Oscar Lopez Pech and Ella Burnett open cross-country season with a win on the Valdosta roads

Each year, at the advent of cross-country season in South Georgia, you can look for the Blazer Cross-Country 5K Road Race on the streets of Valdosta, Georgia. The seventeenth annual edition of that race was Saturday morning, 19 August 2023, and Oscar Lopez Pech of Mexico took first in the 3.1-mile run with a 17:34. Ella Burnett, a senior on the Valwood High cross-country team, placed first on the women's side, finishing fifteenth overall in 22:55.


Another prep harrier, Valdosta High junior Patrick Wallace, was second overall in 18:13. Wallace's teammate, junior Brandon Reyes, came in third with a 19:32. David Burnett of Valdosta was the first master runner in the race, placing fourth overall in 19:43.


Valdosta athlete Tamara Martin was the first woman master and the women's runner-up, placing eighteenth overall in 23:30. Nashville, Georgia master runner Laura Solomon took third in the women's standings, coming in 25th overall in 25:52.


63 athletes finished the 2023 Blazer Cross-Country 5K. A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta timed the race and provided finish line services. Proceeds of the event went to support the Valdosta State University cross-country program.
