Rees Williams and his chums go to Gainesville

Leon High School
Leon High School of the 1920s (State Archives of Florida)

High school athletes with one or more track and field seasons in their history know how difficult it is to get to State. Of course, we're talking about qualifying for the State Championship Meet. But once upon a time, in the days before easy travel, getting to State was difficult in that transportation wasn't a simple problem. In 1920, the trip to the State Champtionship Track Meet in Gainesville, Florida from Tallahassee was an adventure--such an adventure, that one Leon High School student felt compelled to write about it for the school newspaper, The Hill Top. The article ran on 30 April 1920, less than two weeks after State. The day of their departure, 16 April 1920, this short notice ran in The Hill Top:

The track team left today to attend the State High School track meet at Gainesville. We just know they are going to come back with honors and Leon High will be proud of them.

Those going were: Rees Williams, Alton Towles, Orion Parker, Burton Williams.

Now that we know the names of the players, here is what one of them wrote about their trip to State.

"Rees Williams Wins Ribbon At Track Meet"

We left for Gainesville about four-thirty on Friday morning [April] the sixteenth (a long time before daylight it seemed to us).

The Quincy track team was also on its way to the "meet," so we had companions that we were acquainted with even if they were rivals. As soon as we were well started we composed ourselves as best we could to sleep a little, tho not much. We changed cars at Lake City about 9 o'clock and had breakfast there.

Robert Parker, in ordering breakfast at the cafe, ordered, among other things, two eggs which were listed on the bill of fare as "two eggs, any style, 20 cents." So when asked by the waiter whether he wanted them fried on one side or both, Robert insisted that he wanted them "any style," just as they were listed.

After changing cars twice more we arrived at Gainesville about 1 o'clock. We were met at the depot by some autos which took us to the hotel where we were to stay while in the city. Some of us were to stay at the College dormitories and some in private homes.

Saturday morning came with a promise of a fair day. We were certainly glad, because the track was wet and slippery from Friday's rains. The preliminaries of 100 and 200-yard dashes and also the hurdles were run off Saturday morning and then we stopped for the noon hour.

Finals to all the events were to come off that afternoon, so of course there was a great deal of excitement. The grand stand was packed with a crowd from different schools cheering for their favorites.

The boys taking part in the different events outwardly appeared as calm as usual, but the air was charged with a nervous tension, especially to those who were waiting for their events to come off.

The high jump and broad were over with, the mile and half-mile had been run, and still our team had no points.

We were feeling rather badly, but we still had one hope yet--that of Rees in the pole vault--and we certainly were not disappointed even when he tied with another boy for fourth place at nine feet. But we were greatly relieved to see him clear the bar at nine feet two and to see his opponent fall.

The medals and blue ribbons were awarded that night at nine-thirty. We left next morning at six, and again stopped at Lake City for breakfast, and speaking of eating, you ought to have seen us then, because it was late and we were surely hungry.

On the trip back we again had the Quincy boys for company and with some friendly scraps and tricks played on each other, we arrived here about 330, and whether you believe it or not, Tallahassee sure looked good to us.

Travel seems to have been by train. The trip to the meet took eight-and-a-half hours, so the average speed was somewhere in the range of 15-20 mph. By comparison, today's school buses seem marvelously swift.

Florida's State Meet goes back to 1915 and possibly earlier. The FHSAA wasn't founded till 1920 (Leon High was a charter member), so this was either the last non-FHSAA State Meet or the first FHSAA State Meet. There would be another 55 years before FHSAA sanctioned a girls' State Meet, although the Florida State College for Women hosted a state championship track meet for high school girls for several years during the 1920s. 1920, by the way, was the first year of publication for The Hill Top. No byline appears on the article, but Rees Williams (c/o 1921) was the circulation manager of The Hill Top. Draw your own conclusions.

Rees Williams had placed in the pole vault. It wouldn't be until 1922, two years later, that a Tallahassee athlete won an event at the State Meet. That year, Clifford Blitch of Leon (c/o 1922) won the 100-yard dash in 10.2--the State Meet record at the time. In 1927, Billy Chittenden of Leon (c/o 1927) won a State title in the pole vault, Rees Williams' event, going 10' 9-3/4", while also winning the high jump in 5' 10".

Since 1920, Tallahassee athletes have run faster, jumped higher, thrown and jumped farther. Neverthless, they are all following in the footsteps of Williams, Towles, Parker, and Williams.

Cody Thompson wins and Haley Hasty repeats at Florida Track Club's Melon Run

45th annual Jack Gamble Melon RunFourth of July road races aren't uncommon. John Adams foretold as much in 1776. Most cities have such a race, and Gainesville, Florida is no exception. But while everyone else has a "Freedom Run" or a "Firecracker Road Race," Gainesville's race has always been the Melon Run. Oh, in the early years when the Florida Track Club was still on the metric wagon it was the Metric Melon 5K. More recently it has been the Jack Gamble Melon Run. But for 45 years the race has been the Melon Run and for most of those years it has been three miles. If yards and miles were good enough for the Founding Fathers, those units are good enough for the Florida Track Club on the birthday of the United States.

On Tuesday morning, 4 July 2023, Cody Thompson won Florida Track Club's 45th annual Jack Gamble Melon Run by more than a minute, covering the three-mile course around Westside Park in 15:42. Haley Hasty successfully defended her 2022 women's title in the race, coming in fifth overall in 17:46.

Thompson entered the 2023 Melon Run with four years of experience racing cross-country for the Crystal River High Pirates, and another three years as a harrier for the Randolph College Wildcats. Two Gainesville athletes dueled for second, with Ivan Ruchkin edging Zane Grabau for the runner-up spot 16:50 to 16:51. Lake Mary, Florida athlete Daniel McCarthy was the first master runner in the race and the eighth male finisher, placing tenth overall in 18:35.

Gainesville's Katelyn Greenleaf took nearly 40 seconds off her time from the 2022 Melon Run to go 18:26 in 20:23, placing ninth overall and taking second in the women's standings. Katie Avery was third in the women's division, the same as in 2022. Her time in 2023 was 18:48, putting her thirteenth overall--just ahead of the 18:50 posted by the fourth women, Grace Kelly of Cincinnati, Ohio. Kelly was fourteenth overall. Sarah Williams of Gainesville was the first woman master and the ninth female finisher, 40th overall in 22:35.

285 athletes finished Florida Track Club's 2023 Jack Gamble Melon Run. Second Wind Race Timing of Chester County, Pennsylvania clocked the race. Expect the 46th annual Melon Run back in Westside Park on Thursday morning, 4 July 2024.

Harriers Olivia Niewald and Emerson Miller pick up Region 1 wins on the way to State

When it came to the 4A Region 1 cross-country meet, it didn't hurt to be from District 1.

In Florida high school cross-country, the semi-final round of the post-season are the Regional Championship Meets. The 4A Region 1 competition, held Saturday morning, 29 October 2022 at Sante Fe College, pitted the top teams of District 1 against the top teams of District 2. Now, it is true that Olivia Niewald, a senior from District 2 school Spruce Creek, won the girls' 5K in 18:29. But the rest of the winners were from District 1. The girls' team title went to Buchholz, a District 1 school, with 51 points. Emerson Miller, a Buchholz senior, won the boys' 5K in 15:20. And Creekside, another District 1 entry, scored 55 points to place as the first boys' team.

The girls' race started at 7:45, with a field that included Olympia sophomore Emily Knopfle and Buchholz senior Kate Drummond. Knopfle was the 2021 Region 1 champ as well as the 2022 Distict 2 champ. Drummond entered the race as the 2022 District 1 winner. Olivia Niewald outran them both, winning the race by nearly 50 meters in 18:29. Knopfle took second in 18:39. Creekside frosh held off Drummond for third, 18:47 to 18:49.

Drummond was joined in the top ten by three of her Buchholz teammates--juniors Lucy Voss (6th, 19:05) and Emma White (7th, 19:08) and sophomore Eleanor Whisler (8th, 19:09). Another sophomore, Ashley Hamilton, completed Buchholz's score, placing 34th in 20:28. The Buchholz girls had 51 points and their second straight Region 1 title. They would be heading on to State to defend their 2021 team championship.

Niceville put up 103 points to take second. Creekside was third with 119 points. Also qualifying for a trip to State were Nease (4th, 142), East Ridge (5th, 186), Mandarin (6th, 200), Oviedo (7th, 206), and Olympia (8th, 215).

Lillee Tang and Graham Myers score wins in 3A Region 1 cross-country

In Florida, the last obstacle that high school cross-country teams encounter on their way to the State Championships is a Regional Championship Meet. In 2022, you had to place as one of the top eight squads in your Region to advance to State. For the class 3A schools of Region 1, this test was at Sante Fe College in Gainesville, Florida on Saturday morning, 29 October 2022. The Ponte Vedra Sharks tested partiularly well, sweeping the team titles--the girls putting up 37 points in their race and the boys 42. The winning individual on the girls' side was Leon senior Lillee Tang, who covered the five-kilometer course in 18:08. The boys' champ was Fleming Island junior Graham Myers, first in 15:41.

The girls were scheduled to race first, with a starting time of 9:45. Lillee Tang had placed second in the Region in 2021, finishing runner-up to the defending champ, Sofia Bushkell of Ponte Vedra. A week earlier, Tang had finished second in the District to Belicia O'Grady, a Fort Walton Beach sophomore. Neither runner would touch Tang in this year's Region; the Leon senior's winning 18:08 put her across the finish line 80 meters ahead of her nearest challenger. Lindy White, a Ponte Vedra junior, took second in 18:25. Fort Walton Beach's O'Grady was third in 18:32.

Sophomores Daisy Ross and Sofia Bushkell joined Lindy White in cracking the top ten for Ponte Vedra, Ross sixth in 18:42 and Bushkell seventh in 18:58. The next two Sharks were senior Lily Darnell (11th, 19:47) and junior Hilaree Vega (13th, 19:56), giving Ponte Vedra 37 points and the Region 1 title for the second straight year.

The Leon girls were second with 57 points. Fort Walton Beach was third with 88. Five more teams also qualifed for the State Final--Fleming Island (4th, 95 points), Saint Augustine (5th, 98 points), Choctawhatchee (6th, 198 points), Matanzas (7th, 225 points), and Gainesville (8th, 230 points).

A tale of three Parkruns

In the Tallahassee, Florida region, April and October are the busiest months for road racing. July is probably the low point of the year. Maybe it's the weather, but other than Independence Day racing, you aren't going to see many opportunities to compete. Saturday, 30 July 2022 was typical, with Valdosta, Georgia's third annual Super Dad 5K the only race within 100 miles of Florida's Capital City. If you were willing to travel a little farther, though, there were three Florida Parkruns that day--in Gainesville, Clermont, and Pensacola.

Parkruns are weekly, community-based races, usually (if not always) five kilometers long. The events are free and supported by volunteers. Don't expect swag. I doubt there's insurance. But Parkruns are timed, and obsessive about recording those times. Athletes can track their progress because the Parkrun courses don't change. If you want to race but your wallet is a bit light, a Parkrun may be what you're looking for--especially if you already have a drawer full of finisher medals and a closet bulging with event T-shirts.

In Gainesville, the Parkrun venue is a five-kilometer loop on paved trail in Depot Park, about 150 miles from Tallahassee. The 30 July 2022 race was the 138th Parkrun on the course. John Black won the race by just over 100 meters, running 22:38. Brynn Baker was the first female finisher, placing eighth overall in 27:47--her best time yet in the Depot Park event. Gainesville Parkruns are Saturdays at 7:30 AM ET.

In Clermont, the Parkrun is also every Saturday morning at 7:30 AM ET. The Clermont course is out-and-back along Lake Minneola on the paved South Lake Trail. The 5K is USATF-certified (FL15121EBM), and Ani Veltcheva set a single-age world record for twelve-year-old girls there at Clermont Waterfront Parkrun #173, running 17:17. Veltcheva's time equalled the women's course record, set by Kate Bazely the previous year at Parkrun #124. That record still stands. Clermont Waterfront Parkrun #389 was Saturday morning, 30 July 2022, when Julio Rojas threw down a winning 17:00. It was his best time at Clermont and his 30th Clermont Parkrun--he was doing the race as a cross-country runner at Lake Minneola High and is still doing the race as a harrier for Lake Sumter College. Claire Reburn was the first female finisher, placing seventeenth overall in 21:16. An eighth-grader, Reburn runs cross-country for Foundation High. 129 athletes finished Clermont Waterfront Parkrun #389.

Andrew Imre won Parkrun #116 in Pensacola on Saturday morning, 30 July 2022, finishing just a few steps ahead of runner-up Caleb Carmichael. The two went 21:43 and 21:46. Kimberly Stewart was the first woman in the race, placing fiftteenth overall in 28:01. 89 athletes finished the race, somewhat above average for this particular Parkrun. The five-kilometer course is on the University of West Florida's Rec Plex North, touring one-and-a-half loops of grass and trail--a cross-country experience.

All threee of these races will be back at their venues on Saturday morning, 6 August 2022, and each Saturday after that. If you're in the neighborhood and want to run, register online, then print out your bar code and take it to the race. You won't get a trophy, a shirt, a medal, or even a race bib. You will get a run and a time.

On the streets of Gainesville, Gator duo Cade Monk and Josh Stern battle for the Melon Run title

Watermelon was being grown in Spain's colonies in Florida by 1576. Elsewhere in America, 200 years later, the Declaration of Independence was signed. It's unknown whether or not the Signers celebrated with slices of watermelon. Regardless of what was consumed in 1776, in Gainesville, Florida the Florida Track Club marks Independence Day with the Melon Run. On Monday morning, 4 July 2022, Cade Monk won the 44th annual Jack Gamble Melon Run, outkicking runner-up Josh Stern 15:31 to 15:33. Haley Hasty, a former UConn cross-country runner, was the first woman to finish the three-mile race around Westside Park, placing tenth overall in 17:31.

The race for the 2022 Melon Run title was an intramural affair--both Monk and Stern are member of the University of Florida cross-country team. Nearly 200 meters behind the two Gator distance runners, Tariq Fullerton of Gainesville was third in 16:08. Leonardo Canete of Tallahassee was the first master runner in the race, placing sixth overall in 16:56. It was Canete's second race of the long Independence Day weekend; two days earlier and 300 miles away he was the top master runner in Columbus, Georgia's Big Dog Heatwave Five Mile.

Gainesville's Betsy Suda was the first woman master in the Melon Run, placing second to Hasty in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 18:10. Suda is a five-time women's champ of the Melon Run, having won in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2018. 2022 was her first Melon Run as a master runner. Katie Avery of Bonita Springs, Florida was the third woman in the 2022 race, coming in fifteenth overall in 18:17.

finished Florida Track Club's 2022 Jack Gamble Melon Run. Endurance Sports Timing of Fort Myers, Florida clocked the race. Expect the 45th annual Melon Run back in Westside Park on Tuesday morning, 4 July 2022.

Emily Knopfle and Rheinhardt Harrison rule 4A Region 1

For Florida's class 4A cross-country teams in Region 1, the road to the State Championship doesn't always go through Sante Fe College. But more years than not, it does. Eleven times during the 21st Century, the 4A Region 1 Championship, the last qualifying race before the State Meet, has been contested on the grounds of Sante Fe College in Gainesville, Florida. The most recent instance was on Saturday morning, 6 November 2021, when the Buchholz girls won the 4A Region 1 title with 57 points, while Olympia frosh Emily Knopfle took home top individual honors with a winning 19:08. Nease senior Rheinhardt Harrison won the boys' 5K for the third year in a row, and Creekside took first in the boys' team standings with 67 points.

The field of the 4A Region 1 girls' 5K was made up of the qualifiers from the District 1 and District 2 championships. Buchholz junior Kate Drummond, the 4A District 1 champions, was on the starting line for the Region 1 5K. So was Olympia frosh Emily Knopfle, the winner of the 4A District 2 girls' race. The times had been faster in District 1, but who cares about times in cross-country? Apparently, Knopfle didn't put much stock in times, because the Olympia frosh piled up a 50-meter lead on the competition on the Sante Fe course, winning the race in 19:08. Drummond, racing in her hometown, took the runner-up spot in 19:19. Jada Williams, a Flagler Palm Coast senior, was third in 19:29.

In addition to Drummond, Buchholz put two more runners in the top ten--Bobcat sophomore Lucy Voss was fifth in 19:42 and frosh Eleanor Whisler was seventh in 19:48. Sophomore Emma White was the fourth runner for Buchholz, placing eighteenth in 20:22. Frosh Ashley Hamilton completed the Bobcat scoring, coming in 29th in 20:40. The Buchholz girls had 57 points and a 4A Region 1 win, their first since 2005.

The Niceville girls were Region 1 runners-up with 88 points, led by frosh Kaylin Olivarez (4th, 19:33). Knople and the Olympia girls placed third with 135 points.

Also among the eight teams qualifying for the State Final were Creekside (4th, 161 points), Mandarin (5th, 185 points), Bartram Trail (6th, 196 points), Chiles (7th, 215 points), and Nease (8th, 227 points).

Even before his senior year, Rheinhardt Harrison already had two state cross-country titles, winning Florida's 4A boys' championship race in 2019 and 2020. You don't often see other runners close to Harrison at the finish line, but you would have at the 2021 4A Region 1 boys' 5K. Harrison flashed across the finish line first in 16:00, but runner-up Brayden Seymore, a Hagerty junior, was right behind in 16:02. Buchholz junior Emerson Miller followed in 16:05.

Creekside's first runner, Mac Williams, wasn't in that photo finish, but the Knight junior did crack the top ten, placing eighth in 16:36. Another Creekside junior, Jack Dravo, was fourteenth in 16:44, just ahead of Knight sophomore Jack Zurn, fifteenth in 16:44. Creekside's remaining scorers were seniors Luke Kaelin (17th, 16:47) and Jesse Benavides (23rd, 17:04). Those five scorers gave the Knights 67 points and their first Region 1 title in class 4A (Creekside had won 3A Region 1 in 2015).

Immediately behind Creekside in the team standings, Bartram Trail and Buchholz each had 85 points. Bartram Trail's first runner was Buchholz first finisher had been Miller in third place, which Bartram Trail's top gun was senior Branden McDonald (7th, 16:34). But with identical team scores, it was the sixth runner on each squad that determined place. Thus, Bartram Trail grabbed second in the team standings when their number six, junior Peter Hudson, finished 40th in 17:32, fifteen places ahead of the Buchholz sixth runner.

The top eight teams advanced to the State Final. Rounding out that roster of qualifiers were Nease (4th, 102), Chiles (5th, 121), Niceville (6th, 128), Hagerty (7th, 187), and Oviedo (8th, 253).

The FHSAA Cross-Country State Championship Meet is scheduled for Friday morning, 12 November 2021, at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida.
