Brad Busboom and Lisa Johnson launch the 10K at the Trent

The Trent isn’t a new event. It was first run in 2009 at Roberts Elementary School, northeast of Tallahassee, Florida. But on a chilly Saturday morning, 26 January 2019, the event got a new name and a new race. It also got a new champion when Brad Busboom won the 10K at the tenth annual Trent, covering the new 6.2-mile course in 37:37. Lisa Johnson was the first woman in the race, coming in fifth overall in 40:07.

Shortly after the 8:30 AM start at Roberts Elementary, Myles Gibson, a Donalsonville, Georgia master runner, was leading the 10K. A mile into the race Gibson was still in front as the athletes galloped through the Dublin Downs community, but three Tallahassee men were just a few steps behind him--master runner Tony Guillen, Corey Osgood, and Brad Busboom.

Busboom didn’t stay behind. On the hilly roads of Dublin Downs he took command of the race, ultimately building up a lead of more than a hundred meters. When Busboom crossed the finish line back at the school in a winning 37:37, Gibson and Osgood were still in a fight for second. Their battle went to the final meter of the 10,000-meter race, where Osgood barely beat Gibson, both runners clocked in 38:04. A few seconds later, Guillen finished fourth in 38:19.

From first place to fourth, the top men were spread out over less than 200 meters. The women’s competition wasn’t that close; Lisa Johnson never had to look back. Leading from wire to wire, Johnson was more than a thousand meters ahead of the next woman in the 10K when she crossed the finish line in 40:07. Cecilia Bouaichi was runner-up in the women's standings, placing eleventh overall in 45:01. Nikky Manausa was the third woman and twelfth overall in 45:20. Sarah Samford was the first woman master and ninth female finisher, 28th overall in 51:18.

Lisa Johnson was also the first woman at the Trent in 2014, back when it was called the Red Fox Trot. Corey Osgood had been the overall winner in 2018, by which time the race was called the Trent Trot. Both of those years, as in each of the first nine editions of the race, the distance had been 5K. The 10K was added in 2019 when the event shortened its name to the Trent, but there was still a 5K race at the tenth annual Trent, run concurrently with the longer race.

The two races were also on the same course in the early going. Zach DeVeau, the 5K leader, ran with the fastest 10K runners for the first two kilometers, with master runner Michael Martinez following closely. DeVeau broke contact with Martinez during the second half of the race, going on to win the 5K in 18:25. Martinez took second in 19:01. Jackson Rowe, a seventh-grader on the cross-country team at nearly Montford Middle School, placed third in 19:50.

Kate Chunka was the top woman in the 5K, placing eleventh overall in 23:09. Sixth-grader Sophia Youngberg, another Montford cross-country runner, was second in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 23:18. Rasheda Brumfield was the first woman master and third female finisher in the 5K, fourteenth overall in 23:24.


123 athletes finished the inaugural 10K at the 2019 Trent, and another 229 completed the 5K. 239 finished a one-mile fun run. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed all three races.

From 2009 to 2014 the race was named the Red Fox Trot 5K. In 2015 the name was changed to the Trent Trot. In 2012 the 5K course became USATF certified (FL11132EBM). In 2019 the 10K race was inaugurated on USATF-certified course FL18057TY.

Scharlepp and Chunka navigate the Meridian Run

Beginning in 1824, all land in the territory (and later the state) of Florida was surveyed from the intersection of the Tallahassee Meridian (84° 16′ 37.59″ W) and the Base Parallel (30° 26′ 04.12″ N). This point didn't seem to have any particular significance; it's actually in a spot that was subject to flooding by a local creek, the Saint Augustine Branch. In 1925 a modest monument was erected on the site, but it was sometimes hidden by the tall grass. When Cascades Park was renovated the monument was replaced with an impressive mosaic showing Florida and the locations of the Base Line and Tallahassee Meridian.


For most people in Tallahassee though, daily contact with the Tallahassee Meridian comes in the form of Meridian Road, which roughly traces that line of longitude through most of city. And at 3000 North Meridian Road you'll find North Florida Christian School, which on Saturday morning, 22 April 2017, hosted the fourth annual Meridian Run 10K and 5K.


Zack Scharlepp won the 10K, covering the 6.2-mile course through Tallahassee's hilly northside in 42:14. Jackson Graham finished runner-up in 43:57, and Mark Tombrink took third in 46:47. Michael Kennett was the fastest master runner in the race, placing fourth overall in 46:54.


A few steps behind Kennett, Kate Chunka was the first woman in the 10K, finishing fifth overall in 46:56. North Florida Christian sophomore Mary Gravius was second in the women's standings and sixth overall in 52:10. Holly Gorham was the first woman master and third female finisher, coming in tenth overall in 68:25.

QuanDra Shanks was the overall winner and first woman in the 5K, running 19:02. John Davis was the first man to finish the 3.1-mile race, placing second overall in 19:37.


Alese Autore was second in the 5K women's standings and third overall in 19:46, while Zenia George was the third woman and fourth overall in 19:54. Cricket Wood was the top woman master and fifth female finisher, eighth overall in 24:37.


Preston Reece, a North Florida Christian sophomore, was the second male finisher and sixth overall in 20:21. Darren Seymour was the first master runner in the field and third male finisher, seventh overall in 20:24.

Guyas and Chunka prove the swiftest Trailblazers

Racing through the hilly north side of Tallahassee, Florida, Paul Guyas won DeSoto Trail Elementary School's fourth annual Trailblazer 5K Run For Literacy on Saturday morning, 30 January 2016. Guyas covered the 3.1-mile course in 18:35, finishing more than 400 meters ahead of the next runner. Kate Chunka was the top woman in the race, placing thirteenth overall in 22:15.


Behind Guyas, David Welling and T J Devlieger were in a close race for second, with Welling prevailing 20:18 to 20:22. Placing third, Devlieger was the top master runner in the race.


Layla Thompson and Ella Grace Hodges, each eleven years old, took the next two spots in the women's standings after Chunka. Thompson was 22nd overall in 24:21 and Hodges placed 24th overall in 24:27. Birgit Maier-Katkin was the top woman master and the fourth female finisher in the Trailblazer 5K, coming in 33rd overall in 24:57.


The 2016 Trailblazer 5K was run on a USATF-certified course that started and finished at DeSoto Trail Elementary School. 179 athletes finished the 5K, with another 140 completing a timed one-mile fun run. Chip timing for the Trailblazer Run For Literacy was provided by Gulf Winds Track Club of Tallahassee, Florida.

Rego and Chunka defeat the Dragon Dashers

During the School of Arts and Science's second annual Dragon Dash 5K on Saturday morning, 18 January 2014, the first thing that most of the competitors saw was Chris Rego way out front, steadily pulling away from them. Rego was also the last thing they saw before the finish; he was standing at the line getting their times. Rego, a math teacher at the School of Arts and Science, did double duty that morning as the champion of the 3.1-mile race through Maclay Gardens State Park and as its head timer. I have no word on who timed Rego's 16:40. I'm also waiting to hear who shaved the Spanish Barber.


A kilometer into the race, while Chris Rego was running away from the field, master runners Mike Burns and Brian Hickey were leading the pursuit. Burns eventually shook Hickey, but was overtaken himself by another master runner, Chad Henry, with over a kilometer to go. Henry went on to take the runner-up spot in 21:06, finishing as first master. Burns was third in 21:22.


Brian Hickey ended up fifth in 23:07, because he was also passed by Kate Chunka. Chunka had finished third in the women's standings in the 2013 Dragon Dash, but this year she led the women's field from start to finish, posting a winning 21:59 and finishing fourth overall. Holly McClyman was the second woman finisher, placing ninth overall in 26:12. Third on the women's side belonged to Carmen Samarriba, 12th overall in 27:34. Joyce Edwards was the top master woman in the race, coming in 16th overall in 29:42.
