Master runners Kiros and Judd show their mastery at the Habitat 5K

"Did I break the course record?" asked Geb Kiros. "My goal was to break the record."

The Florida A & M University biostatistics professor had met his goal. In winning the third annual Big Bend Habitat For Humanity 5K, Kiros had run 17:58, edging aside the old record of 17:59 run by Grady Smith at the 2015 race. Towards the end of the Tallahassee, Florida 5K, Kiros had some concerns about making the mark.

"There were four people in the way, walking on the road between me and the finish line," said Kiros.

The professor negotiated those obstacles successfully. Meanwhile, Kiros had no concerns from the competition that Saturday morning. Immediately after the race started at 8:30 AM on 12 November 2016, Kiros was ahead of the field. For the entire 3.1-mile route through the Centerville Conservation Community he ran practically alone, ultimately winning the race by almost 700 meters. Master runner Gary Johnston was second in 20:48, Erik Andersen held off a late-race challenge from eleven-year-old Nate Thompson to take third, 21:18 to 21:20.

Tallahassee master runner Monica Judd took the women's title, placing ninth overall in 23:07. Krista Killius had raced with Judd for the first kilometer of the race, but Judd opened a gap on Killius while climbing a hill near the end of the second kilometer.

"I was just trying to maintain pace on the uphill," said Judd. "And breathe!"

After that Judd continued to steadily pull away from Killius for the rest of race. Killius finished second in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 23:40. Nazarae Rodriguez was the third female finisher, placing fifteenth overall in 25:02

80 athletes finished the Tallahassee Board of Realtors' 2016 Big Bend Habitat For Humanity 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip timed the race.
