Kurt Dietrich and Laura McDermott take first at Run 2-1-1

The fifth annual Run 2-1-1 5K on Saturday morning, 2 June 2018, was Kurt Dietrich’s fourth five-kilometer race in Tallahassee since early May. When it was over, Dietrich had his fourth 5K win since early May. Dietrich was first across the finish line in Railroad Square Art Park, running 18:26. Laura McDermott was the first woman in the 3.1-mile race, placing sixth overall in 22:01.

2-1-1 Big Bend, a non-profit mental health hotline, has held the Run 2-1-1 each year since 2014. The early races were in Southwood, but in 2018 the organization moved the race to Railroad Square, with a course that took in the Capital Cascades Trail and Cascades Park. Close to a hundred athletes showed up to race at the new venue.


“There were lots of turns, especially in Cascades Park,” said McDermott, the women’s winner. “But it was well marked. I had no trouble following the course. I always knew where to go.”

Other runners commented on the scenery along the route--the landscaping along the Cascades Trail/FAMU Way corridor, Lake Anita, and the Cascades Park Bridge. Two years earlier, at the ribbon cutting for that section of the Cascades Trail, Mayor Andrew Gillum had declared, “This is what an All-American city looks like.”


Kurt Dietrich didn’t dawdle to look around during the Run 2-1-1, though. Just minutes into the race he was well ahead of the field. Enijah Thomas, a rising seventh-grader on the Fairview Middle School cross-country team, trailed Dietrich in second. Chris Myrick overtook Thomas in Cascades Park, early in the second mile of the race, but no one was catching Dietrich. His winning 18:26 put him nearly a quarter mile ahead of the next runner. Myrick took second in 19:59, and Carson McGinn was third in 21:43. Enijah Thomas held off Michael Kennett to take fourth, both runners clocked in 22:00. Kennett was the first master runner in the race.

At 22:01, a step or two behind Kennett, McDermott took the women's title. Monica Toth was the women's runner-up and eighth overall in 22:50. Jasmin McClellan was third in the women's standings, placing eleventh overall in 23:55. Wendy Rude was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, fifteenth overall in 24:50.


98 athletes finished the 2018 Run 2-1-1 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.

Winning is a piece of cake for Kurt Dietrich and Vicky Droze at the Mother's Day 5K

In 2017, Kurt Dietrich won the sixteenth annual Tails & Trails 5K, and seven days later won the Marzuq Shrine Temple's Mother's Day 5K. In 2018 Dietrich was a repeat winner at the Tails & Trails 5K on May 5, then returned to Maclay Gardens on May 12 for a title defense at the Mother’s Day 5K. He won again, going 18:40. In the women's competition Vicky Droze took first, placing eighth overall in 23:03 and outrunning last year's winner Laura Reina. 92 athletes finished the race.

The Marzuq Shrine Temple first held their Mother's Day 5K in 2004. Every year since then you could depend on finding that race on the north side of Tallahassee in Maclay Gardens State Park on the Saturday morning before Mother's Day. It became a tradition. The awards were another tradition; cakes for the winners. The cakes disappeared in 2017, replaced with a more usual sort of prize. After a popular outcry, baked goods were back in 2018.


“Let us know what we can improve. We want to make this the best race possible,” the race director urged repeatedly. The return of the cakes confirms that the Shriners really do listen to the runners.

Cakes were back, and so were Kurt Dietrich and Laura Reina when the race started from the Lake Hall Recreation Area at 8:30 AM. Dietrich was leading right after leaving the starting line, dashing up the hill from the lake. Filippo Reina, a Deerlake Middle School eighth-grader, was right behind him. Paul Guyas, runner-up in the race in 2017, moved into third during the first half mile. By the last mile Guyas had passed Reina and was running in second. In the 2017 race, Guyas had been within striking distance of Dietrich with a mile to go. This time around, Dietrich was too far ahead to challenge.


“I expected Paul to be closer than he was,” said Dietrich.

Instead, Dietrich crossed the finish line with a lead of more than 200 meters, winning the race in 18:40. Guyas was the first master runner and overall runner-up in 19:33. Master runners Chuck Lang and Bill McNulty took the next two places, running 20:06 and 20:11. Filippo Reina was fifth in 20:19.


“It was kind of a disappointing time this week,” said Dietrich. “I’ve been tired the last few weeks so I knew it wouldn’t be as fast as last year.”


Laura Reina led the women’s field at the mile mark, with master runner Vicky Droze and Jasmin McClellan seven seconds behind. During the second mile, though, Droze left McClellan behind and caught Reina. After that it was Droze’s race. Back at Lake Hall she was the first woman across the finish line, running 23:03. Laura Reina was the women’s runner-up, ninth overall in 23:31. Jasmin McClellan held off Paula O'Neill for the third woman's spot, 24:05 to 24:08. McClellan and O'Neill were eleventh and twelfth overall.

After getting his second win in two consecutive Saturdays at the 2017 Mother’s Day 5K, Dietrich had followed that up with a third winning weekend in a row at the Big Bend Filipino-American Association 5K. Dietrich plans to be in Cascades Park on May 19, trying for another win in the third annual BBFAA 5K. Other runners in the area are heading south that day for the twelfth annual Wakulla Springs 5K, or west to Blountstown, Florida for the seventh annual Catfish Crawl 5K. It may be summer weather now, but that just means that summer racing has started.

Andrew Smith and Amanda Sava sail the trails at "Tails and Trails"

Tallahassee’s Tom Brown Park, Lafayette Heritage Park, and the Alford Greenway are connected by a network of trails, more miles of pathways than you could walk in a single afternoon. On Saturday morning, May 5, Andrew Smith raced 21.1 kilometers on those trails in 1:20:46, winning the Animal Shelter Foundation's seventeenth annual Tails & Trails Half Marathon. Amanda Sava was the first woman in the race, placing eighth overall in 1:45:35.

There were four races in the Tails & Trails that morning, also including a 10K, a 5K, and a one-mile fun run. The half marathon was the longest and it was also the earliest, starting from in front of the Tallahassee Animal Shelter at 8:00 AM. From the first, Andrew Smith was in the lead.


“After the mile I could tell there was no one there,” said Smith. “I just kept trying to hit six-minute miles.”


Don’t get the impression that it was easy, running in and out of the Lake Lafayette basin.

“It was a tough one,” said Smith. “The hills were no joke.”


When Smith returned to the Animal Shelter, finishing the race in 1:20:46, he was nearly three kilometers ahead of the next runner. It could have been lonesome out on the trails, but Smith had a lead cyclist to follow. The other athletes, though, were out of sight of both Smith and the cyclist. They had to rely on course markers and course marshals to find their way through the race.

“I ran off the course twice,” said Geb Kiros after finishing the half marathon. “I am not very happy.”


In spite of those detours, Kiros was the first master runner in the race, finishing second overall in 1:32:57. Master runner Jack McDermott took third in 1:33:46.

Finishing second to Amanda Sava in the women's standings, Lourena Maxwell was the first woman master in the half marathon and fourteenth overall in 1:51:38. Michelle Hadden edged Laura McDermott for the third women's spot, both runners clocked in 1:52:58. Hadden and McDermott were fifteenth and sixteenth overall.

At 8:30, while the half-marathoners were still on the trails, headed for the turnaround on the out-and-back course, the 10K and the 5K got underway. Charlie Johnson soon got down to the business of running away from the rest of the 10K field.

“He was about a minute ahead at the turnaround and he maintained that,” said Chris O’Kelley, the 2017 Tails & Trails 10K winner.


With 188 runners behind him, Johnson had a lot of outbound traffic to deal with on the return trip. One narrow gate was clogged by a file of runners headed for the turnaround. Johnson solved that problem by leaping the fence next to the gate. Undelayed, he continued to the finish line at the Animal Shelter, taking first in the 10K with a 37:16. Chris O’Kelley took second in 38:11, and Ryan Truchelut was third in 40:22. Paul Guyas was the first master runner in the 10K, placing seventh overall in 43:32.

Jillian Heddaeus won the women’s title in the 10K, placing fifteenth overall in 47:16. Heddaeus finished more than 300 meters ahead of the next woman in the race, but she found herself running with one of the men.


“We had a good little back-and-forth going,” said Heddaeus. “Then he went forth and I went back.”

Kaley Ford was the second woman in the 10K, placing 21st overall in 48:54. Kenya Rich was the first woman master and third female finisher, 25th overall in 50:06.

Kurt Dietrich won the Tails & Trails 5K for the second year in a row, running 19:13. Matt Triggs was the first master runner in the race, finishing second overall in 21:21. Ten-year-old Noah Deem took third in 22:29.

Another youngster, eleven-year-old Madison Sims, took first in the women’s standings, placing eleventh overall in 24:27. Amelia Bryant was a close second, placing twelfth overall in 24:31. Anna Dower was the third woman and fifteenth overall in 24:39. Amy Triggs was the first woman master and the fourth female finisher in the 5K, 32nd overall in 26:04.


821 athletes crossed the finish line at the 2018 Tails & Trails, 104 in the half marathon, 192 in the 10K, 460 in the 5K, and 65 in the mile. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the races.

Dietrich wins and Rosen runs a record 18:47 at the Big Bend Habitat For Humanity 5K

Like much of Leon County, during the 1800s the country around Centerville, Florida was given over to cotton production. Before the cotton came, though, the land had been covered in wiregrass and longleaf pines. And as the cotton fields disappeared during the twentieth century, the Centerville area returned to wiregrass and longleaf pine. More recently, the Centerville Conservation Community was established, guaranteeing that a portion of the Centerville district will remain wiregrass-and-pine, punctuated with the occasional house. Oh, and some paved streets, too, because to get to their home in an exclusive conservation community, no one wants to drive on a dirt road.

On those Centerville streets, Kurt Dietrich held off Sheryl Rosen, 18:44 to 18:47, to win the fourth annual Big Bend Habitat For Humanity 5K on Saturday morning, 10 March 2018. Rosen's time was a new women's record for the event, eclipsing the old mark of 21:16 set by Kate Harrison in 2014 at the inaugural Big Bend Habitat For Humanity 5K.


Gary Droze was the first master runner in the race and the second male finisher, placing third overall in 19:48. Master runner Geb Kiros was third in the men's standings and fourth overall in 19:48. Kiros had won the race in 2016, setting the Big Bend Habitat For Humanity 5K record of 17:58.


Nancy Moody was the second woman in the 5K and ninth overall in 22:46. Monica Judd, the 2016 women's champ, was the top woman master in the 2018 race and the third female finisher, tenth overall in 22:55.


77 athletes finished the 2018 Big Bend Habitat For Humanity 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club timed the race.

    Dietrich and Proctor earn starring roles in the Break-A-Leg 5K

    Break-A-Leg 5KAfter runner-up finishes at the Tulip Trot 5K on 27 January 2018 and the Wolf Dash 5K on 3 February 2018, Kurt Dietrich was first across the finish line at the sixth annual Break-A-Leg 5K on Saturday morning, 17 February 2018. Dietrich posted a 19:07 in the Tallahassee, Florida race. Master runner Nancy Proctor won the women's division, placing fifth overall in 23:49.


    Leon High senior Isaac Bakan took second in the race, running 21:43. David Yorio was the top master runner in the 5K, placing third overall in 22:52.


    Anna Dower was second in the women's standings and eighth overall in 24:22. Dana Siomins was the third woman and tenth overall at 25:42.


    111 athletes finished the 3.1-mile race, a fundraiser for Tallahassee's Young Actors Theatre.

    Dietrich and Ott win the Saint Jude 5K

    Kurt Dietrich won the fourth annual Saint Jude 5K To End Childhood Cancer in Tallahassee, Florida on Saturday morning, 11 November 2017, running 20:37 on the streets of the Southwood community. Master runner Kathy Ott was the first woman in the race, placing tenth overall in 25:10.


    Jacob Slupecki took second in the race, running 21:33. Gary Gayle was the first master runner in the race, placing third overall in 22:11.


    Master runner Karen McGinnis was second in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 25:19. Caitlin Sampson was the third female finisher and fourteenth overall in 26:14.


    80 athletes finished the 2017 Saint Jude 5K. Miles and Minutes, LLC, of Tallahassee timed the race.

    Kurt Dietrich extends his winning streak at the BBFAA 5K

    On Saturday, 6 May 2017, Kurt Dietrich won the Tails & Trails 5K. On Saturday, 13 May 2017, he won the Marzuq Shriners' Mother's Day 5K. On Saturday, 20 May 2017, Dietrich made it three in a row, winning Tallahassee, Florida's second annual Big Bend Filipino-American Association 5K. Finishing almost 200 meters ahead of the next runner, Dietrich clocked 18:47 for the 3.1-mile course through Cascades Park. Alese Autore ran 22:59 for the women's title, placing fifth overall.


    Myles Gibson was the fastest master runner in the race; the Donalsonville, Georgia athlete finished second overall in 18:47. Tallahassee master runner Michael Savage was third overall in 21:52.


    Marien Dimacali was the first woman master and second female finisher, sixth overall in 23:39. Audia Rabon was third in the women's standings and ninth overall in 25:07.


    53 athletes finished the 2017 BBFAA 5K. Miles and Minutes, LLC, of Tallahassee timed the race.

    It was Dietrich's and Reina's day at the Mother's Day 5K

    "I thought the guy in second was going to catch me on the last mile," said Kurt Dietrich.


    He wasn't, nor was anyone else going to catch Dietrich that Saturday morning, 13 May 2017. Leading from start to finish, Dietrich won the Marzuq Shrine Temple's fourteenth annual Mother's Day 5K, running 18:14. Laura Reina won the women's title in the 3.1-mile race through Tallahassee, Florida's Maclay Gardens State Park, placing eleventh overall.

    "I've run out here before, but it has been about ten years," said Dietrich.


    In fact, Dietrich went 18:12 on the Maclay Gardens course in 2007, back when he was a sophomore on the Lincoln High cross-country squad. It was long enough ago that the course was slightly different. But when the race started from Lake Hall at 8:30 AM, Dietrich could not have taken off any faster if he ran the Maclay Gardens route every day. Two kilometers into the race, when the race left the pavement and headed into the woods on the Lake Overstreet Trail, Dietrich was 100 meters ahead of his nearest challengers--a group of four athletes that included Mason McCord, Paul Guyas, Travis Parks, and Lane Williams.

    By the time the runners returned to the pavement, Paul Guyas had broken away from the rest of the pursuit group. With a kilometer to go, Guyas had narrowed Dietrich's lead to 50 meters. With the end of the race approaching, though, Dietrich pulled away once more. Back at Lake Hall he crossed the finish line in a winning 18:14. Guyas took second in 18:36. Mason McCord, a frosh on the Wakulla High cross-country team, was third in 18:46. Travis Parks was fourth in 19:02 and Lane Williams fifth in 19:22. Laryn Flikkema was the first master runner in the 5K, placing ninth overall in 21:34.


    Dietrich's win was his second in a week. Seven days earlier he had finished first in the Tails and Trails 5K.


    "I haven't done 5K races for a while," said Dietrich. "I'm trying to get back into that and get under 18:00 again."

    Like Dietrich, Laura Reina was never challenged during the race. The Tallahassee master runner led the women's field from wire to wire while covering the course in 22:34. Behind Reina, Christina Linton and master runner Nancy Stedman fought for the runner-up spot on the women's side. Stedman held that position for most of the first half of the race, but Linton took over in the closing stages. Linton ended the race fourteenth overall in 23:09, second in the women's standings. Stedman was the third woman and fifteenth overall in 23:25.

    Godin and Sherron prevail on the trail at Tails & Trails

    Call it two out of three for Eric Godin. Godin has won the half marathon in two of the last three years at the Animal Shelter Foundation's annual Tails and Trails, his most recent win coming on Saturday morning, 6 May 2017. In that 13.1 mile effort, Godin posted a winning time of 1:27:34. That same morning, Katie Sherron ran her own record to two out of two, winning the women's title in the half marathon for the second year in a row by placing tenth overall in 1:36.48.

    The Tallahassee, Florida Tails and Trails has been around since 2002, but the program only included 5K and 10K races plus a one-mile fun run till 2015, the year the half marathon was added. 13.1-miles long, the half marathon course went cross country through three separate parks--Tom Brown Park, Lafayette Heritage Park, and the Alford Greenway. There were views of Upper Lake Lafayette from the tops of steep bluffs, a jaunt across the Piney Z Lake dam, and a trip over the Canopy Walkway Bridge. After that the runners got to turn around and see it all again on their way back to the animal shelter where the race had started. Unlike previous years, the half marathon started before the 10K and 5K.


    "The weather was perfect," said Godin. "Starting half an hour earlier was nice."

    "There was a group of us going out," recalled Godin. "Zach DeVeau, Jon Manry, and I ran together for about two miles. Mike was about a hundred yards ahead of us going into Alford."


    Only Godin succeeded in overtaking Peymann.


    "I caught him right after we got out of the woods at Alford," said Godin.


    Godin spent the rest of the race opening a 300-meter gap on Peymann. At the animal shelter, Godin was first across the finish line in 1:27:34, with Peymann second in 1:29:03. Zach DeVeau took third in 1:30:16, and Jon Manry was fourth in 1:31:19.

    The women's competition was closer. For much of the race it was very close indeed for the first two women.


    "I was with Katie Sherron till nine-and-a-half miles," said Katie Sack. "Then she looked back, saw me, and took off."


    In the remaining six kilometers Sherron built up a lead of over 100 meters on Sack en route to a 1:36:48 win. Sack was the women's runner-up and fourteenth overall in 1:37:22. Jillian Heddaeus was third in the women's standings and fifteenth overall in 1:40:32. Nancy Stedman was the top woman master and eighth female finisher, 33rd overall in 1:52:59.

    At 8:30 AM, 30 minutes after the half marathoners had started their run, the 10K and and the 5K got under way. The 10K quickly developed into a duel between Leon High senior Matthew Cashin and Lincoln High alumnus Chris O'Kelley. For over half the race O'Kelley and Cashin were never more than a few steps apart as they left the rest of the field far behind. Cashin had won the Tails and Trails 10K in 2014 and 2015, but this time O'Kelley left him behind during the closing kilometers of the race. O'Kelley was first in 38:54 with Cashin runner-up in 39:56. Bobby Duggleby placed third in 41:02. Joel Piotrowski was the fastest master runner in the 10K, finishing fifth overall in 44:54.


    Tallahassee lawyer Sheryl Rosen won the Tails & Trails 10K women's title in 2009 and she added a second win in 2017, finishing first in the women's standings and fourth overall in 44:40. Alyssa Terry was the women's runner-up and seventh overall in 49:16. Monica Judd was the first woman master and third female finisher, placing ninth overall in 50:34.

    Finishing nearly half a kilometer ahead of the next runner, Kurt Dietrich won the Tails & Trails 5K in 18:47. At 20:47 Tim Unger was the first master runner and the overall runner-up. Hayden Swier was third in the 3.1-mile race with a 21:01.


    Christina Linton, the women's champ at the Hops and Half Shells 5K trail race just two weeks earlier, added another women's title to her collection with a 23:44 win in the Tails and Trails 5K, placing eighteenth overall in 23:44. Deerlake eighth-grader Brooke Waldal was second in the women's standings and 23rd overall in 24:27. Becky Leckinger was the top woman master and third female finisher, 30th overall in 25:01.
