Kayley DeLay makes it six in a row at Jacksonville's Last Gasp Cross-Country Race

Don't be surprised if the women's award at Jacksonville Track Club's yearly Last Gasp 5K cross-country race is renamed the Kayley DeLay Cup.


Back when she was a frosh-year runner on the Fletcher High cross-country team, DeLay was the women's champ at the 2013 Last Gasp 5K. She also won the women's division in 2014, 2015, and 2016. During that same period, she also picked up Florida high school cross-country state titles in class 4A during 2015 and 2016. In 2017, as a first-year runner on the Yale University cross-country team, DeLay returned to Jacksonville, Florida to pick up a fifth win in the Last Gasp. And on Saturday afternoon, 29 December 2018, Kayley Delay notched her sixth straight Last Gasp women's title, placing sixth overall in the 42nd annual race with a 19:22.


Rheinhardt Harrison, the overall winner, ran 17:54. It was his first Last Gasp title, but given time, Harrison may have a record like DeLay's. A frosh at Nease High, Harrison only just finished his first season on the school's cross-country team, placing 23rd in the 2018 high school State Cross-Country Meet in the class 3A boys' race. A year earlier, he had won the boys' title at the 2017 Florida Youth Running Association's Middle School Cross-Country Championship.


Gary Myers was the fastest master runner in the 2018 Last Gasp 5K, finishing runner-up to Harrison in 18:29. Fifteen-year-old Paul Compaan made his second-straight appearance in the men's top ten at the Last Gap race, placing third overall in 18:45.


Fiona Affledt took second in the women's standings, placing twelfth overall in 19:58. Isabel Torres-Padin placed third on the women's side and sixteenth overall in 20:38. Michelle Krueger was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, eighteenth overall in 21:02.


200 athletes finished the 2018 Last Gasp 5K, completing a 3.1-mile cross-country course on the Jacksonville University campus. 1st Place Sports Running of Jacksonville, Florida timed and scored the race.

One more Gasp for Terrance Sessoms and Kayley DeLay

Jacksonville Track Club's Last Gasp Cross-Country Race was held in Jacksonville, Florida in 1977. The race was held again in 1978. And in 1979. JTC Running hosted the 41st Last Gasp on Saturday afternoon, 30 December 2017.


That's a lot of last gasps. Maybe they should reconsider the name?


Whether the 2017 Last Gasp was truly last or one of many, Terrance Sessoms won the race by nearly 400 meters. A Savannah State University cross-country runner and alumnus of Sandalwood High, Sessoms covered the 5,000-meter course through the Jacksonville University campus in 17:37. Kayley DeLay, a Yale University cross-country runner, took the women's title, placing second overall in 18:52. As a Fletcher High runner, DeLay had been the women's champ at each of the previous four Gasps, 2013 to 2016.


Jeffrey Wilke, a sophomore on the Sandalwood High cross-country team, was the second male and third overall in 19:01. Austin Moore outkicked Luke Wolf 19:17 to 19:18 for third in the men's standings and fourth place overall. Andy Nicol of Saint Augustine, Florida was the first master runner and fifth male finisher, sixth overall in 19:27.


Chelsey Palmer was the second woman and thirteenth overall in 19:59, while Jade Mukri was the third woman and fifteenth overall in 20:07. Jean Bouquet of Ponte Vedra, Florida was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, 21st overall in 20:26.


212 athletes finished JTC Running's 2017 Last Gasp 5K Cross-Country Race. 1st Place Sports Running of Jacksonville, Florida timed and scored the race.

Kayley Delay and Evan Babatz conquer the Classic

2016 was a busy year on the Apalachee Regional Park cross-country course in Tallahassee, Florida. Fifteen events were scheduled at the venue, including three with "National Championship" in their name. On one weekend alone, 4-6 November 2016, ARPXC was host to three meets--the FCSAA State Cross-Country Championship, the FHSAA State Cross-Country Championships, and the USA Track & Field Masters 5K Cross-Country National Championship.


Three meets in one weekend contrasts with only three meets in the entire year of 2009, the inaugural season for Apalachee Regional Park. One of those meets, though, was the Florida Athletic Coaches' Association's annual High School Senior All-Star Cross-Country Classic. The high school state meet eventually followed the Classic to Apalachee Regional Park, but the Classic was there first, and has been at ARPXC almost every year since 2009, missing only 2014. The seniors were there again on Saturday morning, 19 November 2016, for the twentieth annual FACA Senior All-Star Cross-Country Classic.


The girls' 5K started at 8:00 AM. By the end of the first mile, Kayley Delay and Samantha Folio had opened a ten-second gap on the rest of the field. The two runners continued to hold that lead, but Fletcher High's Delay, running for the North, couldn't break contact with Folio. Likewise, Holy Trinity's Folio, running for the East, wasn't able to get away from Delay. And it was Delay who got the victory, crossing the finish line a few steps ahead of Folio in a winning 18:45. Folio took second in 18:47. Running for the East, Hana Herndon of Winter Park was third in 18:56.


The East squad had one more runner in the top ten, with Winter Park's Elizabeth Jenkins finishing seventh in 19:15. The West team put all five of its scorers in the top ten, though, with Plant's Nadia Stratton fifth in 19:05, King's Micaela Torres sixth in 19:08, Sarasota's Sage Lyons eighth in 19:18, Wharton's Rania Samhouri ninth in 19:20, and Plant's Gillian Minnehan tenth in 19:26. Those five runners gave the West 38 points and the team title, narrowly beating the 41 points scored by the East team. Led by the fourth place 19:02 showing of Pace's Haley Kling, the North was third with 49 points. Ferguson's Jazmyn Martinez (12th, 19:51) was the top runner for the South, leading her team to fourth place with 97 points.

In the girls' race Kayley Delay was clearly in the lead at the mile mark with Samantha Folio close behind--a lead "group" of two athletes. In the boys' race no one was clearly in the lead at the mile mark because the lead group was huge--a mob thundering downhill toward the shell bridge. Satellites' John Cacciatore was near the front, though, and at the two-miles he had opened a 15-meter gap on the field. Four runners were in the pursuit group, paced by Evan Babatz from Fort Myers High. Over the final mile Babatz overtook Cacciatore then crossed the finish line with a winning 15:56.8. Cacciatore held off Buchholz High's Calum McFettridge to take second, 15:59.6 to 16:00.9.


Cacciatore was the first of five runners that the East team put in the top ten. He was joined by Satellite's Egan Kattenberg (5th, 16:07), West Shore's Austin Camps (7th, 16:12), Satellite's Michael Wilson (8th, 16:12), and Satellite's Trevor Kattenberg (9th, 16:13). No other team put more than three scorers in the top ten, and the East squad won the meet with 31 points. Behind Evan Babatz's first-place performance, the West team was second with 54, just ahead of the 60 points that the North scored to take third. The South was fourth with 77 points.
