Clifton Lewis and Maxwell Wester conquer at the Crusader Cross-Country Classic

If you saw Clifton Lewis running in Tallahassee, Florida on Thursday, 30 September 2021, you might have thought that she was doing a solo workout. You would be wrong, though; Lewis was racing the girls' 3K at Holy Comforter Episcopal School's Crusader Classic Cross-Country Meet. It would have been a forgiveable error, because the eighth-grader finished the race almost half a kilometer ahead of the field, logging a winning 11:17. The girls' race may have been lacking in drama up front, but not so the boys' 3K. In that race, Mariana seventh-grader Maxwell Wester outkicked Luke Meli, a Community Christian eighth-grader, for the win, 10:46 to 10:47. The Maclay girls took the team title in their race with a near-perfect 17 points, and Community Christian placed first in the boys' race with 53 points.

Clifton Lewis also won the Crusader Classic girls' 3K in 2020; that year a soaking ran fell during the race and the runners had to start in waves due to COVID-19. In 2021 the weather was fair and Lewis got to face all her competitors on the starting line. She didn't face them for long. Once the race was under way, Lewis spent most of the 3000-meters around the Holy Comforter grounds running away from her rivals. After Lewis had logged her winning 11:17, Maclay seventh-grader Ellie Mazziotta finished as runner-up in 13:25. Another Maclay seventh-grader, Lilly Bell, was third in 11:30.


Mazziotta and Bell weren't the only Marauders in the top ten. Maclay eighth-grader Mae Deison was fourth in 13:38, with Maclay sixth-grader Mary Price a close fifth in 13:39. Seventh-grader Aurora Earlywine completed the Maraders' scoring, finishing ninth in 14:09. The Maclay girls had 17 points and their third straight Crusader Classic win.


Community Leadership placed second with 68 points behind seventh-grader Ashlynn Naumann (11th, 14:30), their first finisher. Trinity Catholic edged Riversprings for third in the team standings, 74 to 77. Trinity's top runner was sixth-grader Danielle Sasso, eighth in 14:06, while Riversprings was led by sixth-grader Aerynson Smith, seventh in 14:03.

After Maxwell Wester and Luke Meli had fought for first, with Wester prevailing 10:46 to 10:47, there was another homestretch struggle third place. This time, three athletes came charging for home. Trinity Catholic eighth=grader Mark Moore dashed in ahead of the other two, taking third in 11:21. Eighth-grader Charles Wilson of Community Christian followed, fourth in 11:22, A few steps back, Trinity Catholic sixth-grader James Mogg placed fifth in 11:24.


With Meli and Wilson, Community Christian had put two runners in the top ten, but so had Trinity Catholic, Holy Comforter, Marianna, and Maclay. Community Christian's remaining three scorers were eighth-grader Benjamin Reeves (14th, 12:13), sixth-grader Landon Reeves (20th, 12;43), and eighth-grader Jeremy Collier (21st, 12:45). That gave the Chargers 53 points and first place, Community Christian's first ever win at the Crusader Classic.


Maclay edged Wester's Marianna team for second, 62 to 63. Maclay's first finisher was eighth-grader Collins Dickson, ninth in 11:41. Hosts and 2020 champs Holy Comforter placed fourth with 72 points, led by eighth-grader Luke Springer (6th, 11:32). Of fourteen schools represented in the boys' race, seven had full teams.


Racing returns to Holy Comforter on Tuesday afternoon, 12 October 2021, with the Tallahassee Open. The girls' 3K is scheduled for 5:15 PM ET, with the boys' 3K following at 5:45.

Leon's Patrick Koon tears a 15:32 at ARPXC in the Big Bend Invite

Savaging a field of over 100 high school athletes, Leon sophomore Patrick Koon won the Big Bend Invitational boys' 5K, running 15:32 at Tallahassee's Apalachee Regional Park Championship Cross-Country Course on Saturday morning, 4 September 2021. Koon may have been more than 200 meters ahead of every runner in the race, but it was the Chiles High boys who took the team title, outscoring Leon 33 to 40. Leon junior Lillee Tang ran 19:53 to win the girls' 5K, a race where Leon took first in the team standings with 36 points.

The Big Bend Invitational Cross-Country Meet always comes very early in Florida's High School cross-country season. In 2021 it was less than two weeks after the official first day of racing. You don't expect to see fast times that early in the season. Before the 2021 Invitational, the meet record had been a more-than-respectable 15:51 run by Chiles senior Michael Phillips in 2017. Phillips had gone on to run 15:15 at Apalachee Regional Park later that season, winning his second state championship. And no one else had broken 16:00 at the Big Bend Invitational since then.


No one else till Koon.


Eight days earlier, the Leon sophomore had posted a winning 15:15 at the Cecil Field Summer Classic in Jacksonville, Florida on a course that averages faster than ARPXC. At Cecil Field, though, Koon's competition was close enough that he could hear their footsteps. He would have to posess remarkably good ears to be able to say the same about the Big Bend race. His 15:32 put him almost 200 meters ahead of the next runner, well out of earshot. And out of eyeshot--on the Apalachee Regional Park course, the finish line isn't visible from 200 meters out. It was Koon's best mark yet at ARPXC; as a frosh he had run 15:56 on the course in the State Championship race.


Chiles senior Ben Kirbo trailed Koon across the fnish line, placing second in 16:11. Another Chiles harrier, Timberwolf junior Wyatt Townsend, took third in 16:25. Leon junior Jake Rogers was fourth in 16:45.


Two more Timberwolves cracked the top ten for Chiles--senior Filippo Reina finshed fifth in 17:13 and junior Owen Franklin was tenth in 18:01. Chiles senior Tyler Canavan finished the scoring for his team, placing thirteenth in 18:25. That gave the Timberwolves 33 points and first place in the eight-team field, the Chiles' boys first team win at Big Bend since 2017.


Leon, led by Koon, put up 40 points to take second in the team standings. Maclay was third with 90 points behind their top runner, Clayton Know. A junior, Knox was sixth in 17:27.

Before the high school boys raced, the high school girls had the course. Lillee Tang of Leon and Susan Gracie Koeppel of Maclay had already been in one race together during 2021; both had run at the Cecil Field Summer Classic. In that Jacksonville race, Tang had placed tenth and Koeppel 23rd. That order of finish didn't change at the Big Bend Invitational. Tang, a junior, nabbed first in 19:53, while Maclay sophomore Koeppel was runner-up in 19:58. Leon junior Lily Moore placed third in 19:58, and Maclay sophomore Mary Clayton Soto finished fourth in 20:28.


Maclay had two more runners in the top ten, eighth grader Lillian Koeppel (7th, 20:40) and frosh Kassidy Monninger (10th, 21:25). But Leon also grabbed two more top ten spots, thanks to juniors Mallory Robinson (8th, 21:02) and Stella Lewis (9th, 21:03). And while Maclay was waiting for their fifth scorer to arrive, Leon frosh Madi Sims crossed the finish line in 22:01, placing fifteenth and giving the Lions 36 points and first place.


The Maclay girls were second with 44 points. Wakulla, led by senior Clara Alford (11sth, 21:27), edged Chiles for third place, 76 to 80. Chiles top runner was senior Ella Hodges, fifth in 20:34. Nine schools had teams in the girls' 5K.

The middle school races followed the high school events. Tallahassee's Clifton Lewis had run the middle school girls' 3K at the Big Bend Invitational every year the meet had been held. She had placed second in 2017, seventh in 2018, and first in 2019. She added another win to that record in 2021, running a meet record 11:34. Fifth-grader Charlotte Sikes, racing for the Red Hills Running Club, took second in 12:56. Maclay eighth-grader Lillian Koeppel, back for more racing after her 20:40 in the high school 5K, placed third in the 3K with a 13:30.


Four other Marauders joined Koeppel in the top ten--seventh-grader Ellie Mazziotta was sixth in 14:03, eighth-grader Mae Deison was seventh in 14:08, sixth-grader Mary Price was eighth in 14:15, and seventh-grader Lilly Bell was ninth in 14:18. With all five scorers in the top ten, the Maclay girls had 28 points and first place.


The Red Hills girls were second in the team standings with 49 points. Trinity Catholic edged Fairview Middle School (competing as the Falcon Track Club) for third, 80 to 84. Trinity Catholic's first finisher was sixth-grader Danielle Sasso (15th, 15:28); Fairview's fastest was sixth-grader Miasia Harden (11th, 14:55).

Luke Meli, a Community Christian eighth-grader, won the middle school boys' 3K by 30 meters, getting the job done with a winning 11:36. Three athletes battled for the runner-up spot--Community Christian eighth-grader Charles Wilson, Holy Comforter seventh-grader Randon Manausa, and Trinity Catholic eighth-grader Mark Moore. Wilson got across the finish line before the others, nabbing second in 11:43. Manausa was third and Moore fourth, both in 11:44.


Community Christian had grabbed the first two places, but Fairview Middle School, competing as the Falcon Track Club, three runners in the top ten--seventh-grader Jack Koon was sixth in 11:55, eighth-grader Thomas Emari was seventh in 12:01, and eighth-grader Chandler Grace was tenth in 12:10. Two more Falcons--seventh-grader Ethan Nicholson (14th, 12:34) and eighth-grader Kyron Long (21st, 13:39)--brought their team's score to 51 points. However, Community Christian also had 51. Following NFHS rules, the win would go to the team with the fastest sixth runner. Falcon The Falcon's sixth runner, seventh-grader Braxton Cabrera, placed 29th in 14:20, finishing ahead of Community Christian's sixth runner and giving the team in red the win. Trinity Catholic placed third in the eight-team field, scoring 65 points.

Leonardo Canete and Clifton Lewis storm to victory on the Red Bug Trail

Clouds and rain dominated Tallahassee, Florida on Saturday, 28 August 2021, part of the mass of moisture that blanketed the Southeast United States--a blanket centered on Hurricane Ida. The rain soaked the paths in Phipps Park, including the course for the fourth and final race of Gulf Winds Track Club's 2021 Summer Trail Series, the Red Bug Trail 7K.


"This is a very technical course," remarked a course marshal, stepping around a puddle.


In trail running parlance, "technical" refers to the probability of falling down and getting hurt.

Tallahassee master runner Leonardo Canete overcame the technical aspects of the Red Bug Trail on that wet Saturday and won the race by nearly a minute, running 34:23. Thirteen-year-old Clifton Lewis took first in the women's standings, placing sixth overall in 38:10. It was the second Trail Series win for Canete and the third for Lewis.


Iffy weather cut down on attendance at the Trail Series finale, and lightning delayed the start. But the storm let up, and the athletes were under way at 6:10 PM. Canete was first into the woods, and then began the job of trying not to slip and fall on the muddy, winding paths. He succeeded well enough to finish first in 38:10. The fight for the runner-up spot was a close affair, but Brad Busboom prevailed over Kyle Kraeft, both runners clocked in 35:03. Like Canete, Busboom also has two career wins in the Trail Series.

A few hundred meters after the start, Clifton Lewis was the first woman into the woods, just two seconds ahead of Amelia Bryant. Bryant had beaten Lewis in the second Trail Series event, the Swamp Forest Trail Race on 10 July 2021. At Red Bug, though, once they were in the woods Lewis stretched her two-second lead into a gap of more than two minutes, taking top woman honors in 38:10. Bryant was the second woman to splash across the finish line, tenth overall in 40:28. Averi Lewis finished third on the women's side and eleventh overall in 40:52. Ruffian Tyner was the first woman master and sixth female finisher, 22nd overall in 46:48.


72 athletes finished the 2021 Red Bug Trail Race. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the run.

Nicholas Samuel wins and Katie Sherron sets a record in their return to Madness

In Tallahassee, Florida, there are three cross-country races at Gulf Winds Track Club's Miller Landing Madness--the 8K, the 5K, and the 3K. Nicholas Samuel has run each of them. In 2016, as an eighth-grader on the Fairview Middle School cross-country team, he raced the 3K. In 2017, as a frosh on the Lincoln High cross-country squad, he raced the 5K. In 2018, as a Lincoln sophomore, he raced the 8K. On Saturday morning, 14 August 2021, Samuel returned to Phipps Park for another crack at the 8K. This time he won, logging 29:18 on the hilly course. Katie Sherron, another Miller Landing Madness veteran, won her third women's title in the 8K, placing second overall in 31:28.

The 8K and the 5K started from the same line at 8:00 AM. Nicholas Samuel was setting the pace for the longer race almost immediately; he was 70 meters ahead of the rest of the field at the mile mark. While Samuel widened that gap, Tallahassee master runner Leonardo Canete moved into second in the men's standings where he ultimately finished, third overall in 31:37. Ryan Truchelut, coming off a win a week earlier in the Breakfast On The Track Mile, was the third man and fourth overall in 32:24.


"There was no water to run through this year," noted Katie Sherron.

If anyone were to remember the water barrier from Miller Landing Madnesses of the past, it would be Sherron, who raced her fifth Madness in 2021. Sherron wasn't the only runner in the 2021 women's field with Madness experience--Sheryl Rosen, a four-time women's champ of the 8K, was also on the starting line. Rosen also owned the fastest women's time in the Miller Landing 8K, her 32:17 winning time in the 2011 race.


That mark had stood for ten years, but it wouldn't see an eleventh. Sherron saw to that, immediately taking the lead over the women's field. Throughout the race she trailed only male runners and not many of those, moving into second overall during the last mile. Sherron held that position, finishing in 31:28, almost a minute faster than the previous women's best in the Miller Landing Madness 8K. Rosen was second in 38:04, finishing nineteenth overall. Claudia Hernandez was the third woman and 25th overall in 39:27. Laura Reina was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, 30th overall in 40:43.


89 athletes finished the 8K.

Darting out ahead of the fastest 8K competitors, Brock Granberg led the 5K field. Never challenged, Granberg finished well over 300 meters ahead of the next runner in a winning time on 17:34. In a showdown of two high school seniors, David Morrison of Lincoln edged Bainbridge High's Landon Watts for second, 18:50 to 18:53.

Eight of the top ten men were high school athletes, and the women's 5K was similarly dominated by preps, starting with Susan Koeppel. A Maclay sophomore, Koeppel topped the women's field with a 20:48, placing thirteenth overall. Another sophomore, Wakulla's Liliana Lewis, was second in the women's standings, sixteenth overall in 21:01. Wakulla senior Clara Alford took the third woman's spot, finishing 22nd overall in 21:57.

Aaron Guyer was the top master runner in the 5K, running 21:58 to place 23rd overall and 20th in the men's standings. Tina Smith outkicked Melissa Martin to become the top woman master and 29th female finisher, placing 82nd overall in 26:53. At 26:54, Martin was 30th in the women's standings and 83rd overall.


165 athletes finished the 5K.

Most of the runners in the 5K were high school athletes, getting in a pre-season cross-country race. Similarly, the 3K field was made up largely of middle school athletes. This was reflected in the overall male and female winners of the 3K, Walker Elrod and Clifton Lewis. Elrod, an eighth-grader harrier from Grace Christian Academy in Bainbridge, took first overall in the 3K, running 10:52. Lewis, another eighth-grader, was the first girl in the race, placing third overall in 11:36.

Jonathan Kiros, a seventh-grader on the cross-country team at Deerlake, was second in the boys' standings at 11:15. Asher Robertson, an incoming frosh at Lincoln High, was third in the boys' division and fourth overall in 12:15.


Seventh-grader Annabelle Wiktorski, a Montford Middle School Mustang cross-country runner, was the second girl in the 3K and fifth overall in 12:18. Sixth-grader Chloe Molen took third in the girls' race and eighth overall in 12:38.

Jonathan Stern and Clifton Lewis pluck wins at Maclay Gardens

On Saturday morning, 24 July 2021, Jonathan Stern was in a hurry. He was in a hurry to get into the lead of the Maclay Gardens Trail Race. He was in a hurry to finish the nine-kilometer course through the Overstreet Tract of Maclay Gardens State Park, north of Tallahassee, Florida. But when he had finished, Stern had won the third race in Gulf Winds Track Club's Summer Trail Race Series, running 37:48. Thirteen-year-old Clifton Lewis was first in the women's division, placing eighth overall in 44:06.

It had been a dry year in Tallahassee. On the morning of the race, there was no water at all in the creek that carried overflow from Lake Overstreet. Nevertheless, there had been enough recent rain that the air was heavy with humidity, typical of July in Florida's Big Bend. The grass was dew-covered, and the ground itself was moist. Those were the conditions when the race got started, just a few minutes after 8:00 AM.


And just a few seconds after that start, Jonathan Stern was setting the pace for the field. A former cross-country and track athlete at Lake Forest College, Stern was closely followed by master runner Leonardo Canete. Two weeks earlier Canete had won the second event of this years Gulf Winds Trail Series, the Swamp Forest Trail Race. But the Maclay Gardens Race belonged to Stern. Stern continued to lead and took first in 37:48, finishing well over 200 meters ahead of the next runner. Tristan Lanasa ran 38:58 for second, his best placing yet in this year's Trail Series. Michael Nesius was third in 39:22. Canete was the first master runner in the race, coming in fourth overall in 39:34.

The Maclay Gardens Trail Race was Stern's debut on the Summer Trail Race circuit as well as his first Trail Series win. The first three Trail Series events in 2021 had three different male winners--Daniel Wurgler in the Tom Brown Park Trail Race, Leonardo Canete in the Swamp Forest Trail Race, and now Stern in the Maclay Gardens Trail Race. The women, on the other hand, had a repeat winner in Clifton Lewis. Lewis got her first win of the 2021 circuit at the Tom Brown Trail Race, then added a second victory at the Maclay Gardens Trail Race with a winning 44:06.


Amelia Bryant was second in the women's standings, finishing ninth overall in 44:55. Bryant had been the first woman in the Swamp Forest Trail Race. Hannah Hosay, an alum of the Maclay School cross-country team, was the third woman and tenth overall in 45:06. Ruffian Tyner was the first woman master and seventh female finisher, 29th overall in 53:19.
