On the streets of Gainesville, Gator duo Cade Monk and Josh Stern battle for the Melon Run title

Watermelon was being grown in Spain's colonies in Florida by 1576. Elsewhere in America, 200 years later, the Declaration of Independence was signed. It's unknown whether or not the Signers celebrated with slices of watermelon. Regardless of what was consumed in 1776, in Gainesville, Florida the Florida Track Club marks Independence Day with the Melon Run. On Monday morning, 4 July 2022, Cade Monk won the 44th annual Jack Gamble Melon Run, outkicking runner-up Josh Stern 15:31 to 15:33. Haley Hasty, a former UConn cross-country runner, was the first woman to finish the three-mile race around Westside Park, placing tenth overall in 17:31.

The race for the 2022 Melon Run title was an intramural affair--both Monk and Stern are member of the University of Florida cross-country team. Nearly 200 meters behind the two Gator distance runners, Tariq Fullerton of Gainesville was third in 16:08. Leonardo Canete of Tallahassee was the first master runner in the race, placing sixth overall in 16:56. It was Canete's second race of the long Independence Day weekend; two days earlier and 300 miles away he was the top master runner in Columbus, Georgia's Big Dog Heatwave Five Mile.

Gainesville's Betsy Suda was the first woman master in the Melon Run, placing second to Hasty in the women's standings and eleventh overall in 18:10. Suda is a five-time women's champ of the Melon Run, having won in 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, and 2018. 2022 was her first Melon Run as a master runner. Katie Avery of Bonita Springs, Florida was the third woman in the 2022 race, coming in fifteenth overall in 18:17.
