Expedition to the Chiles Championship Mile

"Are you going to the track meet at Chiles?" asked the Coach.

"I'm not sure," I said. "I'm going to be at the Thomasville Road Baptist Church 10K in the morning."

"The 1600 is at 11:00 or 11:30," said the Coach.

"I'll be there."

Boys 1600 startWhat can I say? I'm a sucker for the Mile. Even when they knock 934 centimeters off of it and call it a 1600, I still can't think of the event without getting visions of Roger Bannister, Derek Ibbotson, Jim Ryun, Steve Ovett, and the rest of the pantheon of deities known as Milers. At the Chiles Championships on 2 March 2013 there would be no less than four 1600-meter races, close enough approximations to an actual mile--two sections of high school girls and two sections of high school boys. I'm sure that many other fine events were contested, but I am a Mile junkie and I was only there to get my fix.

When I got to the track there was a fierce wind blowing; the flag was stretched out full length, threatening to break loose and fly away. Clearly there wouldn't be any fast times, but there could still be some good racing.

Girls 1600Chiles' Rachel Givens quickly put an end to that hope in the girls' 1600. Givens, the 2012 FHSAA-3A cross-country champion, immediately took charge of the race. By the end of the first lap it was clear that the only race would be for second place. For three laps it looked like the runner-up spot would belong to Ericka Taylor of Westover, but on the backstretch of the final lap Taylor was overtaken by a group of three runners--Autumn Wable of Leon, Ashton McMurray of Chiles, and Sara Lane of Chiles. While Givens galloped home in 5:23.74, Wable, McMurray, and Lane fought to settle the question of second place. It was a tight battle all the way to the finish, but Wable took second in 5:45.07, McMurray third in 5:45.35, and Lane fourth in 5:46.99.

Boys 1600Lincoln's Trevor Touchton led the boys' field around the track for the first lap, but in contrast to Givens, he had almost the entire field breathing on the back of his neck. Touchton started to fade on the second lap, and Sukhi Khosla of Leon took over the pacemaking. Khosla struggled with the wind though, which seemed to bat him around on the backstretch. On the third lap Lincoln's Joseph Garcia grabbed the lead from Khosla, then headed for the gun lap. Garcia built a gap as Khosla and Will Spiers of Chiles gave chase. Garcia swung into the homestretch with the race well in hand, followed by Khosla. Spiers was next, challenged by his teammate, Avery Bartlett. Garcia crossed the line in first at 4:36.64; Khosla took second in 4:41.29. Spiers held off Bartlett for third, 4:42.52 to 4:42.81.
