Fast times on a sloppy road for Linton and Sherron at the GWTC 30K

20:41 wouldn't be a bad time in a five-kilometer community race. It's fast enough to put an athlete ahead of the anonymous middle of the pack, and in the right race it might win an age group award.


But 20:41 wasn't Stan Linton's time for 5K on Saturday, 23 January 2017. 20:41 was the size of Linton's lead when the Florida State alumnus won the 40th annual Gulf Winds Track Club 30K that morning, running 1:46:13. Katie Sherron enjoyed a similarly large margin in the women's division. Placing fifth overall in 2:15:31, the FSU economics professor won the women's title by more than twenty minutes.

The race started from the Retreat at Bradley's Pond, heading north on Old Centerville Road. Old Centerville shows up on maps dating from the 1800s, and follows the same route that it did in the nineteenth century. Which isn't to say the road is entirely unchanged since the cotton-growing era. The southernmost couple of miles have been paved, which is the historical-preservation equivalent of slapping vinyl siding on Florida's Old Capitol building. Even the unpaved portions of Old Centerville Road are almost certainly a bit wider than they were in the pre-automotive days when traffic was limited to horses, mules, wagons, and people on foot. The clay has remained constant, though. The unpaved portions are still made of the same bright orange clay that give the Red Hills their name. And the clay still turns to bright orange mud when it rains.

Stan Linton took off quickly, hitting the first mile in 5:20 and the two-mile mark in 10:40. Vince Molosky, a five-time winner of the race, tried to stay in contact during those early miles, but soon had to let Linton go. The pace slacked off once the runners left the pavement and had to deal with the mud, but Linton still cruised past the six-mile mark in 32:50. Molosky reached six miles four minutes later. Linton's margin only got wider on his way to the turn-around at the 15K mark on Sunny Hill Plantation Road, and wider still during his return to Bradley's Pond and the finish line, where he crossed in a winning 1:46:13. It was faster than Linton's winning time in the 30K in 2013, and the best time on the course since the race moved to Old Centerville Road in 2006. You'd have to look back to 1994, a month after Linton was born, to find a better winning mark in the GWTC 30K. That was also when the race was on a flat and mud-free course in the St Marks National Wildlife Refuge.

Molosky was second in 2:06:54. Doug Bell was the top master runner in the 30K, moving up five places over the last twenty kilometers of the race to take third overall in 2:14:30. Paul Guyas was fourth in 2:14:52.


On the women's side, it would be hard to make a case that the mud slowed down Katie Sherron. Sherron won the GWTC 30K women's title for the fifth time in the last six years and the third time in a row, and her 2:15:31 was her best time yet in the race. Nikky Manausa was the women's runner-up and thirteenth overall in 2:35:40, while Jamila Allen was third in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 2:39:10. Tsige Tadesse was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, twentieth overall in 2:44:46.

Matthew Cashin won the concurrent 15K race, running 54:46. The Leon High senior had run the race each of the last three years and finished runner-up in 2016, but this was his first win in the 15K. Matthew McCurdy, a Florida State University grad student, took second in 55:34. Florida A & M University professor Geb Kiros was the top master in the shorter race and third overall in 58:59. Scott Lloyd, a junior on the Wakulla High cross-country team, finished fourth in 59:09.

The start of the 2017 GWTC 30K and 15K

Sheryl Rosen, a four-time women's champ in the 30K, was the top woman in the 15K for the second time in three years. Rosen ran 65:27, placing eighteenth overall. Katie Sack was the second woman and 33rd overall in 1:12:01. Emma Spencer took third in the women's standings and 36th overall in 1:12:39. Angela Wable was the first woman master in the 15K, the tenth female finisher and 48th overall in 1:16:41.

From 1982 to February 2001 the race was run in the Saint Marks National Wildlife Refuge. From December 2001 to 2005 the race was run at Natural Bridge. From 2006 to 2017 the GWTC 30K was run on Old Centerville Road and Sunny Hill Road, starting and finishing at Bradley's Retreat in Felkel.

Cashin and Churchill win in blowouts, but Chiles teams continue to dominate 3A District 3

At the FHSAA 3A District 3 Cross-Country Championship on Saturday morning, 22 October 2016, the winners were truly poster children for the "loneliness of the long-distance runner." In the five-kilometer boys' race through Tallahassee, Florida' Phipps Park, Leon senior Matt Cashin led from start to finish, running alone while successfully defending his district title with a 17:01. Lincoln frosh Alyson Churchill had an even more solitary run in the high school girls' 5K, winning by more than 400 meters in 18:29. Chiles High swept the team titles, the boys scoring a winning 40 points and the girls placing first in their race with 31.

For perhaps the first time during the 2016 season, it was the kind of weather that makes you think about cross-country, with clear skies, temperatures in the 50s, and a strong breeze. It certainly wasn't the muggy conditions eight weeks earlier, when many of the athletes had raced on the same Phipps Park course during the Cougar Cross-Country Challenge. At that race, Matt Cashin had finished third behind Michael Phillips and Matthew Newland of Chiles. The District boys' race didn't start out like that at all. Near the mile mark, Cashin was over a hundred meters ahead of the next runner.


"I wanted to finish high and score as few points for the team as possible," said Cashin. "I didn't expect Chiles to be holding back that much."

Cashin himself was letting up late in the race, but still crossed the finish line first in 17:01, five seconds faster than he had run at Cougar Cross-Country Challenge and 80 meters ahead of the next runner. Chiles junior Michael Phillips was second in 17:19 and Matthew Newland of Chiles took third in 17:20. Chiles also put Alex Gruenwald across the finish line ninth in 17:52, Robert Nowak tenth in 17:52, and Zachary Jackson sixteenth in 18:14. Those five athletes gave Chiles 40 points and their sixth-straight District 3 title since 2011, the first year that FHSAA divided Florida up into sixteen districts for cross-country. Leon was second with 57 points. Led by senior Joshua Liles, Lincoln placed third with 70 points. Behind the fourth place 17:24 performance of junior Samuel Skiles, Stanton was fourth in the team standings with 89 points. Those top four schools advanced to the 3A Region 1 championships. Columbia runners Yassin Raffay (7th, 17:35) and Burch Greene (12th, 18:00) also made the cut for the Region 1 meet, qualifying as individuals. The 3A Region 1 races are scheduled for Saturday, 29 October 2016 at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida.


"We ran it for the first time this year," said Cashin, talking about the Santa Fe course. "It was pretty fast. I had my season best there.


"It's a real tough Region. There will be a lot of guys up there. Matthew Clark from Creekside, for one."

In the boys' race, people were throwing around phrases like "holding back" and "letting up." If there was any talk like that in the girls' race, you didn't hear it from Lincoln's Alyson Churchill.

"The coach doesn't want me to run hard," said Churchill. "But you get out there, and it's a race."


For Churchill, it could have been a time trial. By two kilometers the Lincoln frosh was so far ahead that she was out of sight of the rest of the field.


"I've been working on even mile splits," said Churchill. "I didn't do it today, though."

What she did do was run a winning 18:29, even faster than the 18:47 that she had posted on the same course at the Cougar Cross-Country Challenge back in August. Chiles junior Ana Wallace moved up during the final kilometer of the race to finish second in 20:09. Columbia junior Bridget Morse took third in 20:12.


After Wallace, the Chiles Timberwolves piled four more athletes into the top twelve, with Emily Culley placing fourth in 20:15, Caitlin Wilkey sixth in 20:32, Erin Phelps seventh in 20:33, and Emily Molen twelfth in 20:20. That added up to 31 Timberwolf points and Chiles' fifth 3A District 3 girls' title in the last six years. Behind Alyson Churchill's win, Lincoln scored 55 points to take second. Leon, led by the fifth place 20:20 performance of Katherine Resavage, placed third with 76 points. The fourth place team was the last to advance to the 3A Region 1 championship, and Stanton edged Columbia for that spot, 99 to 101. Columbia athletes Bridget Morse (3rd, 20:12) and Cassandra Pierron (15th, 21:53) advanced to the Region 1 meet as individuals.

At Region, teams and athletes will be fighting for a spot on the starting line at the State Final, slated for Saturday, 5 November 2016, at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida. Alyson Churchill has been running on that course since 2014.


"I like it being here," said Churchill. "It's definitely an advantage."


It's also an advantage to have run 18:07 on that course, as Churchill did three weeks earlier at the FSU Invitational.

Tallahassee schools shine in 3A District 3 Meet at Apalachee Regional Park

East of Tallahassee in Apalachee Regional Park on Saturday morning, 24 October 2015, Chiles High swept the team titles at the FHSAA 3A District 3 cross country meet. The Chiles girls up an unbeatable 27 points in their 5K race as Chiles senior Emma Tucker outkicked Columbia sophomore Bridget Morse for the individual win, 19:49.26 to 19:49.86. In the boys' race Leon junior Matt Cashin took top individual honors with a 16:38. I've written much more about the meet here:

The goal at any District Meet is to qualify for the Region, continuing to move toward the State Final. The Chiles girls did that and more. Led by District champion Emma Tucker, the Timberwolves put up a winning total of 27 points, capturing the District championship and advancing to the 3A Region 1 meet. Chiles' other scorers were senior Alex Wallace (3rd, 20:08), sophomore Ana Wallace (4th, 20:13), sophomore Erin Phelps (9th, 21:08), and frosh Emily Culley (10th, 21:08).


Leon was also among the four teams making the cut for Region. Led by the 20:49 seventh-place finish of frosh Katherine Resavage, the Lions placed third with 75 points. Tallahassee Lincoln senior Julianna Krueger qualified as an individual for the 3A Region 1 championship, finishing eleventh in 21:15.

Tallahassee took the top three spots in the boys' team standings. Chiles, led by the 16:49 third-place performance of senior William Dodson, won the meet with 35 points. Behind the one-two finish of Matt Cashin and senior Adam Wallenfelsz (2nd, 16:46), Leon was second with 42. Lincoln was third with 73 behind their top scorer, sophomore Clayton Carlson (8th, 17:12). Those three teams and fourth-place Stanton (96 points) qualified for Region.

Godin and Hayden prosper on the longer trail at “Tails & Trails”

Since the very first Tails And Trails in 2002 the event has included a 5K. The race had a different name and was in a different month than now, but there was a 5K. In 2006 the race director added a 10K to the program. This year, at the 14th annual Tails And Trails, a half-marathon joined the other races. It wasn't the only 13.1-mile race in Tallahassee. It wasn't even the first trail half-marathon in town. But it was the first Tails And Trails Half Marathon. And it ended with the long climb up from Lake Lafayette to the Tallahassee Animal Services Center that the Tails And Trails races are notorious for.


Eric Godin was the first to finish that climb in the inaugural half marathon, winning the Saturday morning race in 1:25:43. Godin finished over 600 meters ahead of the next finisher, Jonathan Manry of Capital City Runners. Manry's time was 1:28:21. Andy Roberts was the fastest master runner in the long race, placing sixth overall in 1:40:08.


Mary Jane Hayden won the women's title, coming in 13th overall in 1:49:34. April Bentley was the top woman master, finishing fourth in the women's standings and 21st overall in 1:56:07.


92 athletes finished the first Tails And Trails half-marathon.

Unlike the brand-new half-marathon, the Tails And Trails 10K has some history behind it. Part of that history is that Leon High distance runner Matt Cashin won the race in 2014. Cashin repeated that performance in 2015. The sophomore won the 10K again, this time by more than 300 meters in 37:22. FAMU professor Geb Kiros was the top master in the 6.2-mile race, finishing second overall in 38:41. Placing 24th and 25th overall, Brittney Barnes edged Jillian Heddaeus for the women's crown, 46:04 to 46:15. Coming in 45th overall in 59:35, Katie Clark was the top woman master and eighth female finisher.

The 5K remains the dean of the Tails And Trails races, the event that goes back to the first Tails And Trails on 30 March 2002. Finishing more than half a kilometer ahead of the runner-up, Roger Schmidt of Capital City Runners won the 14th Tails And Trails 5K in 17:06. Placing seventh overall in 20:25, Alese Autore was the first woman in the 5K--her fourth Tails And Trail win in the last five years. Bob Asztalos was the first master runner to finish the 3.1-mile race, coming in 13th overall in 21:16. Laura Reina was the first woman master and fifth female finisher, placing 34th overall in 23:32.

Flooding doesn't stop Tails & Trails, Cashin, or Dobersek

Saturday, 3 May 2014, was the date for one of Tallahassee's trail running fixtures, the Animal Shelter Foundation's 13th annual Tails and Trail 10K and 5K runs. Since 2002, the event has given the area's trail-running aficionados the chance to risk tripping over a root while exhausting themselves on the slopes of the ridge bounding the south edge of the Lake Lafayette Basin.


After the previous week's rains there was some concern that the Lafayette Heritage Trails might be impassably muddy. As it turned out, the trails were in decent shape. Upper Lake Lafayette was the problem.


Upper Lake Lafayette usually isn't a lake. That is, it doesn't often have water in it. This was originally the case with the entire Lake Lafayette basin, which was so well-drained by sinkholes and sloughs leading to the St. Marks River that it was called Prairie Lake. The best and shortest route from Chaires to Tallahassee was to drive across the dry lake bed. This changed for some portions of the lake after World War II, when Piney Z Plantation built impoundment dikes to keep water in Piney Z Lake. Upper Lake Lafayette remained a temporary lake, only filled with water when conditions were unusually wet.


The days before the Tails and Trails were unusually wet.


Upper Lake Lafayette filled up. The water backed up into Conner Creek, covering the bridge leading to the Lafayette Heritage Trail. That same bridge was part of the Tails and Trails 10K course. Whatever the condition of the rest of the trail, some key connections were under water.


It is purely coincidental that this was the thirteenth year for the race. You're not afraid of a number, are you?


Rather than issue a snorkel to each runner, the race committee from the Animal Shelter Foundation scrambled to find a new, mostly paved course. The Tails and Trails was saved.


Matthew Cashin had recently finished his freshman-year track season at Leon High, but he wasn't done running this spring. Cashin won the Tails and Trails 10K, covering the modified 6.2-mile course in 37:04. Tallahassee master runner Tony Guillen finished runner-up in 37:57. Urska Dobersek took the women's title, placing 20th overall in 46:12. Beth Culley was the first woman master, coming in 29th overall in 49:00.

The Tails and Trails 5K went to another member of the Leon track team, sophomore Adam Wallenfelsz. Wallenfelsz ran 16:53 to win the shorter race. Sara Lane was the top woman, placing tenth overall in 20:55. A recent alumna of Chiles High School, Lane currently studies at Troy University, where she competes on the cross country and track teams. 13th in the women's standings and 47th overall, Jennifer Gonzalez was the top woman master in the race. Gonzalez ran 26:17.


211 athletes finished the Tails and Trail 10K and another 359 competed the 5K. The race is a benefit for the Animal Shelter Foundation of Tallahassee.

Montford girls and Swift Creek boys take wins home from Fort Braden

After two meetings, the Leon County Schools' 2012 middle school cross-country season is starting to look like a game of musical titles. At the season opener on September 5, the Battle at Tom Brown, Swift Creek won the girls' race, but at the Fort Braden Run on September 12 the top girls' team was Montford. For the boys, defending county champs from Raa took the Battle at Tom Brown, but Swift Creek answered with a victory at Fort Braden. There have been two constants, though. The team competition has been close, and Raa athletes Audrey Dogan and Matthew Cashin continue to be the fastest runners in their races.


The Fort Braden meet commenced at 6:00 PM ET in Fort Braden Community Park with the girls' two-mile race. Raa's Audrey Dogan and the 2011 Fort Braden Run champion, Swift Creek's Zoe Sheldon, led the field out of the park and across a bridge onto the grounds of Fort Braden School. Sheldon set the pace, hitting the half mile in 3:11 and the mile in 6:38. Then Dogan took over, leading the girls through a mile and a half in 10:28. When the runners came back across the bridge and returned to the park, Dogan was still in front and starting to open a gap. Dogan charged through the park to the finish line, recording a 13:58 winning time and becoming the first girl to ever crack 14:00 at the Fort Braden Run. Sheldon finished second in 14:10, just ahead of the 14:14 turned in by Ana Wallace of Deer Lake. The next two places went to Montford runners Caroline Grace Brantley (14:39) and Saige Kemeny (14:56), setting up Montford's team score of 48 points. However, Swift Creek also scored 48. Following NFHS rules, the tie was broken by comparing the sixth runner of each team, and Montford's Kinley Emerson gave her team the decision with a 16:29.

In the boys' race, Raa's Matthew Cashin was the first runner out of the park, already with a respectable lead. By halfway through the race, Etavious Milton of Griffin had moved into second, but wasn't close enough to worry Cashin. Cashin returned to the park to finish with a winning 12:40. Milton ran 12:51 for the runner-up spot, while Fairview's Joseph Jones was third in 12:55. Swift Creek took the next two places, with Stephen Veliz running 13:03 and Shane Suchoki 13:08. The two accounted for the first nine points of Swift Creek's total of 54, good enough for the team title. Montford was disappointed in their ambitions of a sweep of the Fort Braden titles, placing a close second with 60 points. Raa, the victor a week earlier at the Tom Brown meet, was third with 76.
