Led by Junious Brown and Ella Porcher, Maclay paints Region 1 blue

There was a lot of Maclay blue on the podium at the FHSAA 1A Region 1 Cross-Country Championship in Lake City. That Saturday morning, 2 November 2019, Maclay won team titles in both the girls' race and the boys' race. Maclay frosh Ella Porcher took first in the girls' 5K, running 19:42. Junious Brown, a Maclay senior, won the boys' 5K in 16:00.

Ella Porcher

Up front, the girls' race could have been a replay of the 5K at the 1A District 1 Championship Meet, ten days earlier. There, Porcher had finished thirteen seconds ahead of runner-up Laci Watford, a University Christian sophomore. In the Regional 5K, Porcher and Watford were again the first two finishers, with Porcher beating Watford across the finish line 19:42 to 19:52. Maclay senior Hannah Hosay placed third in 20:34.

Porcher and Hosay were only the first two of four Maclay athletes in the top ten. Eighth-grader Susan Koeppel was less than a second behind Hosay, fourth in 20:35. Maclay frosh Sofia Paredes was eighth in 21:09. Senior harrier Rachael Stockel completed Maclay's scoring, coming in eleventh in 21:31. Once Stockel had finished, the Maclay girls had a mathematically unbeatable 23 points and the Region 1 title for the sixth year in a row.

Providence, led by eighth-grader Caitlynn Schultz (12th, 21:34), was second with 83 points. Providence was the last school to beat the Maclay girls at the Region 1 meet, winning Regional titles in 2011-2013. Saint Joseph was third with 100 points; their top runner was frosh Ana Whitehouse (7th, 21:06). Baker took fourth with 114 points, led by senior Maya Espinosa (5th, 20:40). Espinosa had been the 1A Region 1 champion in 2014 and 2015.

The top eight teams qualified for the Florida's State Championship Meet in High School Cross-Country at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee on 9 November 2019, so Maclay, Providence, Saint Joseph, and Baker all earned their tickets to State. Pensacola Christian (5th, 148), Community Christian (6th, 148), Saint Johns Country Day (7th, 172), and Bishop Snyder (8th, 222) also advanced.

Ten days after successfully defending his 2018 1A District 1 title, Maclay's Junious Brown successfully defended his 2019 1A Region 1 title. The Maclay senior won the Regional race by an even bigger margin in 2019; his winning 16:00 put him nearly 100 meters ahead of the next runner. Matthew Stratton, a sophomore running for Saint Johns Country Day School, took second in 16:20. Blountstown senior Xander Peacock was third in 16:47, and North Florida Christian senior David Andrew Keen was fourth in 17:01.

Pensacola Christian put three runners in the top ten--sophomore Jonathan Tutton (5th, 17:06), frosh Andrew Birx (6th, 17:22), and senior Carstan Cochran (10th, 17:52). But while the Pensacola Christian boys were waiting for their fourth runner, Maclay put their remaining scorers across the finish line--frosh Clayton Knox (11th, 17:54), frosh Carter Rothell (18th, 18:16), junior Michael Sweeney (21st, 18:21), and junior Sean-Patrick McCann (22nd, 18:24). The Marauder boys had 70 points and their first Region 1 team title since 2016.
