Baun and Green are swift in the streets on Memorial Day

American FlagsOn the streets of Valdosta, Georgia, Matthew Baun won the eighth annual Memorial Day 5K, running 18:05. Valdosta master runner Debbie Green won the women's title for the second year in a row and the third time in four years, placing sixteenth overall in 22:25. 99 athletes finished the 3.1-mile race.


Close behind Baun, 2015 Memorial Day 5K champion Ryan Kelly battled with Dan Butzin of Valdosta for second place, with Kelly getting the decision 18:12 to 18:13. David Monds of Quitman, Georgia took the top master spot, finishing eighth overall in 20:14.


Brianna Prinsloo of Hahira, Georgia was second to Green in the women's standings and eighth overall in 20:14. Valdosta's Lauren Bewley edged Katie Lancaster, another Valdosta runner, for third in the women's division, 24:35 to 24:40.


A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia timed the race and provided finish line services.

Baun and Schloemer bake some fresh records in the Bun Run

Bun RunAt the sixth annual Break Bread Bun Run 5K in Valdosta, Georgia, on Saturday morning, 11 July 2015, both Matthew Baun and Kyle Kroger ran faster than the old event record. Baun and Kroeger were also the first two runners ever to go under 18:00 in the race. But it was Baun who was the swifter of the two, and he won the 3.1-mile race in 17:49. Erica Schloemer lowered the event record on the women's side as well, running 21:10 to finish eighth overall and take the women's title.


The top two Break Bread runners were both high school athletes, with Baun looking forward to his junior year at Valdosta High and Kroger anticipating his senior year at Elder High in Cincinnati, Ohio. The younger runner was the faster, though, with Baun taking first in 17:49 and Kroeger second in 17:59. The previous record holder and defending Bun Run champion, Ryan Kelly, was third in 19:14. Valdosta High rising sophomore Quin McGlamery finished fourth in 20:05. The top master in the race was Valdosta's Rick Mazurkiewicz, fifth overall in 20:13.


High school talent also prevailed on the women's side when Erica Schloemer--soon to be a sophomore at Seton High in Cincinnati, Ohio--finished more than a minute and a half ahead of the next female athlete and trimming a second off of the women's event record. The previous record of 21:11 had been set by Alice Smoot in 2012 on the Wood Valley course. The women's runner up in this year's race was Anne Price of Valdosta, who finished ninth overall in 22:46. Valdosta athlete Debbie Green was the top woman master and third female finisher in the race, placing eleventh overall in 23:22. Just seven days earlier Green had won the women's title in Valdosta's Independence Day 5K.


38 athletes finished the 2015 Break Bread Bun Run 5K. Finish line and timing services were provided by A Course / Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia.

Kelly and Thornhill break the tape at 'Dosta Dash

In 2015, the annual 'Dosta Dash 10K moved on the calendar, becoming a February race. Change has been the only constant in the eleven-year history of the Valdosta, Georgia, event. Over the years, the 'Dosta Dash has also been a December race and a March race. It has been an untimed holiday run run, and a fiercely competitive 15K. One thing stayed constant this year, though. In 2014 Ryan Kelly won the 'Dosta Dash 10K. On 28 February 2015 the Lake Park, Georgia, athlete won the 6.2-mile race again, running 37:30.


Valdosta master runner Rick Mazurkiewicz finished runner-up with a 41:47. Randy Maples, another Valdosta master runner, was third in 45:06. Alison Thornhill took the 2015 'Dosta Dash 10K women's title, placing fourth overall in 46:01. Amber Elam was second in the women's standings, coming in fifth overall in 47:37. Kelly Yates of Valdosta was the top woman master and fifth woman finisher, placing tenth overall in 55:01.

Another constant over the years at the Valdosta Junior Service League's 'Dosta Dash has been Alice Smoot. The Valdosta master runner has won a women's title at the 'Dosta Dash in five of the last eight years, 2007 to 2015. No one else has wins at each of the three different 'Dosta Dash distances; 5K, 10K, and 15K. At the 2015 event, Smoot added another 5K women's title to her collection, running 22:12 and finishing seventh overall. Valdosta High sophomore Matthew Baun was the overall winner in the 5K, however. The Wildcat cross-country runner finished more than 400 meters ahead of the next runner, posting a 17:34 for the 3.1-mile race. Valdosta athlete Brian Rohrbach was second in 18:50. Steve Plymale of Valdosta was the fastest master runner in the 5K, placing fifth overall in 21:27.


34 athletes finished the 2015 'Dosta Dash 10K, with another 41 completing the 5K. Timing and finish line services for the two races and the one-mile fun run were provided by A Course / Line, LLC of Valdosta.

In 2004 and 2005 the event was an untimed December fun run named the
Jingle Bell Run.
From 2006 to 2008 the event was called the Jingle Bell Classic.
In 2010 the VJSL moved the race to March, renaming it the 'Dosta Dash.

South Georgia preps start cross country season in Freedom Park

Team TrophiesYou can't see the state line dividing Georgia and Florida. It's a legal entity, with origins in the 200-year-old Treaty of San Lorenzo, negotiated between the United State of America and the Empire of Spain. Andrew Ellicott was supposed to survey the boundary, but he ran into Muskogean speakers who were hostile to the notion that their land was being divvied up by two outside parties. Ellicott built a mound at the headwaters of the St. Marys River, declared that the boundary ran from there to the confluence of the Flint and the Chattahoochee Rivers, then went home. Nearly a century went by before the politicians and the lawyers were done disputing the location of the invisible line.


Between the Flint and the St Marys there isn't a wall or a mountain range or an expanse of water marking the border between Georgia and Florida. Nevertheless, if you were on the Florida side of the line on Saturday morning, 16 August 2014, then you were still waiting for high school cross-country season to begin, weeks ahead. But if you were on the Georgia side, your wait was over. In Freedom Park north of Valdosta, Georgia, the season was very much under way at Valdosta High's Wildcat Cross Country Invitational.


The Wildcats played rude hosts in the first interscholastic event, the high school boys 5K. That 3.1-mile race around the park started at 8:00 AM, right after a community 5K. Scoring 29 points, the Valdosta boys opened their 2014 cross country season with a win, as did their top runner, sophomore Matthew Baun. Running 18:01, Baun finished nearly 400 meters ahead of Upson Lee's first runner, senior Feybian Matthews (2nd, 19:17). The Upson Lee Knights took second in the team standings with 42 points, with the Lee County Trojans scoring 58 to place third. The Pelham Hornets had only three athletes in the race, two short of the minimum five needed for a team score.

At 8:30 AM the high scool girls' 5K followed the boys' race. This time Upson Lee would take the team title. Led by Abigail Manley's 23:47 first place finish, the Knights put all five of their scorers in the top eleven to total a winning 35 points. Monica Webb of Pelham finished runner-up in 23:59, but Valdosta put their first five runners across the line while Pelham was still waiting for their fourth, giving the Wildcats 52 points and second place. Pelham was third with 59 points. Lee County had strong performances by sophomore Ansley Cain (3rd, 24:26) and frosh Ramsay Miller (4th, 24:30), but the Trojans didn't have enough finishers to have a team score.


Valdosta, Pelham, and Lee County are scheduled to meet again on Saturday morning, 23 August 2014, at the Pelham High Hornet Invitational. The Valdosta High girls are the defending champions in their race at the Hornet Invite.

Hisham Heikal and Carson Locke took the first two places for the Viking Runners in the middle school boys' mile-and-a-half race, running 9:20 and 9:22. After Andrew Carauna took sixth in 10:20, the Vikings' team prospects looked good. But Lee County also put three runners in the top ten--Reese Fye (4th, 9:51.6), Ben Phillips (9th, 10:56), and Daniel Gyorfi (10th, 11:10). In the end, the team championship was decided by only a single point, with the Viking Runners narrowly prevailing over Lee County, 38 to 39. Valdosta Middle School was a close third with 48 points.

The Viking Runners Club also took the first two spots in the middle school girls mile-and-a-half, with Kelsey Morse and Eryn Wilkey going one-two in 9:35 and 10:49. But the Vikings had no other runners in the top ten, and Lee County had four, starting with third place finisher Sheridan Lowry at 11:20, and including Kayla Early (5th 11:41), Caroline Taylor (7th, 12:02), and Vicki Roberts (9th, 12:14). When Vanessa Favela-Parra (17th, 14:01) crossed the finish line for Lee County, her team had 37 points and the Wildcat Invitational team title. Valdosta Middle School was second with 44 points, and the Viking Runners third with 50.

Baun and Smoot set the streets afire in Valdosta's Fire Up 5K

Pink Fire EngineMatthew Baun got another 5K victory and Valdosta, Georgia, got another road race with the first running of the Fire Up 5K on 7 June 2014. Baun, a rising sophomore on the cross-country team at Valdosta High School, won the race by about half a kilometer, running 18:06. Colquitt County High graduating senior Steven Johnson II was second in 20:10. Third place went to Gareth Pyle of Thomasville, Georgia, in 22:01. Valdosta's Quin McGlanery took fourth in 22:55.


Valdosta master runner Alice Smoot was the fastest woman in the Fire Up 5K, placing fifth overall in 23:07. Debbie Sizemore Green, another Valdosta master runner, was second in the women's standings, coming in seventh overall in 23:30. Eleanor Clark edged Leigh Jordan for the third woman's spot, both runners clocked in 27:18. Clark and Jordan were tenth and eleventh overall respectably.


33 athletes finished the 3.1-mile race, which started and finished at Valdosta's McKey Park. Race proceeds went to support the start up of the Scintilla Charter Academy.

Mary Alice Smoot's 19:48 is a new mark in the Valdosta Labor Day 5K

Labor DayMatthew Baun has started his freshman season of cross-country at Valdosta High School, and Mary Alice Smoot has started her senior season of cross-country at Valwood School. Nevertheless, both harriers took some time away from the trails to score wins at Valdosta's fifth annual Labor Day 5K on Monday, 2 September 2013.


Baun was the overall winner, finding a way to beat Ryan Kelly after losing to the Valdosta Middle School cross-country coach 16 days earlier at the "Cross-Country Is Fun!" 5K in Valdosta. Shrugging off the results of that earlier race, Baun won the Labor Day 5K in 18:15, while Kelly finished second-best in 18:24. Mary Alice Smoot was third across the finish line, taking the women's title and establishing a new women's record of 19:48 for the Labor Day race.


Valdosta runner Tom Phillips was the fastest master runner in the race, coming in fourth overall in 20:45. Alice Smoot of Valdosta was the top master woman, running 21:53 to finish third in the female standings behind Mary Alice Smoot and ten-year-old Kelsey Morse (7th, 21:33).


89 athletes finished the race. Finish line and timing services were provided by A Course/Line, LLC, of Valdosta, Georgia.
