shortly after the mile mark, Kevin Sullivan of Capital City Runners passed Garcia, and that was the race. Sullivan went on to win the 3.1-mile race in 15:28, the fastest road 5K in Tallahassee this year. Remy Tamer and Peter Wood also overtook Garcia, finishing second and third in 15:56 and 16:24. Garcia was fourth in 16:28. Halfway through the 5K, Emily Ness of Capital City Runners led the women's competition in the race, with Lisa Johnson only four seconds back. Ness couldn't be caught, though, and beat Johnson for the title 18:36 to 18:45.

Wakulla High School cross-country teamAmong the volunteers on the course, the Wakulla High cross-country team staffed a water table out near the seven-mile mark of the 15K course. It wasn't part of the 10K course, so the Wakulla crew never got to see their alumnus, Stanley Linton, race by. Nevertheless, Linton trekked out there after the race to help his alma mater hand out water to 15K runners. Some run, some volunteer. A few do both.

Sullivan and Liles-Weyant master the Magnolia Trail

Kevin SullivanAround midsummer the Magnolia Trail in Tallahassee's Tom Brown Park is shrouded in lush vegetation. The air is perfumed with ripening muscadines and kudzu blossoms. Magnolia may have the scent of a lady, but she's a tough broad. Perched along the south slopes of the Lake Lafayette basin, the narrow trail is all up and down and up and down. Tree roots lurk on the treadway to trip the unwary. More than a hundred athletes got to experience Magnolia's spite firsthand on Saturday morning, 27 July 2013, at the third race of the Gulf Winds Track Club's Summer Trail Series, the Magnolia Trail 3.5-Mile Run.

Race director Bobby York sent the 117 competitors on their way about 8:10 AM. Racing through Tom Brown Park along the paved Goose Pond Trail, after a quarter mile the runners funneled into the woods on the Magnolia Trail. Most of the trail is only wide enough for a single runner, making it almost a continuous no-passing zone. Charn McAllister, the first runner to reach then Magnolia trail, was well aware of this.

Charn McAllister"I knew the course well enough to know all the places you can pass," said McAllister.

Using that knowledge, McAllister was able to accelerate on the wide spots on the course, holding off challengers and maintaining the lead for over three miles. But with a mile to go, while McAllister continued to set the pace, four-time Canadian Olympian Kevin Sullivan had moved into second place. Sullivan had won the first two of the four races in the trail series, and was aiming for win number three. A quarter mile from the finish line, the course widened as the runners crossed the Goose Pond Trail. Sullivan struck.
Doug Bell

"He was like a bullet," said McAllister.

Sullivan charged home, winning the race in 21:44. McAllister held off a late-race challenge by Bryce Van Dam to take second, 21:55 to 21:56. Zach DeVeau was fourth in 22:17. Doug Bell was the fastest master runner in the field, finishing fifth in 22:35.

Stephanie Liles-WeyantTallahassee master runner Stephanie Liles-Weyant had won the women's title at the first trail series race, the Cadillac Trail Run in Tom Brown Park on 22 June 2013. But Liles-Weyant finished second to Micah Adriani on 13 July 2013 at the next trail run, the Swamp Forest 4.5 Mile. Back in Tom Brown Park in the Magnolia Trail race, it looked like she might have to settle for runner-up once again. Renee Cox grabbed the early lead in the women's competition and held it through the first two miles. Liles-Weyant was never far behind, though, running patiently. During the third mile she made her move, blowing past Cox. After that it was Liles-Weyant's race as she went on to place 13th overall in 24:45, the first woman across the finish line. Cox was the next female finisher, coming in 19th overall in 25:30. Ashley Daily was the third woman, her 27:04 good for 23rd overall.

114 of the 117 starters managed to finish the Magnolia Trail Run. The fourth and final race in the series is the Redbug Trail 4.5-Mile Run, scheduled for 6:00 PM ET Saturday evening, 3 August 2013, on the Redbug Trail at Phipps Park in Tallahassee.

Sullivan and Adriani won't bog down on the Swamp Forest Trail

Gulf Winds Track Club Summer Trail SeriesThe Tallahassee Parks and Recreation Department apparently didn't consult with a marketing expert when they were naming the hiking trails in Phipps Park. "Redbug Trail" suggests an unpleasant infestation of arthropods. "Swamp Forest Trail" evokes images of an impenetrable morass of leeches and water mossasins. The pictures that "Coon Bottom Loop" brings to mind aren't any more inviting.

The names are what they are, though, and Bobby York chose the Swamp Forest Trail as the venue for the second race in Gulf Winds Track Club's 2013 Summer Trail Series.

Despite the name, 124 runners, right under the limit, showed on Saturday morning, July 13, for the Swamp Forest Trail 4-1/2 mile run. Kevin Sullivan of Capital City Runners was there. Sullivan has run cross country at the NCAA championships and the world championships, and he was also the winner of the first race in the trail series, the Cadillac Trail Run on June 22. The outcome was no different on the Swamp Forest Trail as Sullivan ran to a 30:19 win. Charn McAllister finished runner-up for the second time in the series, but he had to outrace Bryce Van Dam to do it, 30:38 to 30:39. Bing Xu was the fastest master runner on the trail, finishing tenth overall in 34:12.

Stephanie Liles-Weyant had won the women's title at the first race in the series, but Micah Adriani was in the field at the second race. Adriani ran 34:12 in the Swamp Forest Trail Run, good for ninth overall and finishing as the first female. Liles-Weyant was the second woman finisher and first woman master, 15th overall in 36:15.

The third trail series race is the Magnolia Trail Run in Tom Brown Park on Saturday, 27 July 2013. Don’t be fooled by that name, either; the Magnolia Trail is rugged. The fourth and final race in the series will be back in Phipps Park on the Red Bug Trail. I can’t attest to the accuracy of that trail’s name, but I would bring the insect repellent just in case.

Sullivan and Liles-Weyant lead part one of the celebration of trails

Kevin SullivanThe United States may not embrace trail running, but trail running is certainly important in the history of the nation. Consider the episode of the Walking Purchase. During the 1730s, John and Thomas Penn produced a document dated 1686 stating that the Delaware Indians had promised to sell their lands to the colony of Pennsylvania to a limit as far as a man could walk in a day and a half. The Penns then proceeded to hire three professional distance runners, clear a trail, and set up aid stations. The "walk" began on 19 September 1737. After a day and a half of running the swiftest of the athletes, Edward Marshall, had covered 70 miles and the Delaware had lost 1.2 million acres of their land. Perhaps the Native Americans should have hired some race-walk judges.

Search history, but you won't find that kind of outcome riding on a baseball game.

Gulf Winds Track Club's 2013 Summer Trail Series Race #1Tallahassee's Gulf Winds Track Club decided to celebrate the American tradition of trail running with a Summer Trail Series of four races, organized by Bobby York. On Saturday morning, 22 June 2013, athletes gathered in Tom Brown Park for the first race of the series, five to six miles of racing on the Cadillac Trail. The event wasn't without problems. After marking the course the previous day, a summer shower washed away the chalk arrows. York and his team went back to the trail in the dark and re-marked the course, this time with pin flags. Then on the morning of the race, York had to delay the start of the trail run--three participants in the children's mile had run off course and had to be found before the main event could begin. Finally, at 8:30, all of York's work and planning came to fruition as 121 competitors set off to run the Cadillac Trail. Kevin Sullivan of Capital City Runners went right to the front, which is what you would expect from a four-time Big Ten Conference cross-country champion and seven-time member of the Canadian national cross-country team. True to expectations, Sullivan stayed out front for the entire tour of the Cadillac trail, finishing with a winning 37:38 for the run. Sullivan was followed across the finish line by runner-up Charn McAllister at 39:26, then Bryce Van Dam at 39:57 and Eric Godin at 40:15. In fifth place at 43:04, Tony Guillen of Tallahassee was the first master finisher.

Stephanie Liles-WeyantTriathlete Stephanie Liles-Weyant was the first woman as well as the first woman master. Liles-Weyant placed ninth overall in 45:07, finishing more than two minutes ahead of the female runner-up, Brook Pace. Pace was 14th overall in 47:12.

The Gulf Winds Track Club's Summer Trail Series continues with a 4.5-mile run over the Swamp Forest Trail in Phipps Park at 8:00 AM on July 13, a 3.5-mile run over the Magnolia Trail in Tom Brown Park at 8:00 AM on July 27, and concludes with a 4.5-mile run over the Redbug Trail in Phipps Park at 6:00 PM on August 3.

Sullivan and Adriani are the big dogs at Potluck

Hot TamaleUSA Track and Field rules for starting a race follow the International Association of Athletic Federation rules. For races of 400 meters or less, the commands given to the runners are "On your marks," "Set," and then the starting gun. In races longer than 400 meters, the commands are "On your marks" followed by the gun.

At Gulf Winds Track Club's 16th annual Potluck Four Mile, the starting command was Hot Tamale singing "Johnny B. Goode," with the runners going on the final chord.

Stanley Linton, Micah Adriani, Kevin Sullivan, Katie ShowmanThe Potluck has always been a bit different, though. For one thing it's a prediction run, with the winner determined by the runner who runs closest to the time she (or he) predicts before the event. Timepieces aren't allowed on the course, naturally.

But at the front of the Potluck field are plenty of runners who are running for speed, forget about the predictions. They are akin to racing greyhounds. At a dog track, a trainer was asked about the mechanical rabbit. Were the dogs truly fooled? Did they actually think the cutout was a real rabbit?

"No," was the response. "They don't have to make it look like a rabbit. Those dogs will chase anything that moves."

Stanley LintonThat's the same instinct driving the faster runners at Potluck. There may be no speed awards, but if they are running, they will chase or race anyone else afoot, even if it throws off their prediction. It's a compulsion. It's part of what makes them front-of-the-pack runners.

Stanley Linton, who had already won 13 races during 2013, is one of those front-of-the-pack runners. Soon after the last chord of "Johnny B. Goode" had faded, he was out in front of over 200 athletes, leading them from the Phipps Park youth athletic fields towards the soccer fields at the Meadows. Crossing the soccer fields, the Florida State mathematics student was about thirty meters up on the next runner, Kevin Sullivan of Capital City Runners.

Kevin SullivanFrom there the race headed onto the Phipps Park trail system. The Potluck is a cross-country race, and in a cross-country race you bet on the four-time Big Ten Conference cross-country champion. Sullivan, that four-time champion, caught Linton just past the halfway mark, where the runners started the long climb back up out of the Lake Jackson basin. After that it was Sullivan's race. The three-time Canadian Olympian built up a lead of nearly 200 meters on his way to the finish line, clocking 21:17 for the four miles. Linton was second in 21:56. After that it was quite a wait for the rest of the field, with Nate Kaiser (23:30) and Roger Schmidt (24:07) taking the next two places. Fifth place and the top master spot went to Michael Martinez in 24:19.

Micah Adriani, Katie ShowmanIn the women's competition, defending champion Katie Showman was just a step or two behind two-time champion Micah Adriani with a mile to go. That mile made all the difference, though, as Adriani ran away from Showman to win the women's title, her third, by almost a minute, placing 20th in 26:24. Showman was the second woman in, 26th in 27:23. Renee Cox (39th, 28:59) and Vicky Droze (44th, 29:57) were the next two female finishers. Paula O'Neill, the eighth female finisher, was the first master woman, coming in 55th overall at 31:50.

In the prediction competition, Bainbridge High's Chase Harris, the sixth finisher, was one of four athletes who were just a second off in their forecast. Harris ran 24:46 after forecasting a 24:45. Buddy Levins, Chris O'Kelley, and Mike Burns were also just a second off of their predicted times.

Red bandannas waveIn memory of Reid Vannoy, who had recently passed from ALS, many runners wore a red bandanna as a sweatband, which was something of a signature with Reid. Just before the start of the race, the bandannas waved in salute to Vannoy.

237 athletes finished the four mile run.
