Former harriers Elliot and Nackashi win the Blue Light 5K

In the late afternoon of Wednesday, 11 September 2013, Daniel Elliot won the inaugural Blue Light Memorial 5K on the Tallahassee campus of Florida State University. Elliott, formerly a distance runner at Lake Howell High School in Winter Park, Florida, ran 22:14, finishing nearly a minute ahead of the next runner. Master runner David Plack had to fight for that runner-up spot; Plack ran 23:20, finishing less than a second ahead of Nathan Adams (3rd, 23:20) and Chris Pennell (4th, 23:21). The first female finisher was Catherine Nackashi, placing tenth overall in 27:19. Nackashi is an alumna of the distance program of Bishop Kenny High School in Jacksonville, Florida.


Wednesday is an unusual day for a road race, but understandable when that Wednesday is a July 4, or in the case of the Blue Light Memorial 5K, a September 11. The event was hosted by the FSU College of Criminology and Criminal Justice as a fundraiser for the Fallen Officer Memorial, a tribute to those law enforcement officers who have given their lives in the course of duty. 93 athletes completed the race. Finish line and timing services were provided the the Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee.
