Linton turns the fastest Prefontaine time in over three decades

Stanley LintonOn 21 September 2013, a Saturday morning that hinted at a future autumn, Stanley Linton visited one of his favorite training grounds, Tallahassee's Silver Lake. Running in a field of 75 athletes, Linton competed in Gulf Winds Track Club's 38th annual Prefontaine Forest 5K, his fourth time running the event. He ran the 3.1-mile race in 16:27, winning for the second time and improving on his 2012 time by 51 seconds. It was the fastest time at Prefontaine in more than 30 years.


That should be enough numbers to keep a Florida State University math major like Linton happy.


Michael MartinezThere was indeed a promise of fall in the air when the race started at 8:30 AM. Stanley Linton went right to the front, while Michael Martinez, Michael Kennett, and Joshua Dismuke fell into place behind him. Linton lengthened his lead, pulling out of sight during the first and longer of the course's two loops. Behind Linton, Martinez, the 2011 Prefontaine champion, shrugged off Kennett and Dimuke to spend the second loop alone in second place. Meanwhile Paul Guyas had overtaken Michael Kennett to move into third. Those positions held through the second loop, so Linton won in 16:27, master runner Martinez finished runner-up in 19:18, Guyas was third in 20:06, and Kennett took fourth in 20:39.


Melissa GearyLess than two minutes after leaving the starting line, Melissa Geary raced into the woods just four seconds ahead of Melissa Hooke. Geary, a student at the Florida State College of Medicine, continued to lead the women's competition through the first loop, building up a lead of more than half a minute on Hooke. But during the second loop, Hooke started to close the gap. Hooke was still closing when the race ended, but she was also still behind. Geary finished with the women's title, coming in 14th overall in 23:34. Hooke followed, 15th overall in 23:41. Urska Dobersek was the third female finisher, placing 17th overall in 24:14, and fourth on the women's side went to Martha Bademan, 19th overall in 24:46. Fifth in the women's division was the first female master, Nancy Stedman, 26th overall in 25:40.
