Alexander Croy |
Wyatt Townsend grabbed the lead right after the 8:00 AM ET start of the 8K. A junior on the Chiles High cross-country team, Townsend was eight seconds ahead at the mile mark. Alexander Croy pursued, with Chris O'Kelley, Matt Mizereck, and master runner Leonardo Canete trailing. Townsend set the pace for most of the first loop of the two-loop course before being overtaken by 21-year-old Croy.
"Probably about halfway," said Croy.
With just over a mile to go, Croy had a few steps on Townsend. Chris O'Kelley was well behind the two, but he was closing.
Chris O'Kelley |
"I caught Wyatt about half a mile out," said O'Kelley, who was racing the Madness for the first time since 2009, back in his high school days. "I got in contact with him [Croy] on the last hill, but he just held me off."
"I did notice that there was someone coming up behind me near the end," recounted Croy. "But then I began my kick."
That kick trumped O'Kelley's charge, and Croy crossed the finish line in a winning 28:16. O'Kelley was a close runner-up in 28:20. Townsend, the early leader, took third in 28:31. Leonardo Canete was the first master runner in the race and third overall in 29:46.
Katie Sherron |
Alexander Croy entered the Madness with a long resume of experience as a harrier, having run cross-country for South Lake High, Lake Sumter State College, and the University of Florida Running Club. On the women's side, Katie Sherron had her own impressive cross-country curriculum vitae; most notably she was the 2021 USATF National Club Cross-Country Women's Master Champion. Sherron was also the defending women's champion in the Madness 8K, as well as the women's course-record holder. She successfully defended her Madness title, finishing more than half a mile ahead of the next woman while setting a new course record of 30:51, knocking more than half a minute off her old mark.
Sheryl Rosen, a four-time winner of the women's 8K title at the Madness, finished runner-up to Sherron in 34:41, placing 28th overall. Teresea Meli, a senior on the cross-country team at Community Christan School, was third in the women's standings and 41st overall in 36:49. Another high school harrier, Maclay sophomore Kassidy Moninger, was the fourth female and 54th overall in 38:55.
