A fast Breakfast for Jonah Blay and Katie Sherron at the Gulf Winds Track Club Mile

In spite of its name, Gulf Winds Track Club mostly organizes road races, with a few cross-country and trail events thrown in. Among those, a one-mile run is usually an appendage or afterthought--the one-mile fun run at the Tallahassee Turkey Trot, or the one-mile kid's race at the Springtime Road Race. But once a year, the Tallahassee, Florida club returns to the track for the Gulf Winds Track Club Mile at the Breakfast On The Track--a showcase for that venerable 5,280-foot event of frantic distance running. The 26th running of the GWTC Mile was Saturday morning, 10 August 2024 on the Maclay School track.

Jonah Blay won the 26th annual four lapper, covering the mile in 4:47.24. Master runner Katie Sherron was the first woman in the mile for the fourth year in a row, placing ninth overall in 5:07.50.

When you have more than a hundred athletes who want to run a one-mile race on the track, you can't just line them all up and fire the starting pistol. Instead, you have to run the race in sections. Of the six sections of the mile at the Breakfast On The Track, the first section was the fastest. Jonah Blay, an alum of the Chile High Timberwolf cross-country team, was in that section. Blay hadn't run the GWTC Mile since 2019, the year before he started running for the Timberwolves. Nevertheless, he took command of the race right away, well ahead by the end of the first lap, where he was on schedule to break 4:40. Blay didn't maintain that pace, but he didn't need to. Never challenged, Blay was 40 meters ahead when he crossed the finish line in a winning 4:47.24.

Jeremy Collier, a junior-year harrier on the Community Christian School cross-country team, took second behind Blay in 4:54.56. Gabe Sivyer, another junior year high school cross-country runner, was third in 4:57.75. Leonardo Canete was the first master runner in the mile, placing seventh overall in 5:02.25.

There were three woman in the first section of the mile, but only one of them had five previous Breakfast On The Track wins--defending champ Katie Sherron. Nearly from the start, Sherron was ahead of her female rivals in the section, Madeleine Frank and master runner Megan Noonan. After four laps and 5:07.50 she had her sixth Gulf Winds Track Mile women's title. Sherron also has three of the ten fastest times by a woman at the GTWC Mile.

Madeleine Frank was the women's runner-up, placing twelfth overall in 5:17.25. Racing in the second section, Charlotte Sikes, an eighth-grader on the Swift Creek Middle School cross-country team, took third in the women's standings with a 5:36.26, good for 21st overall.
