Leonardo Canete, Megan Noonan were winners in the Trail Series finale at Maclay Gardens

In baseball, "Wait till next year!" was the unofficial slogan of the Brooklyn Dodgers. It still is for the Chicago Cubs. Really, for any fan at the end of the season, it's a mantra of hope.


In the world of trail running, it could also have been on the lips of afficianados of Gulf Winds Track Club's Summer Trail Series after Saturday morning, 24 August 2024. That was the morning of the fourth and final race of the year on Tallahassee, Florida's Summer Trail circuit, the Maclay Gardens 9K. Leonardo Canete took first in the race on the Lake Overstreet trails, winning by 400 meters in 37:31. Master runner Megan Noonan was the women's champ, placing seventh overall in 42:12.

Leonardo Canete had company on the starting line, but none after that. Taking the lead almost immediately, he was soon out of sight of the rest of the field. He finished his lonely tour of the Overstreet trails in 37:31, almost two minutes before the next runner crossed the line. It was Canete's third win of the 2024 Series, and his eleventh Series win since 2021, his first year on the circuit. Only Zach DeVeau, with six victories, had even half as many first-place showings in the Summer Trail Series.

Kyle Kraeft placed runner-up to Canete in 39:12. Master runner Michael Tercyak took third, running 39:38.


2024 was the eleventh year of the trail series, and the sixth time that a Series race had been on the Overstreet trails. Series director Bobby York measured the course each time, coming up with six different figures. It's safe to say that the race is in the neighborhood of nine kilometers, as long as you understand that it's a largish neighborhood.

Megan Noonan finished those nine kilometers before any other woman in the field had finished the first eight. Her 42:12 earned Noonan a third win in three appearances during the 2024 Series


Michelle Rind took the second spot in the women's standings, placing sixteenth overall in 47:37. Averi Lewis was the third woman and nineteenth overall in 48:43. Lewis had been the top woman in the third Summer Trail Series race of 2024, the Swamp Forest Trail 7K.

With Gulf Winds Track Club's 2024 Summer Trail Series over, what would Tallahassee's trail runners do while waiting for next year? Race director Bobby York had an answer.


"I hope to see everyone at the Swamp Forest Trail Marathon on January 4," said York.


99 athletes finished the 2024 Maclay Gardens 9K Trail Race. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the event.

Leonardo Canete and Andi Vilardo each get a third Trail Series win at Maclay Gardens

If you were on the north side of Tallahassee, Florida in Maclay Gardens State Park on Saturday morning, 16 July 2022, you could have heard race director Bobby York giving starting instructions. You would have had to be on the power line easement near the Overstreet Tract trail head, because that was the race began--the Maclay Gardens 9K, the third event in Gulf Winds Track Club's Summer Trail Series. You might have been distracted from York's address by an athlete sprinting toward the runners crouching for the start. Leonardo Canete, a Tallahassee master runner, was trying to get to the line on time.

He didn't make it.


In spite of his late start, Canete went on to win the race, running 38:28. Thirteen-year-old Andi Vilardo, who started the race in a more timely fashion, took first in the women's division, placing 22nd overall in 52:14.

Canete didn't take long to make up the deficit from his tardy start. By the water table midway through the race he was almost 400 meters ahead of the field. He had expanded that lead to 600 meters when he crossed the finish line in a winning 38:28, over a minute faster than his time in the 2021 race. It was Canete's twelfth win of 2022 and his third win in a GWTC Trail Series race.


Kyle Kraeft was runner-up in the race, his tenth top-ten finish in a Summer Trail circuit event. Enijah Thomas held off Levon Hoomes for third, 42:14 to 42:16. Thomas was just overa a month away from starting his junior-year cross-country season at Rickards High.

Likewise, women's champ Andi Vilardo was just over a month away from her eighth-grade cross-country season with the Montford Middle School Mustangs. Vilardo led the women's field at Maclay Gardens from wire to wire, but late in the race master runner Mary Fran Rowe was closing the gap. The Montford harrier made it to the finish line just ahead of Rowe, 52:14 to 52:16. It was a close finish, but Vilardo was still three-for-three in the 2022 Trail Series.


Kendall Meikenhous took third in the women's standings at Maclay Gardens, placing 25th overall in 52:44. Meikenhous had finished runner-up to Vilardo in the second race of the 2022 Series, the Red Bug Trail 7K.

Jonathan Stern and Clifton Lewis pluck wins at Maclay Gardens

On Saturday morning, 24 July 2021, Jonathan Stern was in a hurry. He was in a hurry to get into the lead of the Maclay Gardens Trail Race. He was in a hurry to finish the nine-kilometer course through the Overstreet Tract of Maclay Gardens State Park, north of Tallahassee, Florida. But when he had finished, Stern had won the third race in Gulf Winds Track Club's Summer Trail Race Series, running 37:48. Thirteen-year-old Clifton Lewis was first in the women's division, placing eighth overall in 44:06.

It had been a dry year in Tallahassee. On the morning of the race, there was no water at all in the creek that carried overflow from Lake Overstreet. Nevertheless, there had been enough recent rain that the air was heavy with humidity, typical of July in Florida's Big Bend. The grass was dew-covered, and the ground itself was moist. Those were the conditions when the race got started, just a few minutes after 8:00 AM.


And just a few seconds after that start, Jonathan Stern was setting the pace for the field. A former cross-country and track athlete at Lake Forest College, Stern was closely followed by master runner Leonardo Canete. Two weeks earlier Canete had won the second event of this years Gulf Winds Trail Series, the Swamp Forest Trail Race. But the Maclay Gardens Race belonged to Stern. Stern continued to lead and took first in 37:48, finishing well over 200 meters ahead of the next runner. Tristan Lanasa ran 38:58 for second, his best placing yet in this year's Trail Series. Michael Nesius was third in 39:22. Canete was the first master runner in the race, coming in fourth overall in 39:34.

The Maclay Gardens Trail Race was Stern's debut on the Summer Trail Race circuit as well as his first Trail Series win. The first three Trail Series events in 2021 had three different male winners--Daniel Wurgler in the Tom Brown Park Trail Race, Leonardo Canete in the Swamp Forest Trail Race, and now Stern in the Maclay Gardens Trail Race. The women, on the other hand, had a repeat winner in Clifton Lewis. Lewis got her first win of the 2021 circuit at the Tom Brown Trail Race, then added a second victory at the Maclay Gardens Trail Race with a winning 44:06.


Amelia Bryant was second in the women's standings, finishing ninth overall in 44:55. Bryant had been the first woman in the Swamp Forest Trail Race. Hannah Hosay, an alum of the Maclay School cross-country team, was the third woman and tenth overall in 45:06. Ruffian Tyner was the first woman master and seventh female finisher, 29th overall in 53:19.

Mother and father Katie Sherron and Zach DeVeau win at the Mother's Day 5K

Starting in 2004, each year on the Saturday before Mother's Day you could spot athletes racing on the main road through Maclay Gardens State Park, north of Tallahassee, Florida. Along the race course you would also see men wearing fezzes, because the annual Mother's Day 5K has always been hosted by the Marzuq Shrine Temple. Zach DeVeau of Tallahassee won the Shrine’s sixteenth annual Mother’s Day 5K on Saturday morning, 11 May 2019, running 18:19. Dr. Katie Sherron was the first woman in the race, placing fourth overall in 21:08.

You could call it a family affair, because DeVeau and Sherron are married. The couple were also first man and first woman at the 2015 Mother’s Day 5K, as well as at a few other races over the years.


“This is our first double win in a while,” noted DeVeau.

That may be because for a while, at many races either DeVeau or Sherron was pushing their son, Barrett, along the course in a baby stroller. Thanks to Barrett, Sherron was also the first mother at the Mother’s Day 5K.


The 5K began right at 8:30 AM, heading uphill from the Lake Hall Recreation Area. Kurt Dietrich, winner of the 2017 and 2018 Mother’s Day races, led the field. DeVeau trailed, moving into second by the end of the first quarter mile.

“We went out, and I thought the first mile was much faster than it was,” recalled DeVeau. “But the clock said 6:00, so I just kept going at that pace.”


Just beyond the mile mark, the runners left the pavement as the race took them onto the Lake Overstreet trails for the second mile of the race.


“I like the trails,” said DeVeau. “I used to train on those trails a lot. By the time I reached the power line easement I had caught Kurt.”

DeVeau overtook Dietrich late in the second mile. Early in the third mile the race was all but over, with DeVeau about a hundred yards ahead and pulling away. Unchallenged on his way back to Lake Hall, DeVeau crossed the finish line first in 18:19. Dietrich was second in 18:47. Michael Martinez was the first master runner in the race, placing third overall in 20:14.


Soon after the race started, everyone was chasing Kurt Dietrich, but the runner closest in pursuit was Maya Tang, a Deerlake Middle School eighth-grader. With only Dietrich ahead of her, Tang was leading the women’s field.

“She went out pretty quickly,” said Sherron.


Sherron, though, soon caught the fast-starting Tang.


“At the mile,” said Sherron. “Exactly at the mile mark.”

For the remaining two miles, the race belonged to Sherron, who finished in a winning 21:08. Tang was second in the women’s standings and fifth overall in 22:47. After moving up on Tang late in the race, Shannon Colavecchio finished a close third in the women's division, placing sixth overall in 22:54. Colavecchio was the first woman master in the race.


27 athletes finished the Marzuq Shrine Temple’s 2019 Mother’s Day 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.

Brad Busboom and Kat Sack win a steamy trail race in Maclay Gardens

On Saturday morning, 21 July 2018, the air in Tallahassee’s Maclay Gardens State Park seemed humid enough to drink. It wasn’t quite humid enough to drown the mosquitoes, though. Nor was it humid enough to put the damper on the competition in the third race of Gulf Winds Track Club’s 2018 Summer Trail Series. On the men’s side, Brad Busboom and Jim Schafer battled for four of the five miles before Busboom broke away to win in 38:26. On the women's side, the race came down to a final kick, with Kat Sack prevailing over Emily Molen 44:39 to 44:40.

GWTC’s Summer Trail Series has been around since 2013. Before the Maclay Gardens event, there had been 22 series races. During that history, the circuit had taken runners to a variety of Tallahassee trails, but never to the paths in Maclay Gardens. Before 1994, you might have seen a wedding in the Gardens, but not much in the way of places to hike, bike, or run. That year, though, the state park acquired the Lake Overstreet tract, adding a trail system.


Next door to the Lake Overstreet tract is Maclay School, where Gary Droze has been coaching cross-country and track longer than the tract has been part of Maclay Gardens. If anyone knows the Overstreet trails, it’s Coach Droze. At Saturday’s trail race, Droze bolted out into the lead, making it to the narrow South Bike Extension Trail before the rest of the field. As difficult as passing could be on the single-track path, though, Brad Busboom and Jim Schafer were able to get around Droze. Busboom took over the lead, with Schafer a few steps behind. With just over a mile to go, Busboom started to pull away from Schafer.

“He started to take off right at the last water station,” said Schafer. “I think he had a lot left in the tank. He’s a good runner.”


The last mile included a lot of downhill and Busboom expanded his lead on the descent, going on to win in 38:26. Schafer was second in 39:02. Droze was the first master runner in the race and third overall in 40:18.


Emily Molen, a rising junior on the Chiles High cross-country team, had taken the women’s title on 23 June 2018 at Munson Hills in the first trail series race. But on 7 July 2018 at Phipps Park in the second race of the circuit, Kat Sack had been first woman. At Maclay Gardens, Molen set the early pace for the women’s field, leaving Sack well behind.

“The first mile of the race, being uphill, my quads were already burning,” said Sack.


Despite muscle pain, Sack made up the ground, overtaking Molen about four miles into the race. Molen hung on, remaining only steps behind. Sack was able to maintain her slim lead, though, crossing the finish line in 44:39 to Molen’s 44:40. Sack and Molen were eleventh and twelfth overall. Lourena Maxwell was the first woman master and third female finisher, 26th overall in 48:54.
