It was an All-Salgado show at Flat Rock Park in Columbus, Georgia on Monday evening, 24 July 2017. First, Columbus High senior Alex Salgado won the sixth annual Flat Rock 5K by half a kilometer, running 17:33. Then, in the same race, Columbus High alumna Alina Salgado took the women's title, placing eighth overall in 21:22.For Alex Salgado, it was a stunning improvement on his previous outings in the Flat Rock Park race. In 2015 he had placed ninth in 20:53, while in 2016 he was fourth in 20:10. His winning time of 17:33 left those old marks behind; it was more in line with the times Salgado ran during the autumn of 2016 when he won seven races for the Columbus High cross-country team, including the GHSA Region 1-4A championship. Steve Darwin was second in the Flat Rock, running 19:31. Jake Eishen, a senior on the Harris County High cross-country team, edged Eduardo Valdivia for third, 19:37 to 19:39. Valdivia was the fastest master runner in the race.
Not far behind Alina Salgado at 21:31, Devin Helms was second in the women's standings and ninth overall. Helms is a junior at Harris County High where she runs for the school's cross-country team. Katie May was the third woman and eleventh overall in 21:47. Melissa House was the first woman master and fifteenth female finisher, 53rd overall in 27:47.
Lightning Sports Racing, Inc., timed the Columbus Road Runners' 2017 Flat Rock Park 5K. 145 athletes finished the race.
