Record times trump temperatures at TRBC 10K

Stanley LintonYou wouldn't guess it from the grumbling about the cold, but temperatures at the 2013 Thomasville Baptist Church 10K were above freezing, and well above the record low for March 2 of 20 °F. But while there were no weather records set at the eighth annual race, new running records were established. Florida State University NROTC midshipman Stanley Linton ran an event record 34:00 for the men, and Tallahassee lawyer Sheryl Rosen ran 38:40 to break her own three-year-old women's record for the race. Rosen is the only woman to have broken 40 minutes on the Thomasville Road Baptist Church 10K course. The number of finishers in the 10K, 249, was just shy of the reocrd 252 that completed the 10K in 2009.


Thomasville Road Baptist Church Road RaceThe race started a few minutes later on Saturday morning than the scheduled 8:30 AM post time, leaving over 500 athletes entered in the 10K and the concurrently run 5K shivering on the starting line. Eventually the runners were set loose, and the field charged away from Thomasville Road Baptist Church and onto Thomasville Road itself. On Hermitage Road, just before the end of the first mile, Linton was well in the lead, followed in sequence by Nate Kaiser, Roger Schmidt, and Gabriel Albaladejo. After that, all that changed was the distance between the competitors. Linton went on to a 34:00 victory, with Kaiser second in 34:55, Schmidt third in 36:19, and Albaladejo fourth in 36:56. Tony Guillen finished fifth with a 37:53, the fastest master runner in the race. Guillen had also been the top master in the 10K in 2010.


Sheryl Rosen2010 was also Sheryl Rosen's last year in FSU Law School as well as the year that she set the women's record of 39:03 for the Thomasville Road Baptist Church 10K. Now a practicing lawyer, she was back at the race in 2013. Rosen rocketed to the front of the women's field almost immediately, getting 20 seconds ahead of the next runner, Katie Showman, before the end of the first mile. Rosen stretched out that lead, finishing the race more than a quarter mile ahead of the runner-up with a 38:40, good for 11th place overall, the women's title, and a new women's course record. Katie Showman was the second women finisher, placing 22nd overall in 40:34. The third woman in was Micah Adriani, 23rd overall in 41:10. Defending women's champion Mary Anne Grayson place fourth among the women, taking the women's master title and finishing 34th overall in 43:08.

Former Marist College Red Fox (c/o 2009) distance runner John Keenan easily handled the 5K field, running a 16:46 to win the shorter race. Don Bryan was top master and runner up in 19:29. The first female finisher in the 5K was Sheri Poskanzer, 8th overall in 23:09.
