Paul Guyas and Isabel Davis defeat sand, snags, and the competition at the Prefontaine 5K

West of Tallahassee, Florida and just inside the Apalachicola National Forest, there's a spot on the map labeled "Andrew." Perhaps it was a village before the Great Depression. There's not much there now aside from the intersection of Aenon Church Road and Silver Lake Road. There's an Andrew Lake, but that pond is overshadowed by neighboring Silver Lake, where the United States Forestry Service maintains the Silver Lake Recreation Area. Nevertheless, once each year since 1976, on the cusp of autumn the Gulf Winds Track Club visits Andrew for the Salute To Prefontaine Forest 5K. Tallahassee master runner Paul Guyas won the 44th annual Prefontaine 5K on Saturday morning, 30 September 2019, with a 20:36. Isabel Davis, a seventh-grader at Cornerstone Learning Community, won the women's division, placing twelfth overall in 27:15.

The race started at 8:30 AM from the Silver Lake Recreation Area. The runners followed a two-lap course, each lap taking the field around both Silver Lake and Andrew Lake. Midway through the first lap the runners passed through what would have been downtown Andrew, if there ever was such a thing. Williams Springer was setting the pace at this point. An eighth-grader on the cross-country team at Trinity Catholic, Springer led the field up a hill and over a fallen tree in Central Andrew. Paul Guyas was just a step behind, though, and by the second trip through the heart of Andrew, Guyas was 50 meters ahead of Springer and pulling away. When Guyas crossed the finish line in a winning 20:36, his lead had grown to just under 200 meters. Springer was second in 21:22, and Hans Hassell placed third in 22:36.

In the women's competition, Isabel Davis, a member of the Cornerstone Learning girls' cross-country team, was also trailing on the first trip through Andrew. But Davis was the first female athlete through Andrew on the second lap, and her final time of 27:15 put her more than 100 meters ahead of the next woman in the race. Martha Guyas was the women's runner-up and fifteenth overall in 28:00. Marlee Tucker, a sophomore on the Franklin County High girls' cross-country team, placed third in the women's standings and nineteenth overall in 29:12.

57 athletes finished the 2019 Salute To Prefontaine 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.
