Leonardo Canete and Ann Centner seize Springtime

From 1976 to 2024, Gulf Winds Track Club has held the Springtime Road Race 47 times. That history has provided athletes ample opportunity to run the Tallahassee, Florida event multiple times. Master runner Leonardo Canete was racing his second Springtime 10K on Saturday morning, 6 April 2024; he won the Tallahassee classic in 35:49. That same morning, Ann Centner was racing her sixth Springtime. She took the women's title, her third, placing third overall in 36:44.

The start was delayed for a few minutes, but at 8:05 AM the race was on, with the athletes charging north on Suwannee Street. Leonardo Canete may not have been first off the line, but a few meters down the road he was clearly ahead. Another Tallahassee master runner, Charlie Johnson, was a few steps behind Canete. Two kilometers into the race, Canete and Johnson were racing one-two, just seconds apart. Then the race turned into Myers Park.


In the Myers Park hills, Canete built up a significant lead on Johnson, getting 80 meters ahead by the halfway point. Canete continued to move away during the second half. When he crossed the finish line back on Suwannee Street in a winning 35:49, Canete had a 200-meter lead. Johnson was second in 36:30. Matthew Lammens was the third male finisher, fourth overall in 37:09.

Ann Centner

Almost half a minute earlier, women's champ Ann Centner had already crossed the finish line in 36:44. Centner had been the top woman at two previous Springtimes, 2019 and 2022. 2022 had been a hard-fought, close affair, with Centner prevailing late in the race over Katie Sherron, the Springtime women's winner in 2018. Centner kept 2025 drama-free, leading the women's field early then pulling away steadily, ultimately coming in 400 meters ahead of her closest rival.


Katie Sherron was the top woman master and the women's runner-up, placing eighth overall in 38:18. Tallahassee master runner Stephanie Liles-Weyant was the third female finisher, seventeenth overall in 40:48.

The Springtime 5K, part of the event since 2008, started at the same time as the 10K. Christian Minor won the shorter race by almost 200 meters, running 17:48. Elyse Gallegos was the first woman in the 5K, placing sixth overall in 20:04.

Behind Minor, Ryan Truchelut held off Kyle Olson for second in the men's division, 18:29 to 18:33. Fanxiu Zhu was the first master runner in the race, the sixth male finisher and seventh overall in 20:21.


Eleven-year-old Acadia Hassell took second in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 21:20. Amelia Bryant was the third woman and twentieth overall in 21:58. The top woman master was Vicky Droze, at 22:34 the fifth woman and 27th overall.

534 athletes finished the 2025 Springtime 10K; another 714 completed the 5K. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the races.

Andrew Steinbrink and Elyse Gallegos make many right turns to win the Nene Fest 5K

Because of COVID-19, it took three years after the sixth annual Nene Fest 5K for the seventh Nene Fest 5K to return to the streets of Tallahassee, Florida. Return it did, though, and on Saturday morning, 30 April 2022 athletes raced through Indianhead Acres. Andrew Steinbrink took first with a 19:30, while Elyse Gallegos was the top woman, placing second overall in 22:14.

The 2022 event featured a gimmick--athletes could choose which direction to run the course, either counter-clockwise (as in years past) or clockwise. Aside from difficulties with marking the course, traffic control, and runners on collision courses at mid-race, this could also add some mystery to the competition--am I really leading, or is someone running in the opposite direction ahead of me?


There wasn't much mystery as it turned out, because eleven of the top twelve athletes chose the clockwise course, including the winner, Andrew Steinbrink. His nearest competitors may have been running on the same course as Steinbrink, but he was still so far ahead as to be out of their sight for most of the race. His winning 19:30 put him across the finish line 700 meters in front of the next man in the race.


Sean McConnell finished second in the men's standings and third overall in 22:38. Eleven-year-old Chase Sims was third in the men's division and fifth overall in 23:31. Michael Kennett was the top master runner and fourth male finisher, seventh overall in 23:49.

Elyse Gallegos didn't have the kind of lead in the women's competition that Steinbrink had in the men's race, but her 22:14 still put her well over a hundred meters ahead of her rivals. Oh, and she was pushing a stroller.


Monica Toth was the second woman in the race and fourth overall in 23:00. Cate Rozier, a junior on the Leon High cross-country team, was third in the women's division and sixth overall in 23:31. Loranne Ausley was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, eighth overall in 24:50. Ausley was also the first runner to finish the counter-clockwise course that morning.


46 athletes finished the 2022 Nene Fest 5K.

Ben Wise and Elyse Gallegos put in some fast Miles For Meridian

I'm willing to argue that the Tioga Town Center, west of Gainesville, Florida, should be called the Tioga Running Center. Every time I look at the road-racing schedule for the Gainesville area, it seems like there is at least one more event starting there. For instance, there was the inaugural Miles For Meridian 5K, with a start and finish at the Tioga Town Center on Saturday morning, 16 March 2019. Gainesville master runner Ben Wise won that 3.1-mile race by over 200 meters, running 17:58. Elyse Gallegos, a Gainesville Ironman triathlete, was the first woman in the race, placing fifth overall in 21:55.


Geir Stormark was the second runner to finish the winding course through the suburban streets of Tioga, running 18:47. Gainesville's Tim Kwiatkowski was third in 21:32, just ahead of the 21:38 posted by fourth-place Landon Turley, an eleven-year-old athlete from Newberry, Florida.


Sandy Flory of Gainesville was the first woman master and second female finisher, seventh overall in 23:17. Gainesville athlete Mackenzie Caquatto took third in the women's standings and twelfth overall in 24:13.


243 athletes finished the inaugural Miles For Meridian 5K. Proceeds of the event went to benefit Meridian Behavioral Healthcare, Inc. Start 2 Finish Race Management chip-timed the 5K.
