Leonardo Canete and Averi Lewis lead a swarm of runners on the Red Bug Trail

In Tallahassee, Florida on Saturday evening, 20 May 2023, the heat wasn't excessive at Phipps Park, nor was the humidity extreme. The park wasn't plagued with voracious swarms of insects. In spite of the absence of those signs of a North Florida summer, it was nevertheless time for the first race in Gulf Winds Track Club's 2023 Summer Trail Series, the Red Bug Trail 7K. Tallahassee master runner Leonardo Canete won the race by more than 700 meters, finishing the rugged course in 33:26. Tallahassee triathlete Averi Lewis took the top spot in the women's standings, placing thirteenth overall in 40:05.

The race started from Forestmeadows Athletic Center, with race director Bobby York sending the athletes on their way right at 6:00 PM. Leonardo Canete was leading almost immediately, and had a sizeable lead by the time the runners made it into the trees. Canete ran alone through the woods.

"I saw a little snake on the trail," Canete recalled later. "A black racer."

That was the only racer he saw, as he finished the course unchallenged in a winning 33:26. Behind Canete, Barry Drenkhahn and master runner Jeremy Floyd had a back-and-forth battle for the runner-up spot. Drenkhahn ultimately prevailed, beating Floyd to the finish line 37:14 to 37:20.

Canete's win was his fifth in the Trail Series, going back to 2021. 2021 was also the first year that Averi Lewis raced the trail series. Lewis finished in the top five in each of the four races that year, including a third-place finish at Red Bug, where she ran 40:52. Lewis missed the Trail Series in 2022; she was busy at in Naperville, Illinois, where she was coaching the North Central College women's triathlon team to a national championship in NCAA Division III. Back in Tallahassee in 2023, she was also back in the Trail Series. Lewis lowered her Red Bug time to 40:05 and won the women's division, leading the distaff field from start to finish.

Ten-year-old Acadia Hassell nabbed second in the women's standings, placing fifteenth overall in 40:49. At 42:41, Alyssa Terry was the third woman in the race and nineteenth overall. Terry was the women's champ at the fourth and final trail series event of 2022, the Cadillac Trail Race.

Coming in 23rd and 24th overall, Melissa Sullivan edged Carrie Murphy for the fourth spot in the women's division, both athletes clocked in 44:11. Murphy was the first woman master in the race.
