Stan Linton and Katie Sherron grab more GWTC Mile titles at the Breakfast On The Track

Sebastian Coe, head of World Athletics, is a citizen of the United Kingdom, the nation from which hailed Dr. Roger Bannister, the first man under 4:00 for the mile. Lord Coe himself held the world record in the mile from three times from 1979 to 1985, ultimately running 3:47.33. In spite of this, at the World Athletics Championships in July 2022, there was no mile run. Nor was there a mile run in August 2022 at the Commonwealth Games, hosted in Birmingham, England, UK--the homeland of Bannister, Coe, and the mile.

But you could have seen support for the grand old event if you were north of Tallahassee, Florida at the Maclay School track on Saturday morning, 6 August 2022. There the Gulf Winds Track Club was hosting the 24th annual Breakfast On The Track--a track meet where the only event is the mile. Stan Linton won the Gulf Winds Track Club Mile there that morning, running 4:25.02. Dr. Katie Sherron successfully defended her 2021 women's title at the event, placing eighth overall in 5:06.00

There were seven sections of the mile that morning, with the first and fastest starting at 7:45. Tallahassee master runner Charlie Johnson was one of the athletes competing in the first section; Johnson had won the race in 2017 with a 4:32. Another past champion, Ryan Truchelut, was also on the starting line. Truchelut had won the 2021 Gulf Winds Track Club Mile, running 4:46.27. Linton had taken first in the 2016 race, chasing down Matt Mizereck on the homestretch after trailing most of the way.

Linton wasn't going to be coming from behind in 2022, though. The starting gun fired, and he was out front. Continuing to lead, Linton came through three-quarters at about 3:20. Unchallenged, he hastened home in 4:25.03. Charlie Johnson was second in 4:42.77, the fastest mark ever by a master runner at the Breakfast On The Track. Chris O'Kelley took third in 4:53.27 and Brad Busboom fourth in 4:58.93.

Linton's time was more than a five-second improvement on his winning time in 2016, and the third-fastest mark ever recorded in 24 years of the Breakfast On The Track.

"I was happy to do this with marathon legs," said Linton. "I've been training for a marathon in two-and-a-half months."

Linton is aiming for the Columbus (Ohio) Marathon on Sunday, 16 October 2022. And in the more immediate future?

"I'm heading down to Saint George Island to run the Sizzler 5K this evening," said Linton. "Try and get the double."

Katie Sherron also ran in the first section. The other women in the race ran in later sections, but if they had been in Sherron's section, they would have trailed her by more than 220 yards--her 5:06.00 was that much faster. It was also the fastest time ever run by a female master runner at the Breakfast On The Track."

"It was good!" said Sherron. "That was like a ten-second PR!"

Certainly it was faster than the 5:17.98 Sherron ran to win the women's title in 2015, her winning 5:16 in 2017, and her 5:17.28 win in 2021.

Racing well out in front of the third section of the mile, Elyse Gallegos went 5:53.17, good for second in the women's standings and 25th overall. It was just a trifle faster than the 5:54.49 that eleven-year-old Charlotte Sikes ran in section two, putting Sikes third in the women's standings and 26th overall. Behind Sikes in the second section, Savannah Stanley went 6:01.24, making her the fourth female and 29th overall. Stanley is an eighth-grader on the Montford Middle School cross-country team.

146 athletes finished the 2022 Gulf Winds Track Club Mile at the Breakfast on the Track. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the race.
