Dan Butzin regains the throne at the Smoothie King 5K

Valdosta, Georgia is known as the Azalea City. Native deciduous azalea bushes grown in the woods around the city. In the city itself, people have planted an Asian evergreen variety of azalea. When both kinds of azalea are blooming, you know it's about time for the Smoothie King 5K.


The flowers were certainly out on Saturday morning, 10 March 2018, when Valdosta triathlete Dan Butzin won the eighteenth annual Smoothie King race, covering the 3.1-mile course in 20:22. Krystina Pastrana of Valdosta was the top woman, placing seventh overall in 26:49.


Butzin crossed the finish line more than 300 meters ahead of the next runner, notching his third Smoothie King win in four years--he was second in the 2017 race. Lake Park, Georgia's Dylan Guilmette, who had finished fourth in the 2016 Smoothie King 5K, moved up to second in the 2018 race, running 22:49. Kevin Goldman of Valdosta took third in 22:56. Valdosta's Harrison Whitman was the fastest master runner in the race, placing fourth overall in 23:12.


Just 30 meters behind Pastrana, Meshea Hardeman of Valdosta was the runner-up, coming in eighth overall in 26:59. Thirteen-year-old Valdosta runner Victoria Garcia took third in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 27:54. Delleese Collins of Valdosta was the first woman master and seventh female finisher, seventeenth overall in 28:58.


40 athletes finished the 2018 Smoothie King 5K. The race was hosted by the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority, and A Course/Line, LLC of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Dan Butzin speeds the roads at Speed The Light

Since about 1970, the population of Adel, Georgia has been just over 5,000. That's about one person for every meter of the Speed The Light 5K, held on the streets of Adel on Saturday morning, 14 October 2017.


Dan Butzin of Valdosta, Georgia won the race, running 19:51. Eleven-year-old Noah Barber of Sparks, Georgia edged twelve-year-old Devin Schramm of Adel for second, both athletes clocked in 27:33. Steve Schramm of Adel was the top master runner in the race, fourth overall in 17:33.


Jessica Smith of Adel was the first woman in the race and sixth overall in 35:34. Caitlin Kelly of Adel was second in the women's standings and seventh overall in 35:55, while Kate Lawrence of Adel was the third female finisher and eighth overall in 36:01. Hahira, Georgia athlete Jennifer Sumner was the top woman master and fourth female finisher, eleventh overall in 36:36.

Butzin repeats and Spry wins at Hahira's Get-A-Mammy 5K

Finishing just over a minute ahead of the next runner, Valdosta, Georgia's Dan Butzin ran a winning 20:08 in the seventh annual Get-A-Mammy 5K on Saturday morning, 30 September 2017. It was the second victory in a row at the Hahira, Georgia road race for Butzin. Vanessa Spry of Valdosta took the women's title, placing fifth overall in 22:25. 138 athletes finished the race.


Johathan Daniely, a Highland Christian Academy cross-country runner, was second in 21:08. A few steps behind Daniely, Thom Bateman of Winnetka, Illinois finished third in 21:11, the fastest master runner in the race.


Another Highland Christian cross-country runner, Alden Lisse was second in the women's standings and eighth overall in 22:45. Just seven days earlier, Lisse had won the women's division in the Above The Rim 5K. Pollyanna Bass of Pavo, Georgia was the top woman master and third female finisher, tenth overall in 23:09. Gabriell Mann, a frosh on the Citizen's Christian Academy cross-country team, was the fourth woman and fourteenth overall in 24:36


Proceeds of the annual event benefit Get-A-Mammy, Inc., a non-profit that provides funds for mammograms, reconstructive surgery, and cancer research. The organization also works to increase awareness of the importance of regular mammograms in the early detection of breast cancer, urging all women to "get a mammy." A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia provided timing and finish line services for the seventh annual Get-A-Mammy 5K.

Butzin and Price repeat in Reed Bingham

The Little River flows through South Georgia, eventually adding its waters to the Withlacoochee River near Valdosta. Sometimes it shrinks to a trickle, other times it swells with floodwaters and covers the trails in Reed Bingham State Park. Through all of its transformations, it remains the Little River.


Reed Bingham State Park has an annual footrace that changes nearly as much as the Little River. It was originally a pair of trail runs in the park, a 10K and a 5K, known as the Road Kill Run and held in conjunction with Buzzard Day--a celebration of the vultures who wintered along the river. After uncounted years in that form, the Road Kill Run became a 5K road race through the park in 2012. As the Road Kill 5K, the event wandered around the calendar, held in February, April, or May during various years. In 2017 the very name of the race changed, and it became the Little River Run 5K.


But just as the Little River retains its identity through all it changes, so has the race that now takes its name from the river. You can see that in the results of the race, how the same athletes compete year after year. That was certainly the case on Saturday morning, 22 April 2017, when 2016 winner Dan Butzin returned to the race and won again, running 18:59. Likewise, the 2015 women's champ, Annie Price, came back to Reed Bingham State Park and took the 2017 women's title, placing third overall in 20:56.


Behind Valdosta's Butzin, Colquitt County High sophomore Mitchell Riley took second in 20:46. Rick Mazurkiewicz of Valdosta was the fastest master runner in the race, coming in fourth overall in 21:47.


Returning to the theme of change, Valdosta's Anne Price may have been a repeat winner, but her 20:56 set a new course record for women. Polyanna Bass of Pavo, Georgia was the first woman master and second female finisher, sixth overall in 22:31. Laura Solomon of Nashville, Georgia was third in the women's standings and ninth overall in 24:04.

Butzin and Smith spare the scissors but not the speed

Valdosta Middle School's Don't Run With Scissors 5K has graced the racing calendar in Valdosta, Georgia annually since 2010. I don't know whether or not in the first eight years of the event anyone ever appeared on the starting line with a pair of those giant golden scissors that politician use at ribbon cuttings for bridges, highways, and wastewater treatment plants. I do know that on Saturday morning, 18 March 2017, Valdosta athlete Dan Butzin won the eighth annual Don't Run With Scissors 5K by over 150 meters, running 19:31. Elizabeth Smith took the women's title, placing fifth overall in 21:39.


Butzin had placed second at the Scissors 5K in 2015 and third in 2016, but this was his first win at the race. Parker Reid Jackson, a cross-country runner on the Valdosta Middle School team, was second behind Butzin in 20:08. Kasey Taylor took third in 20:34. Alan Sanderson was the first master runner in the race, coming in sixth overall in 22:07.


Like Butzin, women's champ Elizabeth Smith had some history at the Scissors 5K. Smith had placed second to master runner Alice Smoot in the women's standings of the 2016 race, running 21:57. Returning in 2017, Smith trimmed eighteen seconds off her previous year's time to claim the women's crown. Kelly Davis was second to Smith on the women's side, placing seventh overall in 22:59. Pollyanna Bass was the top woman master and third female finisher, ninth overall in 23:06.

New year victories for Butzin and Lincoln at the Resolution 5K

Saturday is the usual day for road racing, with the occasional exception for a holiday or a Sunday marathon. 2017 has 52 Saturdays. In Valdosta, Georgia the first Saturday morning of 2017, 7 January 2017, was the day of the Resolution 5K. The 3.1-mile race started from the Boys & Girls Club on Lake Laurie Drive.


Running 19:00, Valdosta athlete Dan Butzin won the race, finishing more than 400 meters ahead of the next runner. Valdosta athletes Ariel Godwin and James Tracy were locked in a close race for second, with Godwin narrowly prevailing 20:52 to 20:53.


Mary Scott Lincoln of Valdosta was the first woman in the 5K, placing fifth overall in 27:12. Moultrie, Georgia's Ashley Walden was runner-up in the women's standings and sixth overall in 28:20. Amy Reese of Valdosta was the first master runner in the race and the third female finisher, seventh overall in 28:50.


42 athletes finished Valdosta's 2017 Resolution 5K. The event was a benefit for the Boys & Girls Club of Valdosta. A Course/Line, LLC timed the race and provided finish line services.

In Hahira, Butzin and Davis lead the race to Get-A-Mammy

Dan Butzin bested a field of 101 athletes on Saturday morning, 24 September 2016, running 19:03 to win the sixth annual Get-A-Mammy 5K. The 3.1-mile road race was run from Bethany Baptist Church in Hahira, Georgia.


Butzin is a Valdosta, Georgia, athlete, as were the next three finishers. Rob McGhin was second in 20:54, and Jim Simoneau was third in 22:30. Heath Martin, an alumnus of the Valwood School cross country team, ran 22:49 for fourth.


Kelly Davis of Valdosta took the women's title, placing fourth overall in 22:53. Another Valdosta runner, Lauren Bewley, was runner-up on the women's side and seventh overall in 24:18.


Valdosta's Jim Dawkins was the fastest master runner in the race and fifth overall in 24:00. Gina Purvis of Tifton, Georgia was the first woman master and third female finisher, eighth overall in 24:35.


Proceeds of the annual event benefit Get-A-Mammy, Inc., a non-profit that provides funds for mammograms, reconstructive surgery, and cancer research. The organization also works to increase awareness of the importance of regular mammorgrams in the early detection of breast cancer, urging all women to "get a mammy." A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia provided timing and finish line services for the sixth annual Get-A-Mammy 5K.

Butzin and Davis are A-1 at the B-1 5K

Valdosta, Georgia athlete Dan Butzin won the B1 5K for The Awareness and Prevention of Youth Suicide on Saturday morning, 10 September 2016. Butzin's time for the 3.1-mile run through the streets of Valdosta was 18:43, putting him some 250 meters ahead of the next runner. Kelly Davis of Valdosta was the top woman in the race, placing fourth overall in 23:11. 53 athletes finished the first-year event.


Nashville, Georgia's Morgan Bolmer--a frosh on the Berrien County High cross country team--was the overall runner-up in 19:43. Jim Simoneau of Valdosta placed third in 22:53.

Valdosta's Lisa Graves was the top master runner in the race and second female finisher, coming in fifth overall in 27:06. Adel, Georgia's Jack Ring was the first male master, and eleventh overall in 29:01.


A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia provided timing and finish line services at the event.

Hermine can't halt Butzin or Green

Very early on Friday morning, 2 September 2016, Hurricane Hermine made landfall along the coast of the Florida Panhandle. A few hours the storm went by Valdosta, Georgia. The center didn't blow right up Hill Avenue, but it was close. Over two days nearly five inches of rain were recorded in the city.


Several road races and cross country meets scheduled in the area for that Labor Day Weekend were canceled. But in Valdosta, the eighth annual Labor Day 5K went on as planned on Monday morning, 4 September 2016. Dan Butzin won the post-Hermine race through the streets of Valdosta in 18:03, while master runner Debbie Green took the women's title in 21:44, placing eleventh overall.


Half a minute behind Butzin, Deshon Taylor, a junior on the Valdosta High cross country team, was runner-up in 18:33. Nicholas Rosatti of Hahira, Georgia placed third in 18:54. John Bolmer of Nashville, Georgia was the first master runner in the race, placing ninth overall in 21:08.


Debbie Green was just ahead of the next runner in the women's standings, Elizabeth Smith of Valdosta. The second woman across the finish line, Smith was twelfth overall in 21:48.


Alden Lisse, a junior at Highland Christian Academy, edged Kelly Davis of Valdosta for third in the women's standings, 23:02 to 23:06. Lisse and Davis were eighteenth and nineteenth overall.


106 athletes finished Valdosta's eighth annual Labor Day 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Summertime is Butzin's and Will's time

2016 was the first year of Quitman, Georgia's Four Seasons four-mile races. Quitman master runner David Monds won the winter race and the spring race, the first two events in the series. Seasons change, though, and spring gave way to summer. And at the Four Seasons Summer Four Mile on Saturday morning, 6 August 2016, Valdosta, Georgia's Dan Butzin unseated Monds, winning the race in 24:57. Lauren Will of Tallahassee, Florida was the women's champion, placing sixth overall in 34:32.


Butzin finished the four-mile race nearly half a mile ahead of the next runner. Monds was the fastest master runner in the race, finishing second overall in 28:22. Valdosta master runner Reginaldo Zandonade placed third overall in 32:04.


Pavo, Georgia athlete Polyanna Bass was the top woman master and second female finisher, placing seventh overall in 35:23. Valdosta master runner Lisa Graves was third in the women's standings and ninth overall in 38:22. Graves took the women's title at the first Four Seasons run, the Winter Four Mile on 27 February 2016.


One more season remains in 2016 and one event is left in Quitman's 2016 Four Seasons race series, the fall four mile on 19 November 2016.

Butzin and Presler win the battle at the Georgia Military College 5K

You may not know how many road races Dan Butzin has won in 2016, but it's a good number. If you are keeping track, add one more to the total--Butzin picked up another victory on Saturday morning, 25 June 2016, at the third annual Georgia Military College 5K in Valdosta, Georgia. The Valdosta distance runner ran a course record 18:38, winning the five kilometer race by more than a kilometer. Katie Presler of Valdosta was the first woman in the race, placing eighth overall in 26:02. 73 athletes finished the 3.1-mile event.


Carson Locke, an incoming frosh at Lowndes High, finished runner-up in 23:58. Andrew Caruana of the Viking Runners Club took third in 24:06.

Valdosta's Susan Riordan-Smith was the top master runner and the second female finisher in the race, placing ninth overall in 26:09. Not far behind Riordan-Smith, Jen Kuakel, another Valdosta master runner, was third in the women's standings and tenth overall in 26:13.


Proceeds of the third annual Georgia Military College 5K benefit the school's scholarship fund. A Course Line, LLC, of Valdosta provided timing and finish line services to the race.

Butzin and O'Linn take the Daylily City 5K

On 7 May 2016 Dan Butzin couldn't catch Ryan Kelly on the trails of Hahira, Georgia and had to settle for second place in the Julep Jog 5K. Two weeks later, though, things were different on the streets of Adel, Georgia at the seventh annual Daylily City 5K. There, even though Kelly had won each of the last three Daylily City titles, Butzin finished 30 meters ahead of him for the win, 18:06 to 18:13. Riley O'Linn, a rising junior on the Valwood School cross country team, captured the women's crown, coming in eighth overall in 22:27.


Behind the Butzin-Kelly duel, Nick Rosatti of Hahira placed third in 19:07. Joseph Todd Miles of Valdosta, Georgia took top master runner honors, coming in seventh overall in 22:10.


Debbie Green of Valdosta was the first woman master, coming in second behind Riley O'Linn in the women's standings and tenth overall in 22:41. Cyndi Lamica of Adel was the third female finisher and fifteenth overall in 23:33.


66 athletes finished the 2016 Daylily City 5K. Timing and finish line service for the race were provided by A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia.

Easy wins for Buztin and Mazurkiewicz at Breathe Easy 5K

14 May 2016 was just seven days after Valdosta, Georgia athlete Dan Butzin finished second in the Julep Jog 5K in Hahira. It was also the Saturday morning that Butzin returned to competition on the Lowndes County roads, this time winning the second annual Breathe Easy 5K on the streets around Valdosta State University. Butzin covered the 3.1-mile course in 18:15. Valdosta master runner Martha Mazurkiewicz was the first woman in the race and second overall in 22:57.


Rodney Elam was the top male master runner in the Breathe Easy 5K, coming in third overall in 18:15. Master runner Justin Naylor was fourth overall in 23:30, and nine-year-old Jamil Williams was fifth in 25:01. Williams came back later in the morning and won the one-mile fun run in 7:35.


Cassie O'Neal took second in the women's standings, placing eighth overall in 27:12. Ashley Horton was the third female finisher, coming in twelfth overall in 29:40.


73 athletes finished the second annual Breathe Easy 5K, another nine completed the one-mile fun run. The Valdosta Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta hosted the event, with proceeds benefiting asthma education efforts, the Georgia Department of Public Health South Health District Children’s Medical Services, and the Chapter's book scholarship program for area high school seniors.

Butzin and Newton are champion Road Killers

That's how far ahead Dan Butzin was when he crossed the finish line of the Road Kill 5K in Georgia's Reed Bingham State Park on Saturday, 23 April 2016. A Valdosta, Georgia athlete, Butzin ran the 3.1-mile course through the park in 18:10. John Thomas, a Cook High School sophomore, placed second in 21:48. Tifton, Georgia's John Hall outkicked James Hawke of Sylvester, Georgia for the top master spot, 22:11 to 22:12. Hall and Hawke were third and fourth overall.


Traci Newton of Saint Simons Island, Georgia took the women's title, placing eighth overall in 25:57. Nashville, Georgia's Sarah Ray was the women's runner-up and eleventh overall in 27:33. Constance Thomas, another Nashville runner, was the top woman master and third female finisher, fourteenth overall in 27:58.


50 athletes finished the 2016 Road Kill 5K Run. The race is held annually by the Friends of Reed Bingham State Park for the benefit of the park. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia timed and scored the run.

Butzin wins by a ton, Thornhill by ounces at the James Eunice 5K

If Dan Butzin didn't experience "the loneliness of the long-distance runner" during the fifth annual James Eunice Legacy 5K, it wasn't for lack of solitude. There may have been 77 runners in the race, but Butzin had no company at all during his Saturday morning, 9 April 2016, run through the streets of Valdosta, Georgia. Winning the race in 18:43, Butzin finished 400 meters ahead of the next runner. The women's competition may not have been companionable, but it was close--Alison Thornhill edged Alice Smoot for the title, 21:23 to 21:26.


Rick Mazurkiewicz of Valdosta was the top master runner in the race, finishing runner-up in 20:21. Another Valdosta athlete, Rob McGhin, was third in 20:47.


The top two women, Thornhill and Smoot, were fourth and fifth overall. Debbie Green, a Valdosta master runner, was third in the women's standings and seventh overall in 22:42.


77 athletes finished the race. Finish line and timing services were provided by A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia.

Butzin and Smoot rule at the Smoothie King 5K

On 12 March 2016, just seven days after posting a win in the Adel Kiwanis 5K, Dan Butzin was back in the streets, racing. This Saturday morning, he was competing in Valdosta, Georgia's 16th annual Smoothie King 5K, defending his 2015 title in the race. The defense was successful. Butzin was first in a field of 52, running the 3.1-mile course in 19:15. Valdosta, Georgia master runner Alice Smoot was the women's champion, placing fourth overall in 22:07. It was also Smoot's second title in the event; she was the first woman in the 2011 race.


Quin McGlamery, a sophomore on the Valdosta High cross country team, finished runner-up in 19:38. David Monds of Quitman, Georgia was the fastest master runner in the Smoothie King race, placing third overall in 21:37.


Hahira, Georgia athlete Sierra Nazario was second in the women's standings, coming in eighth overall in 24:15. Sarah Blake of Valdosta edged Lake Park's Eryn Guilmette 27:54 to 27:55 for the third women's spot. Blake and Guilmette finished 14th and 15th overall.


Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority hosts the Smoothie King 5K. Up till 2014, the race was known as the Azalea Festival 5K. Timing and finish line services for the event were provided by A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia.

Butzin and Green ace the Adel Kiwanis 5K

Valdosta, Georgia runners swept the top spots in the annual Kiwanis 5K in Adel, Georgia on Saturday morning, 5 March 2016. A half-hour drive north of the Azalea City, Valdosta's Dan Butzin won the 3.1-mile race through the streets of Adel, running 18:34. On the women's side, Valdosta master runner Debbie Green took top honors, finishing eighth overall in 22:21.


Behind Butzin, Nick Rosatti of Hahira, Georgia ran 19:20 to finish runner-up for the second year in a row. Rosatti had won the Kiwanis 5K in 2014. Rick Mazurkiewicz of Valdosta was the fastest master runner in the race, placing third overall in 20:04.


Lauren Bewley of Valdosta was second in the women's standings, coming in tenth overall in 23:39. Valdosta master runner Martha Mazurkiewicz was the third female finisher, 14th overall in 25:00.
