At 7:30 AM it started to rain.
Grayton Smith |
There was a hurried announcement that the race would proceed as scheduled regardless of weather, and it did. On a wet track, Grayton Smith ran 4:53.46 to take first. Master runner Dr. Katie Sherron was the first woman in the race, placing fourth overall in 5:06.88.
The Breakfast On The Track is a track meet featuring one event--the mile. There were six sections of that race; the overall winners both ran in the first section. Grayton Smith finished the first lap of that section in the lead, with Jarod Hoffman a few steps back. After two laps, Hoffman was a few more steps back. By the end of the third lap, Smith had a fifty-meter lead. Hoffman didn't give up any more ground on the fourth and final lap, nor did he gain any. Smith crossed the line fifty meters ahead in a winning 4:53.46, the only athlete to break 5:00 that morning. Hoffman was runner-up in 5:01.79. Zach DeVeau was third in 5:04.44.
Jarod Hoffman |
DeVeau happens to be married to the fourth-place finisher, women's champ Katie Sherron. That wasn't unnoticed by Sherron.
"I ran 5:07, a second slower than last year," said Sherron. "And Zach beat me. He's been training for a month, saying, 'I'm going to beat you, I'm going to beat you.'"
Katie Sherron |
Aside from the family drama, Sherron was the first woman in the Gulf Winds Track Club Mile for the third year in a row, and her 5:06.88 was the eighth-fastest time ever run by a woman at the Breakfast On The Track.
Swift Creek Middle School seventh-grader Charlotte Sikes took second in the women's standings, placing sixteenth overall in 5:34.78--a twenty-second improvement on her performance in the 2022 Gulf Winds Track Club Mile. Racing in the second section, Megan Noonan edged Emma-Claire Tanenbaum for the third women's spot, 6:02.34 to 6:02.97. Noonan was 30th overall and Tanenbaum 31st.
Charlotte Sikes |
135 athletes finished the 2023 Gulf Winds Track Club Mile at the Breakfast on the Track. Gulf Winds Track Club chip-timed the mile and served post-race pancakes.
