Get to the church on time? No problem for Larson and Sherron

Eric LarsonAt 8:30 AM in Tallahassee on Saturday morning, 1 March 2014, there was a slight chill in the air. It was starting time for the ninth annual Thomasville Road Baptist Church road race. By just after 9:00 AM it was shaping up into a sunny, warm day--the kind of weather that makes your friends up north, locked in late winter blizzards, jealous enough to stop talking to you. That was about the time that Eric Larson, winner of the Thomasville Road Baptist Church 10K, crossed the finish line, posting a time of 34:13 for the 6.2-mile race. Tony Guillen was the top master runner in the race, coming in fourth overall in 37:48. Katie Sherron was the first woman in the race, placing tenth overall in 41:23. Thomasville's Mary Anne Grayson, the 2012 TRBC 10K women's champion, was the first woman master for sixth year in a row; this time around she was 19th overall in 44:29.


Eric LarsonThe race started and finished at the church, as did a concurrently run 5K. Eric Larson was out like a bolt, though, outdistancing 10K runners and 5K runners alike. Only Vince Molosky tried to stay with Larson. Molosky had won the TRBC 10K in 2007 and 2010. At the mile mark he was only two second behind Larson. But when Molosky won his first TRBC 10K, Eric Larson had been a state champion distance runner at Pensacola Washington High School. The year that Molosky had earned a second TRBC title, Larson was in the middle of a four-year career of competing in cross-country and track for Florida Southern College. Larson put that experience on display, running away from Molosky and building up a lead of nearly 300 meters on his way back to the church and a 34:13 victory. Molosky was runner-up in 35:12. Zach Deveau finished third in 36:55. Tony Guillen beat out fellow master runner Sean Hudson for fourth place, 37:48 to 38:05.


Katie SherronRenee Cox led the women's field through the first mile, with Jillian Heddasus a few steps behind. Thirty meters back, Katie Sherron stalked them both. Sherron overtook Heddaeus first, then Cox. After taking the lead, Sherron took command of the race, building up a lead of nearly 400 meters and leaving Cox and Heddaeus to squabble over second place. Sherron came in ninth overall, winning the women's title in 41:23. Cox was runner-up on the women's side, placing 15th in 43:01. Heddaeus was the third woman finisher, 16th overall in 43:12. The fourth woman finisher and first woman master was Mary Anne Grayson, 19th overall in 44:29.

Paul GuyasLane Williams started fast, leading the TRBC 5K in the early going. Running in second, Paul Guyas gave Williams plenty of line, but then reeled him in late in the race. With about 800 meters to go Guyas broke away from Williams then ran home to win in 19:02. Williams finished runner-up in 19:20. Tim Unger was the first master runner in the 3.1-mile race, placing third overall in 19:49. Tallahassee master runner Julie Clark was the first woman finisher, tenth overall in 23:54.
