Eduardo Garcia takes time out from marathon training to go 14:33 in Gainesville

Florida Track Club's Three-Mile Melon RunFour years.

For four years in a row, a Hensley brother won the annual Three-Mile Melon Run in Gainesville, Florida. Mike Hensley won the race in 2013, 2015, and 2016. Younger brother Matt Hensley took first in 2014. Between the Games of the XXX Olympiad in London and the Games of the XXXI Olympiad in Rio, Gainesville's Independence Day race belonged to the Hensleys. But on Tuesday morning, 4 July 2017, Eduardo Garcia of Gainesville ended Hensley's streak. A former University of Florida cross-country runner, Garcia won the 39th annual Melon Run by 200 meters, running 14:33. Jessica Pascoe, a second-year cross-country runner at the University of Florida, took the women's title, placing fourteenth overall in 16:47.

Garcia's 14:33 was the fastest time recorded at the Melon Run in at least twenty years. Blake Lowery, a second-year cross-country runner at the University of Florida, placed runner-up in 15:09. Bobby Hensley, another of the ubiquitous Hensley brothers, was third in 15:12. Mike Hensley, the defending champion, was eighth in 16:12.

Just twenty meters behind Pascoe, Betsy Suda was second in the women's standings and sixteenth overall in 16:51. Suda is a four-time Melon Run women's champ, with wins in 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2015. Georganne Watson of Gainesville was the third woman and 23rd overall in 17:51.

Gainesville's Patrick Gallagher was the fastest master runner in the Melon run, the eighteenth male finisher and twentieth overall in 17:20. Gainesville's Gretchen Loyd was the first woman master and twelfth female finisher, 45th overall in 19:25.

398 athletes finished Florida Track Club's 2017 Three-Mile Melon Run. Start 2 Finish Race Management timed the event.
