The battle at Barnes goes to Buntin and Spry

Barnes Healthcare is an old business, having started out as a Valdosta, Georgia drugstore back in 1909. Barnes Healthcare's annual race, the Barnes 100 Years 5K, is not nearly as old, having first been run in 2009. Somewhere between the two in age is Albany, Georgia's Courtland Buntin, a senior on the Deerfield-Windsor School cross-country team who was born in 1999. The three came together on Saturday morning, 15 July 2017, when Buntin won the ninth annual Barnes 100 Years 5K, running 19:44 on the Valdosta streets. Vanessa Spry of Valdosta was the women's champion, placing fourth overall in 21:44.


Valdosta's Dan Butzin, winner of the 2015 Barnes 100 Years 5K, was second in 20:14. Berrien County High sophomore cross-country runner Morgan Bolmer took third in 20:53. Billy Taylor of Valdosta was the top master runner in the race and the fourth overall male, sixth overall in 22:51.


Chevy Newham of Valdosta was the women's runner-up and eighth overall in 23:04. Valdosta's Lauren Bewley placed third in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 25:36. Amy Reese of Valdosta took top woman master honors, the sixth female finisher and 22nd overall in 29:04.


65 athletes finished the 2017 Barnes Healthcare 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.
