Emily Knopfle and Rheinhardt Harrison rule 4A Region 1

For Florida's class 4A cross-country teams in Region 1, the road to the State Championship doesn't always go through Sante Fe College. But more years than not, it does. Eleven times during the 21st Century, the 4A Region 1 Championship, the last qualifying race before the State Meet, has been contested on the grounds of Sante Fe College in Gainesville, Florida. The most recent instance was on Saturday morning, 6 November 2021, when the Buchholz girls won the 4A Region 1 title with 57 points, while Olympia frosh Emily Knopfle took home top individual honors with a winning 19:08. Nease senior Rheinhardt Harrison won the boys' 5K for the third year in a row, and Creekside took first in the boys' team standings with 67 points.


The field of the 4A Region 1 girls' 5K was made up of the qualifiers from the District 1 and District 2 championships. Buchholz junior Kate Drummond, the 4A District 1 champions, was on the starting line for the Region 1 5K. So was Olympia frosh Emily Knopfle, the winner of the 4A District 2 girls' race. The times had been faster in District 1, but who cares about times in cross-country? Apparently, Knopfle didn't put much stock in times, because the Olympia frosh piled up a 50-meter lead on the competition on the Sante Fe course, winning the race in 19:08. Drummond, racing in her hometown, took the runner-up spot in 19:19. Jada Williams, a Flagler Palm Coast senior, was third in 19:29.


In addition to Drummond, Buchholz put two more runners in the top ten--Bobcat sophomore Lucy Voss was fifth in 19:42 and frosh Eleanor Whisler was seventh in 19:48. Sophomore Emma White was the fourth runner for Buchholz, placing eighteenth in 20:22. Frosh Ashley Hamilton completed the Bobcat scoring, coming in 29th in 20:40. The Buchholz girls had 57 points and a 4A Region 1 win, their first since 2005.


The Niceville girls were Region 1 runners-up with 88 points, led by frosh Kaylin Olivarez (4th, 19:33). Knople and the Olympia girls placed third with 135 points.


Also among the eight teams qualifying for the State Final were Creekside (4th, 161 points), Mandarin (5th, 185 points), Bartram Trail (6th, 196 points), Chiles (7th, 215 points), and Nease (8th, 227 points).

Even before his senior year, Rheinhardt Harrison already had two state cross-country titles, winning Florida's 4A boys' championship race in 2019 and 2020. You don't often see other runners close to Harrison at the finish line, but you would have at the 2021 4A Region 1 boys' 5K. Harrison flashed across the finish line first in 16:00, but runner-up Brayden Seymore, a Hagerty junior, was right behind in 16:02. Buchholz junior Emerson Miller followed in 16:05.


Creekside's first runner, Mac Williams, wasn't in that photo finish, but the Knight junior did crack the top ten, placing eighth in 16:36. Another Creekside junior, Jack Dravo, was fourteenth in 16:44, just ahead of Knight sophomore Jack Zurn, fifteenth in 16:44. Creekside's remaining scorers were seniors Luke Kaelin (17th, 16:47) and Jesse Benavides (23rd, 17:04). Those five scorers gave the Knights 67 points and their first Region 1 title in class 4A (Creekside had won 3A Region 1 in 2015).


Immediately behind Creekside in the team standings, Bartram Trail and Buchholz each had 85 points. Bartram Trail's first runner was Buchholz first finisher had been Miller in third place, which Bartram Trail's top gun was senior Branden McDonald (7th, 16:34). But with identical team scores, it was the sixth runner on each squad that determined place. Thus, Bartram Trail grabbed second in the team standings when their number six, junior Peter Hudson, finished 40th in 17:32, fifteen places ahead of the Buchholz sixth runner.


The top eight teams advanced to the State Final. Rounding out that roster of qualifiers were Nease (4th, 102), Chiles (5th, 121), Niceville (6th, 128), Hagerty (7th, 187), and Oviedo (8th, 253).


The FHSAA Cross-Country State Championship Meet is scheduled for Friday morning, 12 November 2021, at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida.

The 2002, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2021 meets were at Sante Fe College in Gainesville. The 2014 and 2017 meets were at the Flagler County Fairgrounds in Bunnell. Chiles boys and Fleming Island girls triumph in 4A Region 1

Saturday, 7 November 2020, was not a great day for repeat winners at the FHSAA 4A Region 1 Meet.


Having graduated, Ashley Klingenberg wasn't around to defend her Region 1 title, and Niceville senior Lillian Holtery became the 2020 champion, running 19:12. Fleming Island scored 81 points to take the girls' team title, knocking off defending champ Chiles. The Chiles boys won the team title in their race with 47 points, while the defending champs from Bartram Trail were fourth. But Rheinhardt Harrison broke the pattern. The Nease junior successfully defended his 2019 title, cruising to a 15:46 win in the boys' 5K.


If there was a rematch in the girls' race it was between Lillian Holtery and Elizabeth Iliff. Iliff, a Creekside senior, and Holtery had finished just seconds apart in the 2019 Region 1 meet, with Iliff fourth in 18:37 and Holtery fifth in 18:40. The two were part of a lead pack of ten runners at the midpoint of the 2020 race. As the race wore on, the pack shrank. With the finish line approaching, Holtery charged away from Iliff and won the race, 19:12 to 19:15. Jada Williams, a junior on the Flagler Palm Coast team, placed third in 19:19.


In the team standings, Emma Millson led Fleming Island's charge; the Golden Eagle senior was sixth in 19:46. Another Fleming Island senior, Marisa Kortright, was eleventh in 20:05. The remaining Golden Eagle scorers were juniors Mei Chang (13th, 20:10) and Grace Adams (14th, 20:15) and frosh Allie Knotts (44th, 21:45), giving Fleming Island 81 points and the 2020 4A Region 1 girls' title.


Mandarin, led by junior Lauren Conover (15th, 20;19), was a close second with 90 points. Iliff and Creekside took third with 114 points, while Holtery and Niceville were fourth with 121 points. Spruce Creek took fifth, also with 121 points, but losing the tie-breaker to Niceville. It was an especially bitter loss, because only the top four teams qualified for the State Meet. For the rest of the field, the 2020 cross-country season was over.

Rheinhardt Harrison entered the boys' race as not only the defending 4A Region 1 champion, but also the 2019 4A State champion. He looked like it. Harrison led nearly the entire race, winning by more than 100 meters. Nease senior Bradley Ball was second to his teammate in 16:09. A sprint to the finish line decided third, with Forest senior Ashton Deriso (3rd, 16:45) outkicking Buchholz senior Ashok Jaishankar (4th, 16:46) and Chiles junior Ben Kirbo (5th, 16:46).

Kirbo was the first Timberwolf across the finish line, but he was followed by sophomore Wyatt Townsend (7th, 16:54), senior Nathan Reffitt (8th, 16:54), senior Jackson Sytsma (18th, 17:20), and junior Filippo Reina (19th, 17:20). Those five scored 47 points for Chiles, putting their squad first in the team standings. Chiles boys' teams had won a few class 3A state titles over the years, and more than a few class 3A regional titles, but this was their first regional win in class 4A.


Placing second, Creekside came close to keeping Chiles from the Region 1 title, scoring 52 points behind the ninth-place finish of Creekside junior Jesse Benavides (16:57). Rheinhardt Harrison and Nease scored 65 points, taking third. Bartram Trail, the 2019 champions, placed fourth with 73 points, led by senior Jahari White (6th, 16:48). As the top four teams, Chiles, Creekside, Nease, and Bartram Trail qualified for the State Final.


The FHSAA State Cross-Country Final is at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida, with the 4A races scheduled for Saturday morning, 14 November 2020.

The Chiles girls and Bartram Trail boys score narrow wins at 4A Region 1

Bartram Trail High opened in Jackonville, Florida in 2000. Lawton Chiles High opened a year earlier near Tallahassee, Florida. The cross-country teams of Bartram Trail, however, were competing in class 4A soon after the school opened, and the Bears even hosted the 4A Region 1 Championship Meet a few times. The Chiles harriers, on the other hand, only started in class 4A in 2019. Both schools were at Sante Fe College in Gainesville on Saturday morning, 2 November 2019, for the 4A Region 1 Meet. In their first appearance at the 4A Regional, the Chiles girls won their race, scoring 73 points. The Bartram Trail boys also scored their first 4A Region 1 title, edging Nease 66 to 69. Lake Brantley senior Ashley Klingenberg was first in the girls' 5K with an 18:20, while Nease sophomore Rheinhardt Harrison ran 15:30 to take first in the boys' race.


Nineteen teams were in the girls' race, each looking for a top eight finish that would earn them a berth in Florida's High School State Championship Meet in Tallahassee on 9 November 2019. Of course, the teams were also looking for a Region 1 title, as were the athletes in the race. For the seniors, it was their last chance at a Region win. Up front, three seniors were competing for that win--Ashley Klingenberg of Lake Brantley, Caitlin Wilkey of Chiles, and Alyson Churchill of Chiles. Klingenberg emerged from the scrum a few steps ahead, winning in 18:20. Wilkey was second in 18:26, and Churchill a close third in 18:28. Two more Chiles seniors, Emily Molen and Megan Churchill, took sixteenth and 22nd for the Timberwolves, running 19:45 and 20:05. Sophomore Kelly Davis finished the scoring for the Chiles girls, placing 39th in 20:41. Once Davis was across the finish line, the Chiles girls had a winning 73 points.


Led by senior Mikaela Brown, Mandarin placed second with 91 points. Creekside was third with 129 points, behind junior Elizabeth Iliff (4th, 18:37), their top runner. Niceville (4th, 141), Oviedo (5th, 165), Buchholz (6th, 167), Fleming Island (7th, 174), and Spruce Creek (8th, 231) also advanced to State.

Four years before Ashley Klingenberg won the 2019 4A Region 1 girls' race, she won FLYRA's 2015 Middle School Cross-Country Girls' State Championship. Rheinhardt Harrison of Nease was also a FLYRA state champ, winning the boys' race in 2017. At the Region, he was part of a trio of Nease runner who took the first three places in the boys' 5K--Harrison (1st, 15:30), senior Justin Tackling (2nd, 15:37), and junior Bradley Ball (3rd, 15:37).


The next athlete across the finish line, though, was a Bartram Trail Bear, junior Jahari White (4th, 15:54). And while Nease was waiting for their fourth scorer, the Bears brought four more runners home--junior Jalani White (8th, 16:03), sophomore Jemesu Picone (14th, 16:22), senior Sam Rautenstrauch (16th, 16:27), and sophomore Garrett Kauzlarich (24th, 16:41). The Bartram Trail boys had 66 points and would be taking home the first-place trophy.


Nease was just three points behind, the runner-up squad with 69 points. Oviedo was third in the nineteen-team field with 107 points. Niceville (4th, 134), Fleming Island (5th, 144), Mandarin (6th, 181), Chiles (7th, 183), and Creekside (8th, 185) also punched their tickets to State.

Kayley DeLay makes it six in a row at Jacksonville's Last Gasp Cross-Country Race

Don't be surprised if the women's award at Jacksonville Track Club's yearly Last Gasp 5K cross-country race is renamed the Kayley DeLay Cup.


Back when she was a frosh-year runner on the Fletcher High cross-country team, DeLay was the women's champ at the 2013 Last Gasp 5K. She also won the women's division in 2014, 2015, and 2016. During that same period, she also picked up Florida high school cross-country state titles in class 4A during 2015 and 2016. In 2017, as a first-year runner on the Yale University cross-country team, DeLay returned to Jacksonville, Florida to pick up a fifth win in the Last Gasp. And on Saturday afternoon, 29 December 2018, Kayley Delay notched her sixth straight Last Gasp women's title, placing sixth overall in the 42nd annual race with a 19:22.


Rheinhardt Harrison, the overall winner, ran 17:54. It was his first Last Gasp title, but given time, Harrison may have a record like DeLay's. A frosh at Nease High, Harrison only just finished his first season on the school's cross-country team, placing 23rd in the 2018 high school State Cross-Country Meet in the class 3A boys' race. A year earlier, he had won the boys' title at the 2017 Florida Youth Running Association's Middle School Cross-Country Championship.


Gary Myers was the fastest master runner in the 2018 Last Gasp 5K, finishing runner-up to Harrison in 18:29. Fifteen-year-old Paul Compaan made his second-straight appearance in the men's top ten at the Last Gap race, placing third overall in 18:45.


Fiona Affledt took second in the women's standings, placing twelfth overall in 19:58. Isabel Torres-Padin placed third on the women's side and sixteenth overall in 20:38. Michelle Krueger was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, eighteenth overall in 21:02.


200 athletes finished the 2018 Last Gasp 5K, completing a 3.1-mile cross-country course on the Jacksonville University campus. 1st Place Sports Running of Jacksonville, Florida timed and scored the race.

Bolles and Belen Jesuit get wins at a lake-free Alligator Lake

The ninth annual Alligator Lake Cross-Country Invitational wasn't held at Alligator Lake. After Hurricane Irma passed by Lake City, Florida on Monday morning, 11 September 2017, there was so much water in the lake that it had wandered out of its bed to see what was going on.


"Alligator Lake Park and its trails are still under about 3' of water," reported Dusty Smith of B3R Promotions, the meet hosts.


Rather than cancel the meet or transform it into a swimming event, B3R Promotions moved it to a higher and drier venue, The Oaks Equestrian Center in Lake City. No one seemed to have trouble finding the new location, because 135 teams and 1379 athletes made their way to the Equestrian Center on Saturday morning, 30 September 2017, to run one one of the nine races at the Alligator Lake Invitational.


Competition got started at 7:20 AM with the invitational section of the high school girls' 5K. Creekside's Claire Openshaw had raced Alligator Lake in 2016, when she finished a close second to Grace Blair of Oak Hall. Both Openshaw and Blair were back for the 2017 Alligator Lake, but this time it was all Openshaw. The Creekside sophomore won the race in 18:52, finishing 60 meters ahead of the runner-up, McIntosh sophomore Megan Uszynski. Blair was another twenty meters back, third in 19:11.


Chiles had two runners in the top ten--senior Ana Wallace (5th, 19:36) and junior Emily Culley (8th, 20:07)--but so did Bolles--seventh-grader Ella Mickler (7th, 20:03) and senior Rachel Shapiro (9th, 20:08). Bolles followed up with scoring performances by junior Maeve O'Riordan (11th, 20:13), frosh Layne Rivera (24th, 20:31), and sophomore Helena Kummings (27th, 20:40). That gave Bolles 78 points and first place in the 24-team field. Chiles was an extremely close second with 81 points. McIntosh edged Creekside for third, 97 to 101.

Unlike Openshaw and Blair, Belen Jesuit senior Joshua Collins hadn't raced Alligator Lake in 2016. Neverthless, Collins was at the meet in 2017, and won the invitational section of the high school boys' 5K in 16:13. Zach Jaeger, a McIntosh junior, took second in 16:35. Jacksonville Stanton senior Sam Skiles was third in 16:43.


Collins was the only Belen athlete in the top ten, but just outside the top ten the Wolverines had solid performances from eighth-grader Adam Magoulas (13th, 17:17), sophomore Matthew Bryan (14th, 17:20), and juniors Cesar Aguzzi (15th, 17:20) and Lucas De La Hoz (17th, 17:21). That solid pack of four runners plus Collins gave Belen 56 points and the Alligator Lake high school boys' team title. Chiles was second with 115 points, led by senior Michael Phillips (7th, 16:57), the defending state champion in class 3A. McIntosh was third among the 22 teams in the race with 132 points.

After two second-tier high school varsity races, the middle school girls' 3K started at 9:10 AM. The 2016 winner, Abraham Lincoln eighth-grader Ani Veltcheva, was in the race. Veltcheva defended her title and then some, winning the race by nearly 200 meters in 12:04. Bolles seventh-graders took the next two places, with Jillian Candelina second in 12:53 and Elizabeth Csikai third in 13:01. The next three Bolles scorers were eighth-grader Hadley Ropp (15th, 14:15), sixth-grader Leila Bata (21st, 15:02), and eighth-grader Cate Wachholz (24th, 15:07). After that the Bolles girls had 46 points and first place in the eight-team field. Holy Comforter edged the Saint John Striders for second, 70 to 71. Holy Comforter's top runner was sixth-grader Mary Clayton Soto, tenth in 14:01, while the Striders were led by seventh-grader Peyton Skoglund, fourth in 13:01.

The middle school boys' 3K followed the middle school girls' race. Eighth-grader Rheinhardt Harrison of the Saint Johns Striders won the latter event by 120 meters, running 11:15. Abraham Lincoln eighth-grader Anton Matchev was second in 11:45; Matchev had placed third in the 2016 race. Eighth-grader Austin Martin of the Ocala Distance Project edged Holy Comforter eighth-grader Leo Kelly for third, 12:03 to 12:07.


But Bolles claimed the next three places, with eighth-grader Frank Ruperto fifth in 12:10 and seventh-grader Aidan Ryan and Andrew McGraw sixth in 12:13 and seventh in 12:15. Bolles eighth-graders Matthew McClure (13th, 12:39) and Colin Duhnoski (15th, 12:52) finished the Bulldogs' scoring, giving their school 46 points and victory. The Saint Johns Striders took a close second place, outscoring Ruckel 76 to 77.
