Roe, Roe rule the race at 'Dosta Dash 10K

The Valdosta, Georgia Junior Service League has a different way of counting these things, but if you accept their tally this was the ninth annual 'Dosta Dash on Saturday morning, 23 March 2013. Since the VJSL got into the road race business in 2004, the race has been an untimed December fun run of indeterminate distance, a December 15K, and (for the last four years) a March 10K. Lowndes High School distance runner Chance Roe took time out from track season to win the latest 10K version of the race, turning a 36:45 for the 6.2 miles. James Taylor of Perry, Florida was the top master, finishing fourth overall in 40:28. Valdosta's Melissa Roe took the women's title, placing 13th overall in 48:20. The first master woman was Martha Mazurkiewicz of Valdosta, 22nd overall in 49:42.

Chance Roe led the race early, with Valdosta Middle School cross-country coach Ryan Kelly following in his wake. Roe relinquished the lead to Kelly briefly around the halfway point, but then surged ahead again for good--the gap between the two runners varied but never vanished. At the finish line it was Roe over Kelly, 36:45 to 37:02. Another Lowndes High distance man, junior Tyler Thurman, was third in 38:43. Master runner James Taylor took fourth in 40:51. In fifth just behind Taylor was another Perry master runner, Dan Anderson, running 40:51.

Almost twelve minutes after Chance Roe was the first runner across the Dosta Dash finish line, the first female finisher came across as well. That just happened to be Pine Grove Middle School's Viking Runners Club coach Melissa Roe, and Chance Roe just happened to be her son. Melissa Roe outran the second woman in the 10K, Heather Addington, 48:20 to 48:43. Viking Running Club member Katelin Stecz was the third female finisher, taking 17th overall in 49:06.

In 2004 and 2005 the event was an untimed December fun run named the
Jingle Bell Run.

From 2006 to 2008 the event was called the Jingle Bell Classic.
In 2010 the VJSL moved the race to March, renaming it the 'Dosta Dash.
