Cody Pezent and Constance Thomas win big at Little River

Reed Bingham State ParkGeorgia's Reed Bingham State Park isn't in any town. It's far enough off the beaten path that it's on the border separating Colquitt County and Cook County. But Reed Bingham is closest to Adel, Georgia. And in the park on Saturday morning, 20 April 2019, it was an athlete from Adel, Cody Pezent, who won the Little River Run 5K. Runner-up in the 2018 edition of the annual race, Pezent ran 19:42 to take first in 2019. Nashville, Georgia master runner Constance Thomas was the first woman in the race, placing eleventh overall in 27:01.


Aidan Evans, an eight-grader and cross-country runner for Tift Middle Schools, finished second in the 5K, running 22:35. Tom Thomas of Nashville, Georgia was third in 22:56. Karl Brown of Valdosta, Georgia was the first master runner in the race, placing fourth overall in 24:20.


Adel master runner Angela Pezent placed second in the women's standings and twelfth overall in 27:21. Catherine Jones, a master runner from Thomasville, Georgia, was the third woman and thirteenth overall in 27:58.


29 athletes finished the 2019 Little River Run 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Fulp and Lohr race through two counties to win the Little River 5K

Reed Bingham State ParkThe Little River Run 5K is run entirely inside Georgia's Reed Bingham State Park, but the race still takes place in two different counties. The park straddles the Little River, which marks the boundary between Colquitt County and Cook County. So the race starts in Colquitt County, but most of the running is done in Cook County before the runners return to the west side of the river and finish back in Colquitt County.


Cook and Colquitt had to each take a back seat to another county, though, on Saturday morning, 21 April 2018, when Lowndes County resident Cavan Fulp won the Little River Run 5K in 20:25. Fulp, a student at Lowndes High, lives in Hahira, Georgia. Melanie Lohr, a master runner from Elkton, Florida, won the women's title, placing sixth overall in 25:48.


Finishing less than 30 meters behind Fulp, Cook High cross-country runner Cody Pezent took second in the race, running 20:31. Daniel Carver of Hahira was third in 21:35.


Adel, Georgia master runner Angela Pezent was the second woman and eighth overall in 26:35. Langley Wooten, a frosh-year member of the Thomas County Central cross-country team, was third in the women's standings and twelfth overall in 27:54.


Allen Wooten of Thomasville, Georgia was the first male master runner in the race, placing eighth in the men's standings and tenth overall in 26:52.


40 athletes finished the 2018 Little River Run 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services.

Butzin and Price repeat in Reed Bingham

Reed Bingham State ParkThe Little River flows through South Georgia, eventually adding its waters to the Withlacoochee River near Valdosta. Sometimes it shrinks to a trickle, other times it swells with floodwaters and covers the trails in Reed Bingham State Park. Through all of its transformations, it remains the Little River.


Reed Bingham State Park has an annual footrace that changes nearly as much as the Little River. It was originally a pair of trail runs in the park, a 10K and a 5K, known as the Road Kill Run and held in conjunction with Buzzard Day--a celebration of the vultures who wintered along the river. After uncounted years in that form, the Road Kill Run became a 5K road race through the park in 2012. As the Road Kill 5K, the event wandered around the calendar, held in February, April, or May during various years. In 2017 the very name of the race changed, and it became the Little River Run 5K.


But just as the Little River retains its identity through all it changes, so has the race that now takes its name from the river. You can see that in the results of the race, how the same athletes compete year after year. That was certainly the case on Saturday morning, 22 April 2017, when 2016 winner Dan Butzin returned to the race and won again, running 18:59. Likewise, the 2015 women's champ, Annie Price, came back to Reed Bingham State Park and took the 2017 women's title, placing third overall in 20:56.


Behind Valdosta's Butzin, Colquitt County High sophomore Mitchell Riley took second in 20:46. Rick Mazurkiewicz of Valdosta was the fastest master runner in the race, coming in fourth overall in 21:47.


Returning to the theme of change, Valdosta's Anne Price may have been a repeat winner, but her 20:56 set a new course record for women. Polyanna Bass of Pavo, Georgia was the first woman master and second female finisher, sixth overall in 22:31. Laura Solomon of Nashville, Georgia was third in the women's standings and ninth overall in 24:04.

Butzin and Newton are champion Road Killers

Road Kill Run800 meters.

That's how far ahead Dan Butzin was when he crossed the finish line of the Road Kill 5K in Georgia's Reed Bingham State Park on Saturday, 23 April 2016. A Valdosta, Georgia athlete, Butzin ran the 3.1-mile course through the park in 18:10. John Thomas, a Cook High School sophomore, placed second in 21:48. Tifton, Georgia's John Hall outkicked James Hawke of Sylvester, Georgia for the top master spot, 22:11 to 22:12. Hall and Hawke were third and fourth overall.


Traci Newton of Saint Simons Island, Georgia took the women's title, placing eighth overall in 25:57. Nashville, Georgia's Sarah Ray was the women's runner-up and eleventh overall in 27:33. Constance Thomas, another Nashville runner, was the top woman master and third female finisher, fourteenth overall in 27:58.


50 athletes finished the 2016 Road Kill 5K Run. The race is held annually by the Friends of Reed Bingham State Park for the benefit of the park. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia timed and scored the run.

Kelly and Price were too quick for the buzzards in the Road Kill 5K

Road Kill RunEach winter the vultures show up in Reed Bingham State Park, west of Adel, Georgia. There is a calendrical regularity to their appearance, much like the swallows arriving in Capistrano each year, only more gruesome. You can argue that one bird species is no more gruesome than another, and that nature requires carrion eaters like vultures. Vulture behaviour, however, includes urohidrosis, which is something that you'll never catch a self-respecting swallow doing. Not out in public, anyway.


The vultures may keep to a schedule, but not the annual road race in their honor, the Road Kill 5K. This year the race was on Saturday morning, 25 April 2015. In the last four years, the race has been run in three different months. The Friends of Reed Bingham State Park should hire one of the park's vultures to keep their calendar.


Another change in this year's race was that Lake Park, Georgia, distance runner Ryan Kelly set a new course record. The Valdosta High cross-country coach ran a winning time of 17:59 for the 3.1 miles through the park, breaking the 2011 record of 18:34. Cook Middle School eighth-grader Cody Pezent finished runner-up behind Kelly with a 21:25. Bret Wagenhorst of Tifton, Georgia, was the fastest master runner in the park that morning, placing third overall in 21:42.


Valdosta, Georgia, athlete Anne Price was the first woman in the 2015 Road Kill 5K, finishing seventh overall in 25:26. Angela Pezent of Adel, Georgia was the women's runner-up and top woman master, placing eighth overall in 25:50.


54 athletes finished the 2015 Road Kill Run 5K. The race is conducted by the Friends of Reed Bingham State Park for the benefit of the park. Finish line and timing services were provided by A Course/Line, LLC of Valdosta, Georgia.

Kelly and Page winners in Buzzard Day 5K at Reed Bingham State Park

Road Kill RunReed Bingham State Park opened in South Georgia near Adel during 1958, but before then the vultures were already visiting the area each winter. Runners began annual visits some time after the park was established, but still more than a few years ago. In addition to being newcomers compared to the vultures, the runners weren't as consistent. Sometimes they came in February, sometimes in May. Sometimes they ran a 10K, sometimes a 5K. Sometimes they ran on the trails, sometimes on the roads. Whatever the date or distance, they came for Road Kill Run.


In 2014, the Road Kill Run was held on 22 February after two years of May race dates. As in the previous two years, the race was a 5K on USATF certified course GA11076WC. This time around Ryan Kelly--the Valdosta Middle School cross-country coach from Lake Park, Georgia--won the race, posting a time of 18:51 for the 3.1-mile tour of the park. Adel master runner Sean McConnell finished second behind Kelly in 19:34. Another master runner, Bret Wagenhorst of Tifton, Georgia, was third in 20:32.


Ray City, Georgia, athlete Makenzee Page finished fourth overall, winning the women's competition and setting a new women's course record of 21:25. Lakeland, Georgia, master runner Tammy Hatton was the women's runner-up, placing 12th overall in 29:21.


33 athletes finished the 2014 Road Kill Run 5K. The race is conducted by the Friends of Reed Bingham State Park for the benefit of the park. Finish line and timing services were provided by A Course/Line, LLC of Valdosta, Georgia.
