They told Ryan Kelly not to run with scissors, but no one told him not to run fast. So the Valdosta Middle School cross-country coach raced through 3.1 miles in 18:09 to win the fourth annual Don't Run With Scissors 5K on Saturday morning, 16 March 2013. It was Kelly's second straight win at the race, which started and finished near the host school, Sallas Mahone Elementary. Not far off Coach Kelly's pace, St John School distance runner Matthew Baun finished second in 18:24. Valdosta master runner Rick Mazurkiewicz was third in 20:17.The first two female finishers were ten-year-old Kelsey Morse, tenth overall in 22:19, and ten-year-old Eryn Wilkey, eleventh overall in 22:38. Both athletes compete for Valdosta's Viking Runners Club. Sylvia Ellis was the top female master in the race, running 24:38 to finish 27th overall as the sixth woman.
285 athletes finished the race, which benefits the art programs of Sallas Mahone Elementary School.
