Ryan Truchelut and Leonardo Canete take it to the wire at the Salute To Prefontaine 5K

On Saturday morning, 23 September 2023, Gulf Winds Track Club's Prefontaine Forest 5K returned to its latest home--Wallwood Boy Scout Reservation near Wetumpka, Florida--for the 46th running of the event. Ryan Truchelut edged master runner Leonardo Canete for the win, both men clocked in 19:17. Brittney Barnes was the top woman in the race, placing ninth overall in 21:41.

Almost 20 miles and the width of Lake Talquin west of Tallahassee, Wallwood is several hundred acres of woodland on the edge of the Ocklochnee River valley. Creeks emptying into the river have carved ravines lined with hardwoods; the 3.1 miles of the Prefontaine Forest 5K took runners in and out of those ravines and even down to the shores of Lake Talquin. The 2023 version of that trek started at 9:00 AM. Leonardo Canete, runner-up in the 2022 Prefontaine, charged to the front. His lead grew until he was too far ahead for the rest of the to see.

"I had lost sight of Leo about a mile and a half," said Ryan Truchelut. "But then, at the out-and-back to the lake, I saw him behind me."

Leonardo Canete

Mid race, where the course made a loop, Canete had gone around the loop an extra time. He wasn't the only athlete to make that wrong turn, but it had still put him behind the other leaders. With a kilometer to go, Canete trailed Brad Busboom and Truchelut by almost twenty seconds. He labored to make up that deficit, overtaking Busboom and then Truchelut.

"Leo caught me at about three miles," said Truchelut. "I stayed with him till 40 yards to go. Any race that I can reduce to a 40-yard dash, I have a chance to win."

The race came down to a sprint to the finish line. Truchelut won that sprint by a fraction of a second, crossing first in 19:17. Canete took second, also in 19:17. Brad Busboom placed third in 19:28.

Brittney Barnes was the first woman in a race for the second time in two weeks. Before her 21:41 win at the Prefontaine, Barnes had led the women's field at the Sickle Cell 5K on 9 September 2023. One of the athletes behind Barnes at the Sickle Cell race was Alexis Mayfield, a runner on the cross-country team at Swift Creek Middle School. Mayfield was second in the women's standings at Prefontaine, placing tenth overall in 22:09. Tallahassee triathlete Stephanie Liles-Weyant was the first woman master and the third female finisher, twentieth overall in 23:55. A past champion of the Pre, Liles-Weyant had won the women's division at the 2006 race.

Droze and McDermott run fast at Run With The Moose

2016 is an election year so you hear a lot about polls. Sample size is an important consideration when discussing public opinion polls. Most presidential preference polls use a sample size of about a thousand. By polling that many people, you get a fairly accurate statistic--within the "3% margin of error" that you see in the fine print accompanying so many poll results. To bring the margin of error down to 2% you'd need to poll many more people--a sample size of about 2500. Smaller sample sizes, on the other hand, will increase your error. Very small samples could give you bizarre results. Quincy, Florida's annual Run With The Moose 5K has only been around for four years, so if you take as your sample the winners of that race, you'd have a tiny sample indeed. You'd also end up concluding that half of all overall winners of road races are women, and that the other half are named Droze.

Gary Droze
Gary Droze

2016 is not only an election year, it was a Droze year. On Saturday morning, 15 October 2016, Gary Droze won the fourth Run With The Moose 5K in 18:16, finishing close to 200 meters ahead of the next runner. Tallahassee school teacher Laura McDermott was the first woman in the race, placing fifth overall in 22:38.

That sample size could have been even smaller. After holding the Run With The Moose each year from 2010 to 2012, the Quincy chapter of the Moose Lodge shelved the race. The Loyal Order of the Moose revived the event after a four-year hiatus, but with a few changes. Instead of a summer run, the race was now in October, a less torrid month. The course was the same, but now it was USATF certified, a guarantee that the athletes would actually be running five kilometers. Improvements? You'd think so. On the other hand, anyone who ran slow couldn't point to the torrid summer weather or speculate that the course was long. The runner had a better event, but they had lost two excellent excuses for poor performance.

Laura McDermott

If you wanted a reason for running less than your best, though, the course still included some huge hills. After starting north on Shelfer Street, the runners turned east onto King Street and plunged into a ravine, a branch of Quincy Creek. After racing to the bottom the athletes had to struggle up the other side of the depression. Late in the race, the runners had to make another trip in and out of the ravine on their way to the finish line. It wasn't a second visit to look forward to.

On the outward journey, Gary Droze, Tallahassee Community College's cross-country coach, was the first one out of the defile. His challenges for the rest of the race didn't come from rival athletes, but from the law enforcement vehicle escorting the runners. Droze kept overtaking that lead car, which wasn't often a comfortable distance ahead.

"The fumes are killing me!" exclaimed Droze.

Paul Guyas

But Coach Droze overcame both hills and hydrocarbons to win the race in 18:16. Tallahassee runner Paul Guyas took second in 19:04, and "Marathon Jack" McDermott was third in 20:10.

"That was tough!" declared Laura McDermott after clearing the final hill on the course.

But that was less than 200 meters from the finish line, at which point it was all over but the cheering. McDermott got the women's title, finishing fifth in 22:38. Monica Judd was the first woman master and second female finisher, seventh overall in 23:59. Tallahassee master runner Paula O'Neill was third in the women's standings and ninth overall in 24:10.

46 athletes completed the 2016 Run With The Moose, not a bad turnout for a race back from the dead after four years. Proceeds of the race went to benefit the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer campaign of the American Cancer Society.

Lagat leads the 2012 Run With The Moose 5K

Carly Thomas and Violah LagatWomen runners have had much to say in the three-year history of the Run With The Moose 5K in Quincy, Florida. Sheryl Rosen was the overall winner of the first Run With The Moose, running 20:52 in 2010. Gary Droze evened the score for the men in 2011 with a 17:57 win. But in this year's race on Saturday morning, 28 July 2012, the women regained the lead in wins, taking the top spot and three of the top four places.

Duane EvansThe race started just after 8:15 AM, and the athletes headed north on Shelfer Street. Just over half a kilometer into the race the runners made a turn onto King Street. Crawfordville master runner Duane Evans was first to that corner, followed by Violah Lagat and Carly Thomas. It was just weeks away from Lagat's second and Thomas's first cross-country season competing for Seminoles Florida State University. On the way to the two-kilometer mark, the runners negotiated the worst of the King Street hills. Evans was still leading, but Lagat and Thomas were closing. The two Seminoles overtook Evans, and then Lagat ran away from everyone. Lagat finished the race with a 500 meter lead, running a new women's record of 18:45 for the hilly Quincy 5K. Thomas finished second overall with a time of 20:50. Evans placed third in 21:16, the first male and the fastest master in the race. Fourth overall at 22:04, Katelyn Kelly was the third female finisher. Sandra Canada was the fourth woman the the first female master; she placed ninth overall in 26:11.

Kaitlyn Kelly
Another constant in the history of the race is the carping about the hills. The hills aren't going away, though, nor are the hosts from the Moose Lodge about to air condition the course. But the runners do get an accurate 5K, a tour of some beautiful Quincy neighborhoods, traffic control from local law enforcement, and an event that benefits Special Olympics. Surely that's worth enduring a few hills.

Droze & Droze rack up Moose 5K wins in Quincy

HillFlorida has the reputation of being flat. It's probably the fault of all the tourist advertising that features photos of white sand beaches, beautiful but innocent of any topographical variation. So runners from out-of-state will regale you with tales of their own hill running, then pause, smile pityingly, and remark, "But of course, you guys don't have any hills do you?" This is especially annoying when the speaker is from Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, or some other region that isn't exactly famed for its mountains.

Gary DrozeNaturally, the first thing you want to do is invite the offender on a run on Old Centerville Road, or some other road through the Red Hills. Or get them to enter one of notoriously hilly races in the Tallahassee area, like the Gulf Wind Track Club 30K, the Springtime 10K, or the Pine Run at Tall Timbers.

Or the Run With The Moose 5K in Quincy.

Only 22 athletes finished the first Run With The Moose in 2010, not many to carry reports home about the course. But as the date of the 2011 race approached, rumors started to fly. "I hear it's hilly." "Is it as hilly as they say it is?" "The course is long." "There's supposed to be a really long climb to the finish."

Vicky DrozeAbout ninety athletes ignored the whispers and showed up for the race on Saturday morning, 23 July 2011. From the starting line on North Shelfer Street, you could see that the first few hundred meters of the race were going to plunge down a slope--a plunge that ended at the foot of a steep climb. So when the starter sent the field loose, everyone had an idea what they were in for, whether or not they had toured the course before the race.

Stephen RobbinsMaclay School cross-country and track coach Gary Droze led the runners off the starting line, but Seth Venable moved to the front during the first kilometer. On the second kilometer, Droze regained the first spot for good, and cruised to a 17:57 victory. Droze was also the first master runner across the finish line. Cairo's Stephen Robbins overtook Venable to finish second in 19:36, while Venable took third in 20:40.

Sandra CanadaVicky Droze of Tallahassee was never challenged for the lead in the women's competition, placing ninth overall in 24:05 to finish as the first woman, over 300 meters ahead of the runner up. Behind Droze, Sandra Canada of Woodville moved up through the field, ultimately passing Jillian Heddaeus of Tallahassee to move into the second women's position. Canada finished the race as the second woman in and the first woman master, twelfth overall in 25:42. At 26:27 and 15th overall, Heddaeus was third among the women.

Seth Venable87 athletes finished the race, a fundraiser for Special Olympics of Gadsden County hosted by Moose Lodge #2672. After the race there was still some talk about the course being long ("3.24 miles." "Six kilometers!"), but my own informal measurement showed that the run was only about thirty meters off of five kilometers. Without a certified course, though, people are always going to speculate about the actual length of the event, especially when runners have times that are slower than they might like. If the times were a bit off at the Run With The Moose, though, you can attribute that to the summer heat and the challenging hills. You can always wait till the cool days of November and find a level or downhill 5K, but most runners take pride in testing themselves on the slopes in July. Well, most runners.

Jillian Heddaeus"If we can do anything next year to make it better," declared the announcer at the awards ceremony, "please let us know!"

"Iron it out!" called someone from the back of the room.

Like I said, most runners.

Rosen outraces the herd at the Run With The Moose 5K

Coming off of a three-month hiatus from local racing, Sheryl Rosen ran 20:52 to win the Run With The Moose 5K in Quincy, Florida on Saturday, 14 August 2010. Rosen crossed the line about 260 meters ahead of runner up Jay Silvanima of Tallahassee. Silvanima edged out third-place runner Matthew Rowan of Quincy for the top master spot, 22:01 to 22:10. Tallahassee's Nancy Stedman was the second woman across the line and the top woman master, placing sixth overall in 24:37.

22 athletes finished the Run With The Moose 5K. The event was produced by the Quincy Lodge of the Loyal Order of the Moose (Lodge #2672) as a benefit for Special Olympics. The race was followed by the Moose Lodge's Family Fun Day.
