Caden Vandermeulen and Vicky Droze brought winning ways to the Nene Fest Two-Way 5K

Nene Fest 5K logoSaturday, 26 April 2025, was the morning of Tallahassee, Florida's tenth annual Nene Fest 5K. It was also the fourth Nene Fest to feature the gimmick where athletes had their choice of running the course either clockwise or counterclockwise. Caden Vandermeulen chose to follow the course clockwise around the Indianhead Acres neighborhood. Vandermeulen also chose to run the course quickly--faster than anyone else as it turned out, as he won the race in 18:10. For the third year in a row master runner Vicky Droze ran the course counterclockwise and for the second year in a row she was the first woman in the race. This time around she was seventh overall in 22:13.


Ryan Kunz had finished second in the 2024 Nene Fest, choosing to navigate the course in a counterclockwise direction. For 2025 Kunz opted to go clockwise and finished runner-up again, but this time he was the first master runner. His time was 18:33. Nathan Kollett, another runner in the clockwise crowd, took third in 19:04.


Master runner Sarah Lester followed Vicky Droze's lead in taking on the course counterclockwise. Lester finished second in the women's division, coming in thirteenth overall in 23:28. Master runner Patch Nugent also ran counterclockwise; at 25:05 she was the third woman and sixteenth overall.


65 athletes finished the 2025 Nene Fest 5K.

Sizzler 5K wins are a day at the beach for Tallahassee couple Gary Droze and Vicky Droze

By 7:00 PM, most people are wrapping up their day at the beach. They're headed home, or getting dinner, or taking one last walk along the surf. But at 7:00 PM on Saturday, 3 August 2019, the biggest part of the day at the beach was just getting under way for nearly a hundred athletes on Saint George Island, Florida. They were running the 22nd annual Sizzler 5K, 3.1 miles on the barrier island bordering Apalachicola Bay. Master runner Gary Droze went 18:19 to win the race, while Vicky Droze was the first woman in the race, tenth overall in 22:39.


It wasn't Gary Droze's first time running the Sizzler, The Tallahassee Community College cross-country coach had won the race in both 1998 and 2000. Chance Logan, winner of the 2018 Sizzler, took the runner-up spot with a 19:11. Donalsonville, Georgia master runner Myles Gibson placed third in 19:27.


On the women's side, master runner Vicky Droze found herself in a tight race for the top spot. Her husband, Gary, had won the men's competition by more than 200 meters, but Vicky Droze was only a few steps ahead of Kaley Ford in the fight for the women's title. Nevertheless, Droze prevailed, running 22:39 to Ford's 22:42. Tallahassee master runner Paula O'Neill was third in the women's standings, coming in seventeenth overall in 24:44.


96 athletes finished the 2019 Sizzler 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee, Florida chip-timed the race. The Sizzler was a fundraiser for the Elder Care Community Council of Franklin County.

Winning is a piece of cake for Kurt Dietrich and Vicky Droze at the Mother's Day 5K

In 2017, Kurt Dietrich won the sixteenth annual Tails & Trails 5K, and seven days later won the Marzuq Shrine Temple's Mother's Day 5K. In 2018 Dietrich was a repeat winner at the Tails & Trails 5K on May 5, then returned to Maclay Gardens on May 12 for a title defense at the Mother’s Day 5K. He won again, going 18:40. In the women's competition Vicky Droze took first, placing eighth overall in 23:03 and outrunning last year's winner Laura Reina. 92 athletes finished the race.

The Marzuq Shrine Temple first held their Mother's Day 5K in 2004. Every year since then you could depend on finding that race on the north side of Tallahassee in Maclay Gardens State Park on the Saturday morning before Mother's Day. It became a tradition. The awards were another tradition; cakes for the winners. The cakes disappeared in 2017, replaced with a more usual sort of prize. After a popular outcry, baked goods were back in 2018.


“Let us know what we can improve. We want to make this the best race possible,” the race director urged repeatedly. The return of the cakes confirms that the Shriners really do listen to the runners.

Cakes were back, and so were Kurt Dietrich and Laura Reina when the race started from the Lake Hall Recreation Area at 8:30 AM. Dietrich was leading right after leaving the starting line, dashing up the hill from the lake. Filippo Reina, a Deerlake Middle School eighth-grader, was right behind him. Paul Guyas, runner-up in the race in 2017, moved into third during the first half mile. By the last mile Guyas had passed Reina and was running in second. In the 2017 race, Guyas had been within striking distance of Dietrich with a mile to go. This time around, Dietrich was too far ahead to challenge.


“I expected Paul to be closer than he was,” said Dietrich.

Instead, Dietrich crossed the finish line with a lead of more than 200 meters, winning the race in 18:40. Guyas was the first master runner and overall runner-up in 19:33. Master runners Chuck Lang and Bill McNulty took the next two places, running 20:06 and 20:11. Filippo Reina was fifth in 20:19.


“It was kind of a disappointing time this week,” said Dietrich. “I’ve been tired the last few weeks so I knew it wouldn’t be as fast as last year.”


Laura Reina led the women’s field at the mile mark, with master runner Vicky Droze and Jasmin McClellan seven seconds behind. During the second mile, though, Droze left McClellan behind and caught Reina. After that it was Droze’s race. Back at Lake Hall she was the first woman across the finish line, running 23:03. Laura Reina was the women’s runner-up, ninth overall in 23:31. Jasmin McClellan held off Paula O'Neill for the third woman's spot, 24:05 to 24:08. McClellan and O'Neill were eleventh and twelfth overall.

After getting his second win in two consecutive Saturdays at the 2017 Mother’s Day 5K, Dietrich had followed that up with a third winning weekend in a row at the Big Bend Filipino-American Association 5K. Dietrich plans to be in Cascades Park on May 19, trying for another win in the third annual BBFAA 5K. Other runners in the area are heading south that day for the twelfth annual Wakulla Springs 5K, or west to Blountstown, Florida for the seventh annual Catfish Crawl 5K. It may be summer weather now, but that just means that summer racing has started.

Droze and Droze Dash with Dragons

In 2014 the Sundberg Memorial 5K quietly disappeared from the Tallahassee, Florida, running schedule after being an annual fixture for 15 years, 1999-2013. Just because the Sundberg was gone from Maclay Gardens State Park, though, didn't mean that there were no longer 5K road races in the park. There was still the Fallen Heroes 5K in September, the Marzuq Mother's Day 5K in May, and the Dragon Dash 5K in January. And on Saturday morning, 17 January 2015, the Dragon Dash 5K was back in Maclay Gardens for a third annual running.


Maclay School cross-country coach Gary Droze has won more than a few races in Maclay Gardens over the years. The Tallahassee master runner added another victory at the 2015 Dragon Dash 5K, posting a 17:43 while leaving the rest of a field of 94 athletes far behind. Fellow master runner Michael Martinez finished second in a distant 18:48.


Vicky Droze won the women's title, placing third overall in 21:42. Laura Reina was the women's runner-up and top woman master, coming in fifth overall in 23:33.


The Dragon Dash 5K is hosted annually by the School of Arts and Sciences.

Linton and Adriani make it two at the Ten

Stanley Linton55:30 wasn't the fastest time for ten miles ever run in Tallahassee. 55:30 wasn't even the fastest time ever run at Gulf Winds Track Club's Ten-Mile Challenge. But 55:30 was the fastest ten miles run on the Oxbottom Manor course laid out by the Reid Vannoy in 2010. And 55:30 was fast enough for Stanley Linton to win his second straight Ten-Mile Challenge title at the 26th annual edition of the race on Saturday morning, 7 December 2013. It was apparently a good morning for repeat wins, because 2012 women's champion Micah Adriani also successfully defended her title, finishing 26th overall in 1:13:42.


Dan NixThe morning of the race was foggy, humid, and warm--weather that might have been pleasant in July, but this was December. Like the previous year's race, Vince Molosky, the race champ in 2009 and 2010, started out near the front with Stanley Linton. This time around, though, Linton dropped Molosky during the first mile. After two miles Linton was running alone, 200 yards out in front. Dan Nix had passed Molosky to take over second place. At the halfway point Linton was out in front by a quarter mile and still adding to his lead. Nix held second, but Nate Kaiser had overtaken Molosky to move into third. In fifth, Gary Droze was losing ground to Kaiser, but gaining on Molosky.

The course was twice around a five-mile loop, and the second lap was a lonely one for Linton. The Florida State University sophomore's lead grew to nearly half a mile before he finished with a win in 55:30. Dan Nix held on to second place, running 58:16. Nate Kaiser took third in 58:50. Four-time Ten-Mile Challenge champ Gary Droze was the first master runner, passing Vince Molosky during the second half to take fourth with a 59:15. Molosky finished fifth in 60:51.


Micah AdrianiIn the women's competition, Micah Adriani, Jillian Heddaeus, and Mary Anne Grayson reached the mile mark within a few seconds of each other. During the next mile, though, Adriani opened a gap on Heddaeus, and Grayson had fallen way back. It was Adriani's race after that, but Grayson would come back to overtake Heddaeus. So would Urska Dobersek and 2011 women's champion Katie Sherron. Adriani finished the race with the women's title and a 300-meter lead in 73:42. Thomasville's Mary Anne Grayson was the women's runner-up, coming in 31st overall in 1:15:17. Urska Dobersek closed to finish third in the women's standings, 32nd overall in 1:15:31. Katie Sherron was fourth in the women's standings, 33rd overall in 76:35. Jillian Heddaeus, after challenging for the lead early, was fifth for the women, 34th overall in 1:16:45.

Tony GuillenOn the Ten-Mile Challenge course there's a hill about a mile from the end of the five-mile loop that had more than a few runners questioning their desire to go around a second time. Fortunately for those athletes and for anyone else who didn't want to go ten miles that morning, there was a five-mile option. After finishing runner-up in the 2012 Five-Mile Road Race, Tallahassee master runner Tony Guillen won the 2013 race, clocking 30:51. Bainbridge High School sophomore Perry Waddell was second in 33:32. His father, Bainbridge master runner Greg Waddell, was third in 33:38. Vicky Droze was the first woman across the finish line, fifth overall in 35:38. Emily Ness of Capital City Runner's was the second woman in the five-mile race, seventh overall in 37:58. Third in the women's standings was the first woman master runner, Paul O'Neill, ninth overall in 38:18.

Hempel and Droze put on a show at Break-A-Leg 5K

On Saturday morning, 16 February 2013, less than two weeks after running the Tallahassee Half Marathon, Tallahassee master runner Karl Hempel  won the inaugural Break-A-Leg 5K, a production of the Young Actors Theatre. Hempel ran 19:36 for the 3.1-mile race through the Midtown section of Tallahassee, finishing a little over 100 meters ahead of runner-up Jon Morgan. Morgan's time was 19:59, just ahead of the 20:06 put up by third-place runner Carter Hay. Paul Pagano took fourth in 20:27, with Cris Wilhoit fifth in 20:58 and schoolboy William Wilkerson sixth in 21:22.


Right behind Wilkerson, Tallahassee's Vicky Droze was the first female finisher, placing seventh overall in 21:22. Over half a kilometer behind Droze, Emily Parsons was the second woman across the finish line, running 24:07. Holly Newell ran 24:24 to take the third women's spot, and at 25:23 Joy Van Oss was the fourth female finisher. Michelle Harrison edged out Nancy Proctor for top master woman honors, 26:07 to 26:12.


Just over 200 athletes finished the race, a fundraiser for Tallahassee's Young Actors Theatre.

Lagat leads the 2012 Run With The Moose 5K

Carly Thomas and Violah LagatWomen runners have had much to say in the three-year history of the Run With The Moose 5K in Quincy, Florida. Sheryl Rosen was the overall winner of the first Run With The Moose, running 20:52 in 2010. Gary Droze evened the score for the men in 2011 with a 17:57 win. But in this year's race on Saturday morning, 28 July 2012, the women regained the lead in wins, taking the top spot and three of the top four places.


Duane EvansThe race started just after 8:15 AM, and the athletes headed north on Shelfer Street. Just over half a kilometer into the race the runners made a turn onto King Street. Crawfordville master runner Duane Evans was first to that corner, followed by Violah Lagat and Carly Thomas. It was just weeks away from Lagat's second and Thomas's first cross-country season competing for Seminoles Florida State University. On the way to the two-kilometer mark, the runners negotiated the worst of the King Street hills. Evans was still leading, but Lagat and Thomas were closing. The two Seminoles overtook Evans, and then Lagat ran away from everyone. Lagat finished the race with a 500 meter lead, running a new women's record of 18:45 for the hilly Quincy 5K. Thomas finished second overall with a time of 20:50. Evans placed third in 21:16, the first male and the fastest master in the race. Fourth overall at 22:04, Katelyn Kelly was the third female finisher. Sandra Canada was the fourth woman the the first female master; she placed ninth overall in 26:11.

Another constant in the history of the race is the carping about the hills. The hills aren't going away, though, nor are the hosts from the Moose Lodge about to air condition the course. But the runners do get an accurate 5K, a tour of some beautiful Quincy neighborhoods, traffic control from local law enforcement, and an event that benefits Special Olympics. Surely that's worth enduring a few hills.
