Caleb Carmichael and Hannah Hosay come home to win the Tallahassee Turkey Trot

In the United States, Thanksgiving is a time for homecoming. If you don't believe that, just try to book an airline flight during the Thanksgiving weekend. There is an especially big Thanksgiving homecoming event for athletes in Tallahassee, Florida, and that's Gulf Winds Track Club's annual Tallahassee Turkey Trot Road Race. Caleb Carmichael was among the thousands in Southwood for the race on Thanksgiving morning, 23 November 2023. Carmichael lives in Pensacola where he coaches cross-country at the University of West Florida, but a couple of decades back he was a high school cross-country runner in Tallahassee. He returned to win the Turkey Trot 15K by over 200 meters, running 51:23. In the women's competition, Hannah Hosay made a trip back home from the University of Florida in Gainesville to score a Turkey Trot 15K women's title, placing ninth overall in 60:57.

The Turkey Trot 15K was the longest of three races that started from Esplanade Way in Southwood at 8:30 AM on Thanksgiving Day. Caleb Carmichael set the early pace for the 15K field, but during the second kilometer Trevor Touchton took over the lead. By the four kilometer mark, Touchton, an alum of Lincoln High and the United States Military Academy, had opened a gap of ten seconds.

But Carmichael came back. The coach overtook Touchton by the midway point of the race, and then pulled away during the second half, going on to win in 51:23. Touchton took second in 52:08. Tallahassee's Leonardo Canete was the first master runner in the race, coming in third overall in 55:39. Mason Romuald, a senior on the Lincoln High cross-country team, took fourth in 57:37.

On the women's side, Hannah Hosay never had any challengers during the 15K. By halfway the microbiology student was already 600 meters ahead, and that lead had grown to over 1200 meters by the time she crossed the finish line in a winning 60:57. Tallahassee's Melanie Leitman was the women's runner-up, placing 21st overall in 66:34. Kara Guinan, formerly a cross-country runner at Keene State University, was the third woman and 37th overall in 73:07. Laura Reina was the first woman master and fifth female finisher in the 15K, 51st overall in 76:46.

Where high school cross-country runners shone in the Turkey Trot 10K, collegiate harriers led the way in the 5K.

Andrew McGinnis

1500 meters into the race, Wyatt Townsend of William and Mary was setting the pace for the field, closely followed by Nathan Reffitt of the University of Tampa. A little bit farther back, Ben Kirbo was running in third, wearing Colorado State colors. Behind Kirbo was Andrew McGinnis, a second-year runner for the Samford University Bulldogs.

McGinnis overtook Kirbo, then Reffitt and Townsend. With a kilometer to go, the Samford Bulldog had a five-second lead. He widened that gap on the way to the finish line, which he reached in a winning 15:04. Townsend held off Reffitt for second, 15:17 to 15:18. Kirbo took fourth in 15:26. Hans Hassell was the first master runner in the short race and the 21st male finisher, 22nd overall in 18:53.

Chris O'Kelley and Jamila Allen are the newest champs on Old Centerville Road

There are runners who feel very proprietary about Old Centerville Road. Some even think they were the first to run on that clay road through the Red Hills. They're wrong. High school athletes were trying out Old Centerville in the 1970s. Before that, there were probably children running after the school buses come to fetch the students from Moccasin Gap. In the 1800s, field hands were trotting alongside wagons taking cotton to market. Old Centerville Road has been around for a long time.

Chris O'Kelley
Chris O'Kelley

Gulf Winds Track Club came to Old Centerville Road in 2006, using it and Sunny Hill Road as the course for their yearly 30K. Chris O'Kelley raced the Gulf Winds Track Club 30K for the first time on Saturday morning, 18 January 2020, winning the 43rd annual race in 1:56:45 and averaging 6:16 for each of the 18.6 miles. Jamila Allen was the first woman in the 30K, placing eighteenth overall in 2:28:05.

The 30K and a concurrent 15K started from Bradley's Pond just after 9:00 AM. O'Kelley led the 30K early, accompanied by master runner Tony Guillen, who was running the 15K. Then they were overtaken by Michael Nesius.

"He caught me and Tony at about three miles," said O'Kelley. "Then at the turnaround he was thirty seconds ahead. After the turnaround he started to slow down, and I caught him near twelve miles."

The turnaround was the halfway point in the 30K.

Michael Nesius

"I went out in about an hour, and came back in 56 minutes," said O'Kelley. "I was happy to negative split it."

Returning faster than he had gone out, O'Kelly opened a huge gap on Nesius while running a winning 1:56:45. Nesius took second in 2:02:46. David Graf was the first master runner in the 30k, placing third overall in 2:04:31. Thomas Howell took fourth with a 2:06:17.

Jamila Allen

In the women's competition, Jamila Allen was not a contender for the lead during the opening miles of the 30K. For the first half of the race, Allen and the rest of the women's field were chasing Jenny Early.

"I was probably fifth early in the race," said Allen. "I was second at the turnaround and then I passed the woman who was leading on the last hill on Sunny Hill Road."

Laura Reina

Allen and Early crested that hill during the twelfth mile of the race. From there, Allen left Early and the other women behind, returning to Bradley's Pond and the finish line to take the women's title in 2:28:05. Laura Reina was the first woman master and second female finisher, twentieth overall in 2:35:41. Lourena Maxwell, women's champ in the 2019 Gulf Winds Track Club 30K, was the third woman and 21st overall in 2020, running 2:36:59. Jenny Early, after setting the pace for the women's field for more than half of the race, was fourth in the women's standings with a 2:38:52, placing 22nd overall

Almost from the start, Carmichael, the West Florida University cross-country coach, was ahead of everyone in the shorter race. He stayed there, winning the 9.3-mile race in 51:21. Master runner Laura DiBella similarly led the women's field from start to finish, taking the women's title in 63:08 while placing tenth overall.

Carmichael and Cox seize Sizzler 5K titles

St. George Island Sizzler 5KIn 16 years, no one has ever accused the Tates Hell Track Club of misrepresentation when it comes to the name of their summer race, the St. George Island Sizzler 5K. But just to make sure, in 2012 race director Hobson Fulmer moved the event from the hot month of June to the hotter month of August. As an addition guarantee, he changed the starting time from 7:30 PM to 6:00 PM. You wouldn't want those temperatures to start going down at race time, would you?

So for the 16th annual race on 10 August 2013, it was hot. Sizzling, even. You have to grant the Tates Hell Track Club that.

Caleb CarmichaelNot that there really is a Tates Hell Track Club. Or is there? On the starting line of this year's Sizzler, Hobson Fulmer announced to the crowd, "You are now all members of the Tates Hell Track Club!" So credit the ethereal organization with 318 new members--350 if you also include the runners in the one-mile fun run from half an hour earlier.

Moments after learning from Fulmer that they had just joined Franklin County's foremost athletic organization, the runners were set loose to head east on Pine Street. A quarter mile after the start, University of West Florida cross-country coach Caleb Carmichael was setting the pace. Stanley Linton, runner-up in the 2012 Sizzler, was right with Carmichael, as was David Hein. By the mile mark, just after the runners started back west on Gorrie Drive, Carmichael had opened up a gap on Linton. Hein was another 20 seconds back and fading, having just given up third place to Jonathan Ross. In fifth place, Jack Redwing also had the struggling Hein in his sights.

Stanley Linton
At about halfway the race went by Lighthouse Park. Caleb Carmichael was running strong, appearing to have broken the race open. Stanley Linton was still in second, but steadily falling farther behind, although he remained 20 seconds up on Jonathan Ross. Ross was being stalked by Jack Redwing, who had already put away David Hein.

Jack KlatskyThe second half of the 5K was all Carmichael's. The UWF coach built up a lead of nearly 400 meters, crossing the finish line in 16:16 as the 2013 Sizzler champion--adding a third Sizzler title to his wins in 2003 and 2004. Behind Carmichael, Jack Redwing had picked off Jonathan Ross and was starting to move up on second place and Stanley Linton. Redwing closed to within eight seconds, but Linton made it home in second place at 17:25, while Redwing settled for third in 17:33. Michael Martinez moved up to fourth during the second half of the race, finishing in 17:54 as the first master runner.

Renee Cox
The Sizzler's defending female champion was on the starting line in 2013--thirteen-year-old Polina Bondarenko was back from Illinois. Bondarenko led the women's competition early, but by the mile mark Tallahassee's Renee Cox had taken over. At midway Bondarenko was fighting with Wakulla High's Madison Harris for second place while Cox cruised up front. Cox went on to take the women's title, finishing 24th overall in 20:28. Madison Harris was the second female finisher, placing 28th overall in 21:03. Bondarenko improved her 2012 time more than half a minute, running 21:22 to finish 34th overall and third in the female standings. Thomasville, Georgia athlete Mary Anne Grayson finished at the top of the master women's standings; Grayson ran 22:18 and placed 44th overall, the sixth woman in the race.

The field of 318 finishers was a record crowd for the Sizzler, a benefit for the Franklin County Humane Society.

Carmichael and Holt lead the stampede at Critter Run

2012 Critter RunSince the inception of the race in 1986, Dothan, Alabama's Critter Run 5K has become a summer distance running fixture in the southeast Alabama / southwest Georgia / northwest Florida tri-state area. Each year the race features a different animal; the "critter" for the 27th annual race on 28 July 2012 was the giraffe. Aside from accumulating a menagerie over nearly three decades, in recent years the Critter Run has been establishing a tradition of tight races. The close finishes started in the 2009 race with Andrew Norton edging out Charlie Johnson 17:13 to 17:18. In 2010 Tommy Heikkinen ran 17:14 to finish just ahead of Brandon Hough's 17:17. Challen Hyman's 2011 winning time of 18:00 just beat runner-up Chase Harris' 18:08.

Caleb CarmichaelPensacola's Caleb Carmichael, a University of West Florida cross-country coach, had witnessed two of those close finishes from behind, finishing 5th (18:50) in 2010 and third (18:20). In 2012 Carmichael was ready to be part of the story.

But in the Saturday evening race, Tallahassee triathlete Charlie Johnson, the 2009 runner-up, took the lead. Carmichael trailed Johnson until the final climb up Whately Drive toward the finish in Westgate Park, where Carmichael decided it was his last chance to make a move. He closed the gap. With less than 200 meters to go, Johnson and Carmichael were running shoulder to shoulder going up Whately. Then the coach pulled away. Carmichael turned into Westgate Park with the lead, then crossed the finish line with his own close victory, 16:56 to 17:03 over Johnson. David Seymour of Enterprise, Alabama trailed the two over the line in 18:16, and Tallahassee's Sean Hudson grabbed the top master spot, finishing fourth in 18:29.

2012 Critter Run 5K overall award winners200 meters out from the finish, Tallahassee's Sandy Holt was just a few steps ahead of Kim Likens, but Holt widened the gap before the end of the race, beating Likens 22:46 to 22:57. Tallahassee's Likens was the fastest master woman in the race, finishing ahead of Blakely master runner Debbie Wittmer. Wittmer was the third woman overall, placing 40th in 23:09.

338 athletes finished the race.
