Alec Munger and Sandra Griffin take the cake at the Bun Run

Bun RunFor distance runners, the mantra in July is, "Get Ready For Cross-Country Season." On Saturday morning, 20 July 2019, Lowndes High rising junior Alec Munger showed that if he isn't ready for cross-country, he is well along in his preparations. That morning, Munger won the tenth annual Break Bread Bun Run 5K in Valdosta, Georgia by more than 300 meters, running 17:51. Valdosta master runner Sandra Griffin was the first woman in the race, placing thirteenth overall in 22:53.

It was Munger's second straight Bun Run win and nearly a minute faster than his winning time in the 2018 race. Fourteen-year-old Aaron Munger took the runner-up spot in the 5K, running 19:03. An incoming frosh at Lowndes High, Aaron will be joining his brother Alec on Viking cross-country team. A few steps behind the younger Munger, a pair of master runners battled for third, Myles Gibson and Ryan Kelly. Kelly, from Lake Park, Georgia, had won the Bun Run in 2013 and 2014, as well as finishing ahead of Gibson in the 2018 race. Kelly had also outrun Gibson a week earlier to win the eleventh annual Barnes 5K. This time out, though, Gibson won their duel. The Donalsonville, Georgia athlete went 19:0-8 to take third place and the top master spot with a 19:08. Kelly was fourth in 19:19.

Alexandra Sayre, a rising senior on the Lowndes High cross-country team, took second in the women's standings and fifteenth overall in 23:14. Sayre had also been the women's runner-up in the 2018 Bun Run. Another rising senior, Valdosta High harrier Katelyn Lancaster, was the third woman and seventeenth overall in 24:43. Master runner Martha Mazurkiewicz, a Lowndes High cross-country coach, was the fourth female finisher and eighteenth overall in 25:00.

76 athletes finished the 2019 Break Bread Bun Run 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Alec Munger rides again at Valdosta's Run For Missions Four Mile

On Saturday morning, 26 January 2019, at the eighth annual Run For Missions, Munger outran Kelly 23:34 to 23:43 to pick up his second title in the four-mile race. Valdosta master runner Sandra Griffin was the first woman in the race, placing ninth overall in 29:03.

Munger and Griffin each make a happy return to Valdosta's Memorial Day 5K

At Valdosta, Georgia's 2017 Memorial Day 5K, neither Alec Munger nor Sandra Griffin cracked the top twenty. Griffin finished the race 22nd and third in the women's standings with a 22:09, while Munger was 24th in 22:28. But at Valdosta's tenth annual Memorial Day 5K on Saturday morning, 28 May 2018, Munger and Griffin were through with middle-of-the-pack running. Munger won the race by well over a hundred meters, running 18:11, and Griffin took the women's title, placing eleventh overall in 21:51.

Munger is a rising sophomore on the Lowndes High cross-country team, with personal bests on the track of 4:51.54 in the 1600 and 10:29.81 in the 3200. Another high school cross-country runner, Berrien County rising junior Morgan Bolmer, took second in the Memorial Day 5K at 18:35.03. Hahira, Georgia athlete Nick Rosatti was third in 18:43. The next four places belonged to Lowndes High cross-country runners, with Gerardo Olivera fourth in 19:12, David Shrier fifth in 19:49, Andrew Caruana sixth in 20:27, and Caleb Starling seventh in 20:33. Rick Mazurkiewicz of Valdosta was the top master runner in the race, placing eighth overall in 20:38.

Sandra Griffin was not only the top woman in the race, the Valdosta runner was also the first woman master in the 5K for a second year in a row. Ali Thornhill of Valdosta was second in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 22:55. Tallahassee, Florida master runner Paula O'Neill was the third woman and sixteenth overall in 23:50. O'Neill had been the fifth woman finisher in the 2017 Memorial Day 5K. Valdosta master runner Martha Mazurkiewicz was the fourth woman and 23rd overall in 25:11, while Tallahassee master runner Debbie Peters was the fifth woman and 27th overall in 25:58.

To the southwest, subtropical storm Alberto was churning in the Gulf of Mexico, but no rain fell on the runners. The race had a new title sponsor in 2018, United Country Real Estate, and a new race director, Rob McGhin. 83 athletes finished the 5K.

Valdosta athletes venture Where The Wild Things Run

Where The Wild Things RunGo west of Valdosta, Georgia, past the ghosts of Troupville, across both the Withlacoochee River and the Little River, to a corner of Brooks County where little but miles of open highway lay between you and the distant town of Moultrie, and that's where you'll find the studios of WAFT radio. That's where the wild things run. Or at least it's where WAFT hosted their cross-country race, the "Where The Wild Things Run" 5K, on Saturday morning, 1 April 2017.

It was a new race on a new course, and Valdosta's Masked Avenger won it by more than half a kilometer, running 19:47. Rob McGhin of Valdosta took the runner-up spot with a 22:16. Quitman, Georgia's Kevin Faucette was the fastest master runner in the race, placing third overall in 23:34.

Valdosta master runner Sandra Griffin was the first woman and fourth overall, finishing close behind McGhin in 23:34. Kristin Cleveland of Hahira, Georgia was second in the women's standings and eighth overall in 27:40. Ansley Harrison of Valdosta was the third female finisher and twelfth overall in 31:22.

33 athletes finished WAFT's inaugural "Where The Wild Things Run" 5K cross-country race. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Sandra Griffin finishes first in the Fall Four

Quitman, Georgia Four Seasons Four Miler SeriesThe race in Quitman, Georgia on Saturday morning, 19 November 2016, was Sandra Griffin's first Four Seasons Four Mile. Being a newcomer was no handicap, though, as Griffin won the Fall Four Mile in 29:05--the fastest time yet by a woman in the Four Seasons series. Quitman master runner David Monds was the overall male winner in 29:18, his third men's title at a Four Seasons race. 25 athletes finished the four mile course.

It was the fourth Four Seasons race for David Monds, who has run every race in the series. That was also the case for Thomasville, Georgia's Gareth Pyle. Pyle was third overall in the Fall Four Mile, at 29:39 the second male finisher. Boston, Georgia master runner Wendy Owens was the women's runner-up and fourth overall in 31:38. The next two places went to two more master runners, with Warren Williford of Grove Town, Georgia fifth in 33:57 and Scott Routsong of Valdosta, Georgia sixth in 34:03. Lauren Will of Tallahassee, Florida took the third women's spot, placing seventh overall in 36:09. Will was the women's champ at the preceding race in the series, the Summer Four Mile.

A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia timed the race and provided finish line services. The Four Seasons Four Mile series is scheduled to be back in 2017, starting with the Winter Four Mile on Saturday morning, 25 February 2017.

Kelly and Griffin Don't Run With Scissors; they just run fast

It's a tradition in the South that funding for public education has never been exactly munificent. Art education in particular is a low priority in the budget. With so little money available for equipment, it's a wonder that a typical art class doesn't consist of little more than shoving 30 or 40 students into a room and then solemnly instructing them, “Don't run with scissors.”

If we had a pair of scissors, that is. Maybe in next year's budget.

Rather than let it get to those straits, Sallas Malone Elementary School in Valdosta, Georgia, has held an annual road race since 2010 to raise funds for its art department--the Don't Run With Scissors 5K. Held near the Ides of March from 2010 to 2014, the sixth annual Run With Scissors 5K moved a month earlier on the calendar to Saturday morning, 14 February 2015.

After a one-year absence from the Run With The Scissors in 2014, Ryan Kelly returned to the race in 2015, running 18:24 and notching his third Scissors win in four years. Dan Butzin took the runner-up spot, clocking 19:35. Upper Marlboro, Maryland, athlete Sandra Griffin was the first woman as well as the fastest master runner in the 5K, placing third overall in 21:10. Randy Maples was the first male master in the race, fifth overall in 21:28.

Overall winners Ryan Kelly and Sandra Griffin each received $200 as an award. More than 200 athletes finished the race. Finish line and timing services were provided by A Course / Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia.
