Rees Williams and his chums go to Gainesville

Leon High School
Leon High School of the 1920s (State Archives of Florida)

High school athletes with one or more track and field seasons in their history know how difficult it is to get to State. Of course, we're talking about qualifying for the State Championship Meet. But once upon a time, in the days before easy travel, getting to State was difficult in that transportation wasn't a simple problem. In 1920, the trip to the State Champtionship Track Meet in Gainesville, Florida from Tallahassee was an adventure--such an adventure, that one Leon High School student felt compelled to write about it for the school newspaper, The Hill Top. The article ran on 30 April 1920, less than two weeks after State. The day of their departure, 16 April 1920, this short notice ran in The Hill Top:

The track team left today to attend the State High School track meet at Gainesville. We just know they are going to come back with honors and Leon High will be proud of them.

Those going were: Rees Williams, Alton Towles, Orion Parker, Burton Williams.

Now that we know the names of the players, here is what one of them wrote about their trip to State.

"Rees Williams Wins Ribbon At Track Meet"

We left for Gainesville about four-thirty on Friday morning [April] the sixteenth (a long time before daylight it seemed to us).

The Quincy track team was also on its way to the "meet," so we had companions that we were acquainted with even if they were rivals. As soon as we were well started we composed ourselves as best we could to sleep a little, tho not much. We changed cars at Lake City about 9 o'clock and had breakfast there.

Robert Parker, in ordering breakfast at the cafe, ordered, among other things, two eggs which were listed on the bill of fare as "two eggs, any style, 20 cents." So when asked by the waiter whether he wanted them fried on one side or both, Robert insisted that he wanted them "any style," just as they were listed.

After changing cars twice more we arrived at Gainesville about 1 o'clock. We were met at the depot by some autos which took us to the hotel where we were to stay while in the city. Some of us were to stay at the College dormitories and some in private homes.

Saturday morning came with a promise of a fair day. We were certainly glad, because the track was wet and slippery from Friday's rains. The preliminaries of 100 and 200-yard dashes and also the hurdles were run off Saturday morning and then we stopped for the noon hour.

Finals to all the events were to come off that afternoon, so of course there was a great deal of excitement. The grand stand was packed with a crowd from different schools cheering for their favorites.

The boys taking part in the different events outwardly appeared as calm as usual, but the air was charged with a nervous tension, especially to those who were waiting for their events to come off.

The high jump and broad were over with, the mile and half-mile had been run, and still our team had no points.

We were feeling rather badly, but we still had one hope yet--that of Rees in the pole vault--and we certainly were not disappointed even when he tied with another boy for fourth place at nine feet. But we were greatly relieved to see him clear the bar at nine feet two and to see his opponent fall.

The medals and blue ribbons were awarded that night at nine-thirty. We left next morning at six, and again stopped at Lake City for breakfast, and speaking of eating, you ought to have seen us then, because it was late and we were surely hungry.

On the trip back we again had the Quincy boys for company and with some friendly scraps and tricks played on each other, we arrived here about 330, and whether you believe it or not, Tallahassee sure looked good to us.

Travel seems to have been by train. The trip to the meet took eight-and-a-half hours, so the average speed was somewhere in the range of 15-20 mph. By comparison, today's school buses seem marvelously swift.

Florida's State Meet goes back to 1915 and possibly earlier. The FHSAA wasn't founded till 1920 (Leon High was a charter member), so this was either the last non-FHSAA State Meet or the first FHSAA State Meet. There would be another 55 years before FHSAA sanctioned a girls' State Meet, although the Florida State College for Women hosted a state championship track meet for high school girls for several years during the 1920s. 1920, by the way, was the first year of publication for The Hill Top. No byline appears on the article, but Rees Williams (c/o 1921) was the circulation manager of The Hill Top. Draw your own conclusions.

Rees Williams had placed in the pole vault. It wouldn't be until 1922, two years later, that a Tallahassee athlete won an event at the State Meet. That year, Clifford Blitch of Leon (c/o 1922) won the 100-yard dash in 10.2--the State Meet record at the time. In 1927, Billy Chittenden of Leon (c/o 1927) won a State title in the pole vault, Rees Williams' event, going 10' 9-3/4", while also winning the high jump in 5' 10".

Since 1920, Tallahassee athletes have run faster, jumped higher, thrown and jumped farther. Neverthless, they are all following in the footsteps of Williams, Towles, Parker, and Williams.

A fast Breakfast for Jonah Blay and Katie Sherron at the Gulf Winds Track Club Mile

In spite of its name, Gulf Winds Track Club mostly organizes road races, with a few cross-country and trail events thrown in. Among those, a one-mile run is usually an appendage or afterthought--the one-mile fun run at the Tallahassee Turkey Trot, or the one-mile kid's race at the Springtime Road Race. But once a year, the Tallahassee, Florida club returns to the track for the Gulf Winds Track Club Mile at the Breakfast On The Track--a showcase for that venerable 5,280-foot event of frantic distance running. The 26th running of the GWTC Mile was Saturday morning, 10 August 2024 on the Maclay School track.

Jonah Blay won the 26th annual four lapper, covering the mile in 4:47.24. Master runner Katie Sherron was the first woman in the mile for the fourth year in a row, placing ninth overall in 5:07.50.

When you have more than a hundred athletes who want to run a one-mile race on the track, you can't just line them all up and fire the starting pistol. Instead, you have to run the race in sections. Of the six sections of the mile at the Breakfast On The Track, the first section was the fastest. Jonah Blay, an alum of the Chile High Timberwolf cross-country team, was in that section. Blay hadn't run the GWTC Mile since 2019, the year before he started running for the Timberwolves. Nevertheless, he took command of the race right away, well ahead by the end of the first lap, where he was on schedule to break 4:40. Blay didn't maintain that pace, but he didn't need to. Never challenged, Blay was 40 meters ahead when he crossed the finish line in a winning 4:47.24.

Jeremy Collier, a junior-year harrier on the Community Christian School cross-country team, took second behind Blay in 4:54.56. Gabe Sivyer, another junior year high school cross-country runner, was third in 4:57.75. Leonardo Canete was the first master runner in the mile, placing seventh overall in 5:02.25.

Katie Sherron

There were three woman in the first section of the mile, but only one of them had five previous Breakfast On The Track wins--defending champ Katie Sherron. Nearly from the start, Sherron was ahead of her female rivals in the section, Madeleine Frank and master runner Megan Noonan. After four laps and 5:07.50 she had her sixth Gulf Winds Track Mile women's title. Sherron also has three of the ten fastest times by a woman at the GTWC Mile.

Madeleine Frank was the women's runner-up, placing twelfth overall in 5:17.25. Racing in the second section, Charlotte Sikes, an eighth-grader on the Swift Creek Middle School cross-country team, took third in the women's standings with a 5:36.26, good for 21st overall.

Grayton Smith and Katie Sherron grab a win with their pancakes at Breakfast On The Track

The 25th annual Gulf Winds Track Club Mile at the Breakfast On The Track was scheduled to start at the Maclay School Track in Tallahassee, Florida at 7:45 AM on Saturday morning, 5 August 2023.

At 7:30 AM it started to rain.

There was a hurried announcement that the race would proceed as scheduled regardless of weather, and it did. On a wet track, Grayton Smith ran 4:53.46 to take first. Master runner Dr. Katie Sherron was the first woman in the race, placing fourth overall in 5:06.88.

The Breakfast On The Track is a track meet featuring one event--the mile. There were six sections of that race; the overall winners both ran in the first section. Grayton Smith finished the first lap of that section in the lead, with Jarod Hoffman a few steps back. After two laps, Hoffman was a few more steps back. By the end of the third lap, Smith had a fifty-meter lead. Hoffman didn't give up any more ground on the fourth and final lap, nor did he gain any. Smith crossed the line fifty meters ahead in a winning 4:53.46, the only athlete to break 5:00 that morning. Hoffman was runner-up in 5:01.79. Zach DeVeau was third in 5:04.44.

DeVeau happens to be married to the fourth-place finisher, women's champ Katie Sherron. That wasn't unnoticed by Sherron.

"I ran 5:07, a second slower than last year," said Sherron. "And Zach beat me. He's been training for a month, saying, 'I'm going to beat you, I'm going to beat you.'"

Aside from the family drama, Sherron was the first woman in the Gulf Winds Track Club Mile for the third year in a row, and her 5:06.88 was the eighth-fastest time ever run by a woman at the Breakfast On The Track.

Swift Creek Middle School seventh-grader Charlotte Sikes took second in the women's standings, placing sixteenth overall in 5:34.78--a twenty-second improvement on her performance in the 2022 Gulf Winds Track Club Mile. Racing in the second section, Megan Noonan edged Emma-Claire Tanenbaum for the third women's spot, 6:02.34 to 6:02.97. Noonan was 30th overall and Tanenbaum 31st.

Tallahassee area track meets in 2023

2023 Tallahassee Area Track & Field Schedule

2022 Midde School track & field action at Leon High

Here's a list of track meets in the Tallahassee area during the upcoming 2023 outdoor season. These are mostly limited to middle school, high school, and college events, so you won't see any all-comers meets here, or exotics like the Breakfast On The Track. I've also limited the list to Leon County and its immediate neighbors. There are more than 30 meets listed here, and I may have missed a few. That's still more than any fan can possibly attend, but you should try to make it to a few. If you know of an event that I haven't listed, please let me know and I'll add it. I may even go watch.

Stan Linton and Katie Sherron grab more GWTC Mile titles at the Breakfast On The Track

Sebastian Coe, head of World Athletics, is a citizen of the United Kingdom, the nation from which hailed Dr. Roger Bannister, the first man under 4:00 for the mile. Lord Coe himself held the world record in the mile from three times from 1979 to 1985, ultimately running 3:47.33. In spite of this, at the World Athletics Championships in July 2022, there was no mile run. Nor was there a mile run in August 2022 at the Commonwealth Games, hosted in Birmingham, England, UK--the homeland of Bannister, Coe, and the mile.

But you could have seen support for the grand old event if you were north of Tallahassee, Florida at the Maclay School track on Saturday morning, 6 August 2022. There the Gulf Winds Track Club was hosting the 24th annual Breakfast On The Track--a track meet where the only event is the mile. Stan Linton won the Gulf Winds Track Club Mile there that morning, running 4:25.02. Dr. Katie Sherron successfully defended her 2021 women's title at the event, placing eighth overall in 5:06.00

There were seven sections of the mile that morning, with the first and fastest starting at 7:45. Tallahassee master runner Charlie Johnson was one of the athletes competing in the first section; Johnson had won the race in 2017 with a 4:32. Another past champion, Ryan Truchelut, was also on the starting line. Truchelut had won the 2021 Gulf Winds Track Club Mile, running 4:46.27. Linton had taken first in the 2016 race, chasing down Matt Mizereck on the homestretch after trailing most of the way.

Linton wasn't going to be coming from behind in 2022, though. The starting gun fired, and he was out front. Continuing to lead, Linton came through three-quarters at about 3:20. Unchallenged, he hastened home in 4:25.03. Charlie Johnson was second in 4:42.77, the fastest mark ever by a master runner at the Breakfast On The Track. Chris O'Kelley took third in 4:53.27 and Brad Busboom fourth in 4:58.93.

Linton's time was more than a five-second improvement on his winning time in 2016, and the third-fastest mark ever recorded in 24 years of the Breakfast On The Track.

"I was happy to do this with marathon legs," said Linton. "I've been training for a marathon in two-and-a-half months."

Linton is aiming for the Columbus (Ohio) Marathon on Sunday, 16 October 2022. And in the more immediate future?

"I'm heading down to Saint George Island to run the Sizzler 5K this evening," said Linton. "Try and get the double."

Elyse Gallegos

Katie Sherron also ran in the first section. The other women in the race ran in later sections, but if they had been in Sherron's section, they would have trailed her by more than 220 yards--her 5:06.00 was that much faster. It was also the fastest time ever run by a female master runner at the Breakfast On The Track."

"It was good!" said Sherron. "That was like a ten-second PR!"

Certainly it was faster than the 5:17.98 Sherron ran to win the women's title in 2015, her winning 5:16 in 2017, and her 5:17.28 win in 2021.

Charlotte Sikes

Racing well out in front of the third section of the mile, Elyse Gallegos went 5:53.17, good for second in the women's standings and 25th overall. It was just a trifle faster than the 5:54.49 that eleven-year-old Charlotte Sikes ran in section two, putting Sikes third in the women's standings and 26th overall. Behind Sikes in the second section, Savannah Stanley went 6:01.24, making her the fourth female and 29th overall. Stanley is an eighth-grader on the Montford Middle School cross-country team.

146 athletes finished the 2022 Gulf Winds Track Club Mile at the Breakfast on the Track. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.

Riley Hough first, Pat Koon fifth in the boys' 5,000 at New Balance Nationals

Like most athletics tracks, the University of Pennsylvania oval at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is 400 meters long. Unlike most tracks, it's only 400 meters long in lane four. These odd dimensions haven't prevented Franklin Field from hosting the annual Penn Relays or, on 16-19 June 2022, the New Balance Nationals. Hartland High senior Riley Hough won the boys' 5,000 during the Thursday evening, 16 June 2022, session of the meet, throwing down a sub-60 last lap to outkick Hunter Jones, a Benzie Central junior, 14:21.81 to 14:22.57. Seniors dominated the field, Nine of the athletes in the field of eighteen were seniors, seven juniors. The remaining two were sophomores. The fastest of that pair was Pat Koon of Leon High, who took fifth in 14:40.21.

It was Patrick Koon's first time racing 5,000 meters on the track, and probably for most of the rest of the field as well. Although 5,000 is a typical distance for high school cross-country races in the United States, high school events longer than 3200 meters are unusual. In the New Balance Nationals race, Koon was tucked into the lead group for 3,400 meters. Then, with four laps to go, Riley Hough picked up the pace. Koon slowed. The sophomore was out of contact by the time Hough and Jones had begun their bell-lap duel.

Koon wasn't the only Tallahassee distance runner to appear in the NBN boys' 5000. As a Leon senior, Matt Mizereck won the race in 20210, running 14:37.19. Another Leon senior, Ben McMahon ran 15:40.75 at NBN in 2012, placing 30th. Chiles senior Carly Thomas raced the girls' 5000 at NBN in 2012, placing 22nd in 18:20.96.

The seniors in the field won't be back for the 2023 high school track and field season; in fact, they've already graduated. Only the two sophomores, including Koon, could still be doing high school races in 2024. Nothing is given, but the Leon sophomore could have a bright future ahead.

Leon County School 2022 Middle School Track and Field season--five weeks of winners

Leon County Schools' 2022 middle school track and field season went from 13 April 2022 to 11 May 2022. The season included five Wednesday evening meetings--the Trojan Invitational at Lincoln High School on 13 April 2022, the Cougar Invitational at Godby High on 20 April 2022, the Lion Invitational at Leon High on 27 April 2022, the Raider Invitational at Rickards High on 4 May 2022, and the Leon County Schools League Championship Meet on 11 May 2022. A sixth meeting, the Timberwolf Relays at Chiles High on 6 April 2022, was canceled due to inclement weather.

Boys' 1600 at the Lion Invitational

Five meets with eleven events in each meet and many athletes in each event is a lot of athletics. As a summary of the season, I've included a table of event winners below. It's unfortunately dry. You will find the name of each winner, their performance, and their school affiliation. You won't see victory eked out by a lean at the finish line, an improvement of a few inches for a season-best jump, an anchor runner coming back from a flawed baton exchange to capture a relay win for his team, or any of the drama that regularly happens on the track. For that, you have to actually be at the meet. Make plans to attend in 2023!
