Norton and Toskey beat 'em all at Barnes

Early leaders of the 2012 Barnes 100 Years 5KValdosta's Barnes Drug Store first opened in 1909. If old Charles W. Barnes had started sponsoring a road race back then, it would be one of the oldest in North America. Barnes and his successors were somewhat preoccupied, though, with building up the business into Barnes Healthcare Services, still based in Valdosta but with locations in three different states. It wasn't until 2009 and the 100th anniversary of the business that Barnes Healthcare got around to hosting a footrace on the streets of Valdosta, the Barnes 100 Years 5K. The event has continued to be held each year during Barnes' second century, and the fourth annual race took place on Saturday, 14 July 2012.

Nathan NortonFrom Barnes' Valdosta store on South Patterson, 80 runners started west on Savannah Street, soon turning north onto Oak Street. By 800 meters three runners were well out in front of the rest of the field--Nathan Norton of Americus, Caleb Coil of Lowndes High, and Tyler Thurman of Lowndes High. Norton pushed the pace, and the leaders dropped Thurman. Around the halfway point, where the race turned east onto Brookwood Drive, Norton had opened up a 30 meter gap on Coil. Norton continued to widen his lead as the runners headed back south on Oak Street. Thurman moved into second, catching a fading coil. By the time the race arrived back at Barnes Drugs, Norton was 130 meters ahead, crossing the finish line first in 18:29. Thurman took second in 18:58, while coil was third in 19:16. Kaleb Heninger of Fitzgerald, Georgia placed fourth in 19:29. The fastest master in the race was Valdosta's Rick Mazurkiewicz, finishing fifth overall in 19:59.

Lauren ToskeyLeesburg, Georgia runners Lauren Toskey and Ashley Toskey led the women at the halfway mark, with Lauren a few steps ahead. Valdosta's Aubrey Suddarth was not far behind. But the only thing that changed during the second half of the race was the distance between the runners, and Lauren Toskey was the first woman back to Barnes Drugs, finishing twelfth overall in 23:23. Ashely Toskey was the women's runner-up, placing thirteenth overall in 23:40. Suddarth held on to the third women's spot, running 24:03 for 18th. The fourth woman across the finish line was the first master woman, Valdosta's Debbie Green, 21st overall in 24:43.

80 athletes completed the 5K, up from last year's roster of 67 finishers. Another six people finished the one-mile fun run.
