The Price is Right--Tyler Price's 16:11 wins the Memorial Day 5K

Only Photo of Tyler Pricea day after spending Saturday clearing roots and branches from the new cross-country course in Apalachee Regional Park, Tyler Price laced on his racing shoes and outran the field at the third annual Memorial Day 5K Night Race in Bainbridge, Georgia on 25 May 2009. Price, a member of the Florida State University Cross-Country team, took the lead shortly after the start and never relinquished it, clocking 16:11 to finish well ahead of his nearest challenger, Kyle Harris of Bainbridge, who completed the 3.1-mile course in 17:57. The top master finisher was Brian Hickey, who finished third overall. In the women's competition the top runner was Bainbridge's Erica Pemberton with a time of 23:16. The top master woman was Julie Harris of Bainbridge.

The race is directed by Bainbridge High School cross-country coach Mandi O'Mara and is a fund-raiser for the BHS cross-country team. The course loops through the neighborhoods south of Bainbridge Memorial Hospital and Manor, and is completely flat after a slight dip in the first half mile. The course appears to be accurate, but lacks USATF certification, so you can't really be sure. The one-mile mark was placed in the wrong location, which was annoying. On the plus side, there were aid stations at each mile and the course was well marked. There is a lot to recommend this race, and nothing wrong with it that can't be easily fixed.
