Caleb Carmichael and Hannah Hosay come home to win the Tallahassee Turkey Trot

In the United States, Thanksgiving is a time for homecoming. If you don't believe that, just try to book an airline flight during the Thanksgiving weekend. There is an especially big Thanksgiving homecoming event for athletes in Tallahassee, Florida, and that's Gulf Winds Track Club's annual Tallahassee Turkey Trot Road Race. Caleb Carmichael was among the thousands in Southwood for the race on Thanksgiving morning, 23 November 2023. Carmichael lives in Pensacola where he coaches cross-country at the University of West Florida, but a couple of decades back he was a high school cross-country runner in Tallahassee. He returned to win the Turkey Trot 15K by over 200 meters, running 51:23. In the women's competition, Hannah Hosay made a trip back home from the University of Florida in Gainesville to score a Turkey Trot 15K women's title, placing ninth overall in 60:57.

The Turkey Trot 15K was the longest of three races that started from Esplanade Way in Southwood at 8:30 AM on Thanksgiving Day. Caleb Carmichael set the early pace for the 15K field, but during the second kilometer Trevor Touchton took over the lead. By the four kilometer mark, Touchton, an alum of Lincoln High and the United States Military Academy, had opened a gap of ten seconds.


But Carmichael came back. The coach overtook Touchton by the midway point of the race, and then pulled away during the second half, going on to win in 51:23. Touchton took second in 52:08. Tallahassee's Leonardo Canete was the first master runner in the race, coming in third overall in 55:39. Mason Romuald, a senior on the Lincoln High cross-country team, took fourth in 57:37.

On the women's side, Hannah Hosay never had any challengers during the 15K. By halfway the microbiology student was already 600 meters ahead, and that lead had grown to over 1200 meters by the time she crossed the finish line in a winning 60:57. Tallahassee's Melanie Leitman was the women's runner-up, placing 21st overall in 66:34. Kara Guinan, formerly a cross-country runner at Keene State University, was the third woman and 37th overall in 73:07. Laura Reina was the first woman master and fifth female finisher in the 15K, 51st overall in 76:46.

In the Turkey Trot 10K, the men's competition was dominated by high school cross-country runners. During the eighth kilometer of the race two sophomores shared the lead--Matthew Hauser of Lincoln and Josh Hicks of Chiles. Hauser pulled away over the final two kilometers to win in 35:33 while Hicks faded, finishing seventh in 38:46.

Another high school sophomore, Samuel Wood of Sharpsburg, Georgia's Trinity Christian Academy, took second in 37:07. Kyle Kraeft of Tallahassee was third in 37:16. Bryan Hendricks was the top master runner in the 10K, coming in eighth overall in 39:19.


Adriana Piekarewicz didn't need a late-race push to take the women's title in the 10K. Piekarewicz finished nearly 400 meters ahead of the next woman in the race, placing sixth overall in 38:15. It was her second Tallahassee Turkey Trot 10K title; she had also won in 2017, running 38:03.

Caroline Couch, a Maclay School sophomore, was second in the women's standings, placing eleventh overall in 40:04. Just six days before the Turkey Trot, Couch had finished second in the class 1A girls' race at Florida's High School Cross-Country State Championship Meet. Karina Montes of Miami, Florida was the third woman in the 10K, coming in fourteenth overall in 41:09. Carrie Murphy of Tallahassee was the first woman master and eighth female finisher, 29th overall in 44:03.

Where high school cross-country runners shone in the Turkey Trot 10K, collegiate harriers led the way in the 5K.

1500 meters into the race, Wyatt Townsend of William and Mary was setting the pace for the field, closely followed by Nathan Reffitt of the University of Tampa. A little bit farther back, Ben Kirbo was running in third, wearing Colorado State colors. Behind Kirbo was Andrew McGinnis, a second-year runner for the Samford University Bulldogs.


McGinnis overtook Kirbo, then Reffitt and Townsend. With a kilometer to go, the Samford Bulldog had a five-second lead. He widened that gap on the way to the finish line, which he reached in a winning 15:04. Townsend held off Reffitt for second, 15:17 to 15:18. Kirbo took fourth in 15:26. Hans Hassell was the first master runner in the short race and the 21st male finisher, 22nd overall in 18:53.

Erin Phelps, an alum of the Chiles High and Florida State University cross-country teams, was the first woman in the 5K, placing seventeenth overall in 18:31. Charlotte Sikes, a seventh-grader on the Swift Creek Middle School cross-country squad, placed runner-up in the women's standings, finishing 28th overall in 19:04. Suus Altorf of the Netherlands, a frosh harrier for Florida State, was third in the women's division and 29th overall in 19:11. Stephanie Liles-Weyant was the first woman master and the fifth female finisher in the 5K, 46th overall in 20:19.

Deison and Hosay make it Special

In Tallahassee, Florida's Phipps Park on Wednesday afternoon, 30 August 2017, Maclay sophomore Thomas Deison turned a 20:17 to win the boys' 5K at the Maclay Travel Soccer Cross-Country Special. Another Maclay sophomore, Hannah Hosay, went 23:20 to win the girls' 5K.

Wait. In the menagerie of cross-country meets, I've encountered invitationals, opens, and classics, but "Maclay Travel Soccer Cross-Country Special?" What sort of creature is that?


In order to accommodate multi-sport athletes on their team, some cross-country coaches allow athletes to miss practices or even races while those athletes are off swimming, playing volleyball, bowling, or playing 43-man squamish. It's an enlightened approach you'd never find in a high school band. While off at another sport's tournament, an athlete may not be able to run with the cross-country team at a mid-season invitational. There's the hope, though, that the athlete will be available to help the team when it counts--during championship series at the end of the season, district, region, and state. However, the Florida High School Athletic Association has a requirement that an athlete must race five times during the regular season in order to be eligible to compete in the championship series of meets. Miss enough races, and you won't have the minimum five to go to district.

Club soccer (aka "travel soccer") is especially greedy when it comes to weekends during cross-country season. Athletes who play on a travel soccer team find it nearly impossible to run cross-country on enough Saturdays to be eligible for district.


But there are other days of the week, such as Wednesday. In order to give area athletes a chance to log a race toward their required five, Maclay School cross-country coach Gary Droze slated the Maclay Travel Soccer Cross-Country Special on a Wednesday, locating the course in Phipps Park--conveniently near the Meadows Soccer Complex. Not that it was an entirely new course.

"This is a lot like the course we used for the 'Ski Lift Invitational,'" noted Lincoln High cross-country coach Chris Sumner.


So the genesis of the Travel Soccer Cross-Country Special is a sort of legalism, which is probably why it sounds more like a tax shelter than an athletic event. But even something forced into existence by the rules can have merit. Monty Python's Contractual Obligation Album, was a comedy record the group had to produce because of, well, a contractual obligation to Charisma Records. Neverthless, the album actually achieved the highest rating on the charts of any that the Pythons ever released.

Not that I'm saying that the Maclay Travel Soccer Cross-Country Special was Tallahassee's best cross-country meet.


Behind Deison, the winner of the boys' 5K, Lincoln frosh Weston Blake was second in 21:13. Maclay junior Daniel Sweeney took third in 22:40. Neither Maclay nor Lincoln entered a full boys' team in the meet, though. Instead, it was Jefferson County who took the team title, scoring 25 points behind the fifth-place, 23:12 finish of sophomore Ja'Michael Steen. Munroe Day School was second in the team standings with 32 points, led by sophomore Levi Allen (7th, 25:13).

On the girls' side, Maclay sophomore Avery Smith finished runner-up behind Hannah Hosay, clocking 23:31. Lincoln sophomore Chase Merrick was third in 23:48. Only Maclay fielded a full girls' team, so the Lady Marauders won the meet with a perfect 15 points.

Hosay and Jackson lead a Holy Comforter sweep of the Crusader Classic

In 2014 the Holy Comforter Crusaders scored a sweep at the Crusader Cross Country Classic. On Tuesday afternoon, 15 September 2015, they did it again. Crusader eighth-grader Hannah Hosay won the middle school girls' 3K in 12:20, while the team put up a perfect 15 points to take the title. The Holy Comforter boys' team scored a near-perfect 17 points in their own 3K race, led by the 11:00 victory of eighth-grader Trey Jackson.


Competition started at 4:00 PM in Tallahassee, Florida, at Holy Comforter Episcopal School on Lawson's Course. By the half kilometer mark Holy Comforter's Hannah Hosay and Avery Smith were holding the first two places, while Trinity Catholic seventh-grader Mattie Ziegler ran in third. At the one kilometer mark, though, Crusader runners had moved up to occupy the first five places. That's how the race finished, with Holy Comforter eighth-graders Hannah Hosay (1st, 12:20), Avery Smith (2nd, 12:46), Elizabeth Calabro (3rd, 13:00), and Lauren Dessi (4th, 13:23) took the first four places, while Crusader sixth-grader Kate Smith finished fifth in 13:34. Maclay seventh-grader Madison Perkins placed sixth in 13:58, the first runner to break the Holy Comforter monopoly on the top spots. But the Crusaders had already scored the lowest possible total of 15 points, winning the meet. Maclay was second with 48 points. Trinity Catholic, led by the 15:20 14th place finish of seventh-grader Lilly Williams, was third with 89 points.

The boys 3K followed the girls' race. Holy Comforter eighth-grader Trey Jackson took the lead in the first hundred meters going around the first turn on the course. For the first kilometer Jackson continued to set the pace, closely followed by Holy Comforter eighth-graders Jackson Roberts and Joseph Ashebo. Maclay eighth-grader Thomas Deison trailed in fourth. Jackson spent the rest of the race opening a gap on the field while Roberts and Ashebo fought for second. Jackson went on to win the race in 11:00. Roberts passed Ashebo for the last time with about a kilometer to go, then motored home to take second in 11:14. Ashebo was third in 11:26, and Maclay's Deison fourth in 11:41.


Sixth-grader Leo Kelly (5th, 11:48) and eighth-grader Brecht Heuchan (6th, 12:02) took the next two places for Holy Comforter, giving the Crusaders a 17-point win. Maclay placed second with 48 points. Led by eighth-grader Alex Bouchard (18th, 13:40), Trinity Catholic was third in the team standings with 88 points.


Later in the same week as the Crusader Classic, Holy Comforter travels to Pebble Hill Plantation near Thomasville, Georgia, for the Quail Trail Invitational. The Crusaders will also be hosting another home meet, the Tallahassee Middle School Open on Thursday, 15 October 2015. And after that?


"We're going to State!" said Holy Comforter's Joseph Ashebo.
