Chris O'Kelley and Kat Sack pay some swift respects at the Salute To Prefontaine

Once each year since 1976, Gulf Winds Track Club has brought the Salute To Prefontaine 5K to the Silver Lake Recreation Area of the Apalachicola National Forest, just west of Tallahassee, Florida. The course has changed more than a few times. One year the race was run in October instead of September. The faces of the athletes have changed as well, and on Saturday morning, 15 September 2018, at the 43rd annual Prefontaine there was a new face in front of the race. Chris O'Kelley won the race for the first time, covering the 3.1-mile cross-country course in 18:00. On the women's side, Kat Sack was a first-time winner as well, placing tenth overall in 21:34.

O'Kelley's 18:00 at Prefontaine was the fastest winning time at the race since 2014, when Chris Lake went 17:43. Trailing O'Kelley, Charlie Kline took second in 18:14. Ryan Truchelut, the running meteorologist, edged Brad Busboom for third, 19:21 to 19:26. In fifth place, Simon Hodgson of the Tallahassee Community College cross-country team was just a few steps behind Busboom at 19:29. Hodgson's coach, Gary Droze, was the first master runner in the race, placing sixth overall in 19:38.


To find a faster woman's time at Prefontaine than Sack's, you'd have to go all the way back to 2012, when three-time women's champ Micah Adriani ran the race in 20:58. Tallahassee Community College cross-country runner Genevieve Printiss finished runner-up to Sack in the women's standings, placing fifteenth overall in 22:52. Alyssa Terry held off Brittney Barnes for the third women's spot, 23:02 to 23:07. Terry and Barnes were eighteenth and nineteenth overall. Coming in twentieth overall, Lourena Maxwell was the top woman master and fifth female finisher. Maxwell's time was 23:13.


117 athletes finished the 43rd annual Salute to Prefontaine 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.
