Kyle Kraeft and Monica Judd romp in the Swamp

Phipps Park lies on the north edge of Tallahassee, Florida. The park is host to hikes and cross-country meets, but is probably best know as the site of the Red Hills Horse Trials. This is a bit unfair, because the horses and their riders only see a small corner of the hundreds of acres and miles of trail in Phipps. Athletes in Gulf Winds Track Club's Swamp Forest Trail Races see a lot more of the park, touring a loop nearly seven miles long. At the seventh annual Swamp Forest Trail Run, entries in the Quarter-Marathon got to see that loop once. Those in the Half-Marathon race toured it twice. Athletes in the Twenty-Mile Challenge made three circuits of the loop. Kyle Kraeft of Tallahassee was the first to finish the three laps on Saturday morning, 4 January 2020, winning the race in 3:02:27. Tallahassee master runner Monica Judd was the first woman in the Twenty Mile, placing fifth overall in 3:02:27.

Geb Kiros, a biostatistics professor at Florida A & M University, was the top master runner in the Twenty Mile, coming in second overall in 3:05:41. Gabe Peters of Tallahassee took third in 3:08:42.

Newton, Georgia athlete Christine Sandbach placed runner-up to Judd in the women's division, finishing seventh overall in 3:34:26. Allison Adamov of Niceville, Florida was the third female finisher and eighth overall in 3:37:49.

The Twenty-Mile Challenge was the longest race at the 2020 edition of the Swamp Forest Trail Races, which had included a Marathon from 2014 to 2019 and even a 50-kilometer race in 2019. The marathon had never attracted more than twenty-five finishers though, and during the first six years of the race more than a few athletes had dropped out after the first three laps of a longer race. Race director Bobby York adjusted the program in 2020, making the three-lapper an event, the Twenty-Mile Challenge. The "shorter" race proved a hit, attracting 36 finishers.

Troy Dunkley and Jillian Heddaeus rise to the Ten-Mile Challenge

Back in 2010, Reid Vannoy designed a five-mile loop around Ox Bottom Manor, north of Tallahassee, for Gulf Winds Track Club's Ten-Mile Challenge. If you run the loop twice, you've gone ten miles. Troy Dunkley ran two loops in 55:12 on Saturday morning, 7 December 2019, winning the 44th annual Ten-Mile Challenge. Jillian Heddaeus was the first woman in the race, placing twelfth overall in 76:54.

Similar to the 2018 Challenge, it was cool and cloudy when the 2019 race started from Hawks Rise Elementary School at 8:00 AM. Unlike 2018, there was no rain. The streets were dry when Troy Dunkley and Trevor Sununu led the field away from the school, heading east on Meadow Ridge Drive. The course was hilly, and Dunkley opened a gap on Sununu while climbing a hill during the third mile. Sununu came back, though.

"I caught up to him on that long downhill around the fourth mile," said Sununu. "But after that he got away again on the uphill."

Trevor Sununu

That was the race. Dunkley spent the second half of the run widening his lead. He crossed the finish line back at the school first in 55:12. Sununu was second in 56:16. Chris O'Kelley, runner-up in the 2018 Challenge, placed third in 61:51. Another veteran of the 2018 race, Myles Gibson, was the top master runner in the Challenge, placing fifth overall in 65:07. Gibson noted that he had run better than half a minute faster than he had the previous year.

"Whenever I can do that, I'm happy," said Gibson.

Just a mile into the Ten-Mile Challenge, Jillian Heddaeus was well ahead of the rest of the women's field. Halfway through the race, she was nearly a quarter mile ahead of the next woman. During the second half, though, Melanie Leitman erased that lead. During the final mile, Heddaeus and Leitman were just a few seconds apart. Heddaeus held on to those few seconds, though, holding off Leitman's charge to take the women's title in 76:54. Leitman was a close runner-up in 76:59, placing thirteenth overall. Ruffian Tyner was the first woman master and third female finisher, fifteenth overall in 80:04.

For those eschewing the Challenge of a ten-mile run there was a five-mile race, one time around the Ox Bottom Manor loop. Gary Droze won the shorter race for the second year in a row; the master runner and Tallahassee Community College cross-country coach covered the course in 29:50. Ryan Truchelut was second in 30:40.

Ann Centner was the first woman in the race and third overall in 30:40. Centner was the overall leader in the five mile nearly from the start. Just over a hundred yards from the finish, on pace to break 29:00, she missed the turn into the school. Centner eventually realized that she was headed around the loop a second time and turned back, but the extra running cost her almost two minutes. In spite of the detour, Centner's time was still a women's event record, bettering the 30:46 run by Amy Paine in 2006.

Behind Centner, master runner Mike Martinez was the third male finisher and fourth overall in 31:06.

Katie Sherron, a five-time women's champ of the Ten-Mile Challenge, opted for the shorter race in 2019. Sherron was the women's runner-up and ninth overall in 34:45. Alyssa Moore placed third in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 34:48. Tanya Evers was the first woman master and fifth female finisher in the five mile, twentieth overall in 37:50.

59 athletes finished the 2019 Ten-Mile Challenge, and another 120 completed the five-mile run. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed both races.

Gary Droze and Morgan Wilson soar at the Bluebird 5K

There was no Bluebird Run For Brookie B in 2016. The race had been scheduled for Labor Day, 5 September 2016, and Tallahassee was preoccupied that day with cleaning up after Hurricane Hermine.

Gary Droze
Gary Droze

The fourth annual Bluebird Run was slated for Monday morning, 2 September 2019. Hurricane Dorian dominated the news, but that monster cyclone was well over 400 miles from Tallahassee--even if the Weather Channel wanted you to believe that the storm was in your bathroom, using your toothbrush and leaving the toilet seat up. So with the Capital City well outside Dorian’s forecast cone, the Bluebird 5K went ahead as planned at the Alford Greenway. Tallahassee Community College cross-country coach Gary Droze won the 3.1-mile race, running 19:13. Community Christian School sophomore Morgan Wilson took first in the women's standings, placing 32nd overall in 22:19.

Most of the Tallahassee area’s high school cross-country runners had raced two days earlier at Apalachee Regional Park in the third annual Big Bend Invitational, but many were at the Bluebird Run for a second helping of racing. Two of them, Aucilla Christian athletes Will Sullivan and Wyatt Stafford, were leading at the 400-meter mark, just after the 8:30 AM start of the race. They wouldn’t remain in the lead--Sullivan ended the race fourth in 19:29 while Stafford was eleventh in 20:37. Coach Droze, a master runner with more than four decades of competitive experience, was well aware that cross-country races aren’t won in the first 400 meters. The coach wasn’t even in the top ten that early in the Bluebird Run.

Keelan Tidwell

After four kilometers Sullivan was still leading, but he was being shadowed by Droze and two Community Christian School athletes, Nick Ciarlariello and Keelan Tidwell. All three eventually overtook Sullivan, but Droze was the first, going on to win in 19:13. Tidwell edged his teammate Ciarlariello for the runner-up position, 19:22 to 19:23.

No one would argue that the Bluebird Run course was particularly fast or easy. The Alford Greenway is hilly. The grass on the course had been mowed, but that only meant that it was ankle deep instead of shin deep. The grass was also soaking wet on the morning of the race. But the Greenway had its fans, including women’s champ Morgan Wilson.

Morgan Wilson
Morgan Wilson

“I really like this course!” said Wilson. “It wasn’t too hilly, and there were nice downhills after each uphill.”

Wilson was among the athletes who had run at the Big Bend Invitational two days before the Bluebird Run. How did the Alford Greenway compare to the well-groomed Apalachee Regional Park Cross-Country Course?

“I ran two second faster here than I did at Apalachee Regional Park,” said Wilson. That would be her fastest time yet in two years of cross-country racing.

Wilson first led the women’s field in the earliest stages of the Bluebird Run. With a kilometer to go, she was just a few steps ahead of master runner Lourena Maxwell. Wilson expanded that lead on the way to the finish line, taking the women’s title in 22:19. Maxwell was the second woman and 35th overall in 22:32. Dr. Katie Sherron, the first woman at the 2017 Bluebird Run, was the third woman in 2019, placing 41st overall in 23:05.

276 timed athletes finished the 2019 Bluebird 5K, while another 23 completed a one-mile fun run. Proceeds of the Bluebird Run go to fund the programs of the local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, NAMI Tallahassee. Gulf Winds Track Club chip timed the races.

Sizzler 5K wins are a day at the beach for Tallahassee couple Gary Droze and Vicky Droze

By 7:00 PM, most people are wrapping up their day at the beach. They're headed home, or getting dinner, or taking one last walk along the surf. But at 7:00 PM on Saturday, 3 August 2019, the biggest part of the day at the beach was just getting under way for nearly a hundred athletes on Saint George Island, Florida. They were running the 22nd annual Sizzler 5K, 3.1 miles on the barrier island bordering Apalachicola Bay. Master runner Gary Droze went 18:19 to win the race, while Vicky Droze was the first woman in the race, tenth overall in 22:39.

It wasn't Gary Droze's first time running the Sizzler, The Tallahassee Community College cross-country coach had won the race in both 1998 and 2000. Chance Logan, winner of the 2018 Sizzler, took the runner-up spot with a 19:11. Donalsonville, Georgia master runner Myles Gibson placed third in 19:27.

On the women's side, master runner Vicky Droze found herself in a tight race for the top spot. Her husband, Gary, had won the men's competition by more than 200 meters, but Vicky Droze was only a few steps ahead of Kaley Ford in the fight for the women's title. Nevertheless, Droze prevailed, running 22:39 to Ford's 22:42. Tallahassee master runner Paula O'Neill was third in the women's standings, coming in seventeenth overall in 24:44.

96 athletes finished the 2019 Sizzler 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee, Florida chip-timed the race. The Sizzler was a fundraiser for the Elder Care Community Council of Franklin County.

Charlie Kline and Amanda Sava finish a dozen kilometers in a Flash

On the outskirts of Saint Marks, Florida less than fifteen seconds separated four runners racing south on the Saint Marks Trail. It was Saturday morning, 16 February 2019, and Charlie Johnson, Charlie Kline, Michael Rhodes, and Chris O'Kelley were leading Gulf Winds Track Club's 31st annual Flash 12K, just 2500 meters from the finish line at Fort San Marcos de Apalachee State Park. Minutes later it was Charlie Kline who crossed that finish line first, passing Charlie Johnson late in the race to win the 12K in 43:04. Amanda Sava was the first woman, placing twelfth overall in 52:08.

The race also started from the park, with the runners heading six kilometers north on the Saint Marks Rail Trail before turning around to retrace their route for the second half of the race. Three minutes after the 8:30 AM command to start, Michael Rhodes was leading the 12K field. The Perry, Florida master runner had also led the Flash in 2018. That year he had eventually been overtaken by Chris O'Kelley, who went on to win in 44:20 while Rhodes took second in 45:39. This year O'Kelley was in a group of three runners chasing Rhodes, including Charlie Johnson and Charlie Kline. At two kilometers Rhodes was 80 meters ahead, but the pursuit was closing.

"They passed me right at the water table at the turnaround," said Rhodes.

Johnson led on the return trip, followed by Kline and O'Kelley, then Rhodes. Defending champ O'Kelley fell back, and he and Rhodes began racing for third place. But Kline kept in contact with Johnson.

"Charlie had the lead coming off the bike path," said Kline. "He was still five seconds up on me and I didn't think I could close. But he started waving to me and saying, 'Come on, Charlie!' I passed him with 600 meters to go. I thought he would come back, but he didn't."

No, he didn't. Kline made it back to the Fort first in 43:04, with Johnson second in 43:11. O'Kelley passed Rhodes on the final stretch to take third in 43:23. Close behind in 43:27, Rhodes was the first master runner in the race and fourth overall.

Twelve kilometers is an unusual distance in the world of road racing, which is dominated by five kilometer races with a sprinkling of ten kilometer events, half marathons, and full marathons. 12K was not a familiar distance for Amanda Sava.

"I hadn't run 12K before," said Sava. "But I ran several 6K races back in college. I ran for FIT in Melbourne."

Amanda Sava
Amanda Sava

Six kilometers is the championship distance for women's cross-country in the NCAA, so she had raced 6K more than once while competing for the Florida Tech Panthers cross-country team. Now studying for a master's degree in meteorology at Florida State, Sava was doubling that distance at the Flash 12K. She trailed Brittney Barnes in the early going, but by the two-kilometer mark Sava was setting the pace for the women's field.

"The course was flat and fast and the weather was great," said Sava. "It was hard after the turnaround, though. There wasn't anyone to run with."

The long, straight stretches of the Saint Marks Trail may not be physically difficult, but they are psychologically taxing. Sava toughed it out, though, finishing with a 300 meter lead over the next woman in the race in a winning 52:08. About two miles from the finish, Stephanie Liles-Weyant overtook Barnes. Liles-Weyant, the first woman in the 2008 Flash 12K, went on to finish runner-up in the women's standings and fifteenth overall in 53:23. Running 54:31, Barnes was the third woman and 22nd overall.

Since 2009, the Flash has included a 6K race, run concurrently with the 12K. Jana Stolting, at the time a Maclay School cross-country runner, won that inaugural 6K, running 21:36. No one had run a faster Flash 6K since.

Not until 2019, anyway. Master runner Gary Droze, who had been Stolting's coach at Maclay, hammered the 2019 Flash 6K, leading from start to finish and winning by more than 900 meters in new event record of 21:04. Master runner Michael Martinez, himself the 2013 winner of the Flash 6K, took second in 24:56. Joshua Liles placed third in 25:34.

Eleven-year-old Madison Sims, a sixth-grader on the Fort Braden Middle School cross-country team, took first in the women's standings, placing seventh overall in 28:51. Georgina Hernandez was the women's runner-up and eighth overall in 29:04. Paula O'Neill was the first woman master and third female finisher, eleventh overall in 30:56.
