Butzin and Presler win the battle at the Georgia Military College 5K

You may not know how many road races Dan Butzin has won in 2016, but it's a good number. If you are keeping track, add one more to the total--Butzin picked up another victory on Saturday morning, 25 June 2016, at the third annual Georgia Military College 5K in Valdosta, Georgia. The Valdosta distance runner ran a course record 18:38, winning the five kilometer race by more than a kilometer. Katie Presler of Valdosta was the first woman in the race, placing eighth overall in 26:02. 73 athletes finished the 3.1-mile event.


Carson Locke, an incoming frosh at Lowndes High, finished runner-up in 23:58. Andrew Caruana of the Viking Runners Club took third in 24:06.

Valdosta's Susan Riordan-Smith was the top master runner and the second female finisher in the race, placing ninth overall in 26:09. Not far behind Riordan-Smith, Jen Kuakel, another Valdosta master runner, was third in the women's standings and tenth overall in 26:13.


Proceeds of the third annual Georgia Military College 5K benefit the school's scholarship fund. A Course Line, LLC, of Valdosta provided timing and finish line services to the race.
