Enoch Nadler lowers the Frank Shorter Road Mile record to 4:20.7

On a Saturday in Gainesville, Florida--27 January 2007--Enoch Nadler went 4:09.77 in an indoor mile at the Diet Pepsi Invitational. Nadler was a sophomore on the University of Florida Gator track team, and that 4:09.77 stood as his best collegiate mark. It was good for second place in the race.


On a Tuesday in Gainesville, Florida--1 January 2019--Enoch Nadler went 4:20.7 in a road mile, Florida Track Club's fourth annual Frank Shorter Road Mile. That time was good for the win, Nadler's second at the event; he had also won the inaugural Frank Shorter Road Mile in 2016. The women's winner, Georganne Watson, did Nadler one better. Running 5:17.5, Watson collected her third straight Frank Shorter Road Mile women's title. Nadler's time stands as the event record. Watson set the Frank Shorter Road Mile women's record in 2017 when she ran 5:13.


Former University of Richmond distance running standout Justin Keefe took second in the men's race, which started at noon in Westside Park. Finishing nearly 60 meters behind Nadler, Keefe ran 4:30.6. Caden Monk, just off his senior year cross-country season at Buchholz High, ran 4:35.4 for third. Monk had also run the race in 2016 (10th, 5:38) and 2017 (8th, 5:08).


The women's race started at 12:35, and ended just over five minutes later with Georganne Watson more than 70 meters ahead of the next runner. There was a close race between Gainesville's Betsy Suda and Jade Mukri of Jacksonville for the second spot. Suda, women's champ at the 2016 Frank Shorter Mile, edged Mukri for the position, 5:33.2 to 5:34.8.


44 men got out on New Year's Day to finish the Frank Shorter Road Mile, and another 36 athletes finished the women's race.

Nadler and Watson repeat at Ironwood in the LGAA 5K

Distance running comes in three forms--cross-country, road, and track.


Some people will argue that there is also fell running and trail running, but those are just forms of cross-country for athletes with ambitions of suffering serious injury. Others will claim that indoor track is a separate discipline, but like a bonsai tree is still a tree, indoor track is still track.


Enoch Nadler of Team Florida Track Club planned to cover all three types of distance running in just over a week. On Thursday evening, 29 March 2018, Nadler went 5,000 meters on the track at the Florida Relays in Gainesville, running 14:05.30. On Saturday morning, 7 April 2018, he's scheduled to run the Apryle Showers 10K on the roads in Ponte Vedra, Florida. Between the two, on Thursday evening, 4 April 2018, Nadler won the twelfth annual Leadership Gainesville Alumni Association 5K cross-country race, running 16:42 on the turf of Gainesville's Ironwood Golf Course. It was the third year in a row that Nadler had won the race. Also repeating was Team FTC's Georganne Watson. Watson won the women's title for the second year in a row, placing eleventh overall in 18:34.

Luke Watson of Gainesville ran 17:10 for second overall, improving on his seventh-place finish in the 2017 LGAA 5K. Anton Matchev, an eighth-grader at Gainesville's Abraham Lincoln Middle School, took third in 17:23. It was Matchev's first time running under 18:00 on the course; he had run 18:20 in the 2015 race, 18:26 in 2016, and 18:36 in 2017. In the battle for the first master runner spot, Dan Stoner outran 2017's top master runner, Patrick Gallagher, 18:15 to 18:23. The two Gainesville athletes were seventh and eighth overall.


Kelly Griffin of Gainesville took second in the women's standings and fourteenth overall in 19:10. Gainesville's Rae Powers was the third woman and seventeenth overall in 20:06. Another Gainesville athlte, Sandy Flory, was the first woman master and sixth female finisher, placing 30th overall in 22:53.

196 athletes finished the 2018 LGAA 5K. Proceeds from the event benefit the scholarship and grant program of the Leadership Gainesville Alumni Association. The race was chip timed by Start To Finish Race Management of Alachua, Florida.

The weather outside was frightful, but at the Frank Shorter Mile Kumar and Watson were delightful

For nearly 40 years, Gainesville was home to the only indoor track in Florida. The University of Florida removed the track during renovations to the O'Connell Center after the 2015 indoor track season. Now, there's never a day in Florida so severe that you need an indoor track. In fact, there are very few days in the Sunshine State when you'd even prefer to race indoors. But Monday, 1 January 2017, was one of those days. Shortly after sunrise the temperature dropped into the 30s and stayed there for the rest of the day. The wind made it seem even cooler, as did the occasional light rain. It even snowed.


It was the kind of weather that inspires bond issues for indoor track and field facilities. It was not the kind of weather that Visit Florida wants people to know about.


Neverthless, it was the weather in which 76 athletes showed up at Gainesville's Westside Park for Florida Track Club's third annual Frank Shorter Road Mile. Ravi Kumar won the men's mile race, circling the two-lap course in 4:49. Georganne Watson took the women's mile with a 5:18.


The two-lap course in Westside Park was a new addition in the third year of the race. So was the introduction of two separate races, one for the men and one for the women. The men raced first, with a scheduled starting time of 12:00 noon. Kumar, a FTC-Elite athlete, won that opening race with a 4:49. Behind him, Seth Funderburg outkicked Oakleaf High sophomore Dylan Nelson for second, 4:52 to 4:53. Rich Smith was fourth in 4:53. Dan Stoner of Gainesville was the first master runner in the men's mile, placing fifth overall in 5:13. Abraham Lincoln Middle School eighth-grader Anton Matchev took sixth with a 5:20.


The women's race followed at 12:35 PM. Betsy Suda had claimed the women's title at the first Frank Shorter mile, running 5:30 in that 2016 race. In 2017, though, Suda was second in the women's standings to Georganne Watson, who went 5:13 to Suda's 5:23. Both runners were back in 2018 for a chilly rematch. Watson prevailed, successfully defending her title while edging Suda 5:18 to 5:20. A few steps back, Laura Ragland took third in 5:23. Sharon Beckwith and Caroline Worrall dueled for the top master runner spot in the women's race, with Beckwith getting the nod 7:05 to 7:06. Beckwith and Worrall placed eighth and ninth overall.


76 athletes finished the 2018 Frank Shorter Road Mile, 45 in the men's race and 31 in the women's race. Start 2 Finish Race Management timed the event.

Enoch Nadler's 15:12 wins the LGAA 5K

The eleventh annual Leadership Gainesville Alumni Association 5K broke a lot of rules. Most community races are run on a Saturday morning, but the LGAA 5K was run on a Wednesday evening, 5 April 2017. Even though the event is scheduled at a time of year that is considered track season in the United States, it's a cross-country run, with a course on Gainesville, Florida's Ironwood Golf Course. And where community races almost exclusively emphasize individual achievement, the LGAA 5K plays up team competition, billing itself as a "Team Challenge."


Gainesville athlete Enoch Nadler didn't have to break any rules to win the 2017 LGAA 5K, though. The Team Florida Track Club coach just ran fast, posting a 15:12 to successfully defend his 2016 LGAA 5K title. It was the fastest time at the LGAA 5K since at least 2010. Georganne Watson of Gainesville took the women's title with a similarly swift 18:34, possibly the best mark ever by a woman at the annual race, and certainly the best since 2010.


For the third year in a row, Gainesville's Jeremy Criscione was runner-up in the race. A former University of Florida trackman, Criscione ran 16:11. Andy Merrill of Starke, Florida placed third in 16:24. Gainesville's Patrick Gallagher was the fastest master runner in the race and tenth overall in 17:55.


Nadler finished nearly a minute ahead of the next runner, but Georganne Watson's competition on the women's side was somewhat closer. Women's runner-up Stephanie McGrail of Gainesville was just six seconds behind Watson, placing fourteenth overall in 18:40. Just a few second later Kelly Griffin of Gainesville finished third in the women's standings and fifteenth overall in 18:49. Gainesville's Gretchen Lloyd was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, 26th overall in 20:42.


189 athletes finished the 2017 LGAA 5K. Proceeds from the event benefit the scholarship and grant program of the Leadership Gainesville Alumni Association. The race was chip timed by Start To Finish Race Management of Alachua, Florida.

Mark Parrish turns a 4:23 on the Gainesville roads at the Frank Shorter Mile

Back in 1972, the year of the Munich Olympic Games, when we thought about milers we thought about Jim Ryun, who held the world and american records in the event. Marty Liquori, Ryun's rival at the distance, might also come to mind. We might even have considered Steve Prefontaine--not quite as accomplished a miler as either Ryun or Liquori, but certainly a more vocal one. Frank Shorter, though, wouldn't have come to mind. Shorter wasn't even a sub-4:00 man; his strength was in the longer races.


But Liquori didn't make the Olympic team that year, and at the Games Ryun didn't make it to the final. Prefontaine came home from Munich without a medal. It was Shorter who won Olympic Gold that year, albeit in the marathon. Also, Shorter was a member of the Florida Track Club at the time. So in 2016, when that Gainesville, Florida club staged their first New Year's Day road mile, they called it the Frank Shorter Mile. The name stuck, and the second annual Frank Shorter Road Mile was held at noon on Sunday, 1 January 2017.


Former University of Florida track man Mark Parrish won the second annual event, running 4:23. His former teammate, Eduardo Garcia, took second in 4:27. Michael Twist, a cross-country runner for the Elizabethtown College Blue Jays, was third in 44:40. Rob Robins of Gainesville was the fastest master runner in the mile, finishing ninth overall in 5:09.


Georganne Watson took the women's title with a 5:13, good for tenth overall. The battle for second in the women's standings was closely fought between Betsy Suda, the 2016 women's champ, and Abraham Lincoln Middle School's Ani Veltcheva, the 2016 Florida state champion in middle school cross-country. Suda prevailed at the finish line, running 5:23 to Veltcheva's 5:24. The two athletes were twelfth and thirteenth overall.


The top three men were awarded cash prizes of $200, $100, and $50, with the top three women receiving identical amounts. Age group winners received bottles of sparkling wine. Appropriate adjustments were made when the awards conflicted with regulations regarding amateur status or laws about the drinking age.


90 athletes finished the 2017 Frank Shorter Road Mile. Start 2 Finish Race Management timed the event.
