Leonardo Canete and Rebecca Stratton rule the ravines at the Panther Prowl 5K

At the right time of spring, Ravine Gardens State Park in Palatka, Florida is covered with azalea blossoms. The rest of the year you'll have to be content with its greenery and rugged topography. The changes in elevation are not what you'd expect less than 30 miles from Florida's Atlantic coast. 57 athletes got a taste of those hills on Saturday morning, 23 July 2022, during the Panther Prowl 5K. Tallahassee, Florida master runner Leonardo Canete was the class of the field, winning the race in 18:26. Fifteen-year-old Rebecca Stratton of Orange Park, Florida was the first woman in the race, placing third overall in 24:10.

It was Canete's thirteenth race win of 2022 and his second in a row--just a week earlier, he had placed first at Gulf Winds Track Club's Maclay Gardens 9K Trail Race in Tallahassee. Teague Dunagan finished second to Canete in the Palatka race, running 22:54. Dunagan is a rising eighth-grader at Saint Johns Country Day School, where he races cross-country for the Spartans. Master runner Dave Hoock was the third male finisher and fourth overall in 25:37.

Women's champs Rebecca Stratton is also a cross-country runner at Saint John Country Day School, where she is a rising sophomore. Another Saint John Country Day Spartan, rising junior Sofia Conde, outkicked Noelle Harwell for the second spot in the women's standings, both runners clocked in 26:13. Conde and Harwell were fifth and sixth overall, with Harwell finishing as the top woman master.


Milestone Race Authority timed the 2022 Panther Prowl 5K. The race was a fundraiser for the Palatka Pop Warner football league.
