Godwin, Webb, and fast high school harriers dominate the Wildlife Run

HornetDuring cross country season you don't expect to see many high school harriers at a road race. Despite the season, though, there were mostly cross country runners at the Pelham Wildlife Festival 5K on Saturday morning, 3 October 2015--so many that the race looked like a high school meet. If it had been a meet, Pelham High boys would have won, putting six runners in the top ten. But it wasn't a Pelham High Hornet who crossed the finish line first, it was Westwood Schools sophomore Ford Godwin.

Godwin won the 3.1-mile race in 19:40, comfortably ahead of runner-up Austin Hornsby. Hornsby, a Pelham High junior, ran 19:49. He was followed across the finish line by three more Pelham Hornet harriers--senior Daniel Smith (3rd, 20:44), senior Paul Woods (4th, 21:00), and junior Jacob Watkins (5th,22:20).

It was the same situation on the women's side, but even more so. The Pelham girls would have put up a perfect 15-points score, taking the first five places. Hornet junior Monica Webb was the first female finisher, placing sixth overall in 23:18. The next four places in the women's standings also belonged to Pelham harriers--sophomore Lila Maloy (11th, 24:29), frosh Marlette Fulcher (13th, 28:35), frosh Cynthia Stokes (14th, 28:40), and junior Winter Wainwright (16th, 29:04). Leesburg master runner Leesburg master runner Anna Wade interrupted the flow of Pelham High athletes by taking the sixth spot in the women's standings; Wade was 17th overall in 30:09.

36 athletes finished the 2015 Pelham Wildlife Run 5K.

Victories at the Hornet Nest for the Bainbridge boys and Thomas County Central girls

HornetWhatever the GHSA calendar may say, high school cross country in Southwest Georgia doesn't start until the annual Pelham Hornet Cross Country Invitational. This year the region's harriers raced in that opener on Saturday morning, 22 August 2015. The Bainbridge High Bearcats took the boy's title for the third year in a row scoring a nearly-unbeatable 30 points, while Bearcat sophomore Poncherella Leonard won individual honors with a 17:34. On the girls' side Thomas County Central totaled 75 points to reign as the top team. Colquitt County sophomore Elizabeth Funderburk was the winning individual in the girls' 5K, running 21:04.

The high school competition at the Invitational opened with the girls' 5K. The race was all Elizabeth Funderburk's; the Colquitt County Packer sophomore's 21:04 put her more than 150 meters ahead of the next athlete. However, Funderburk was the Packer's only runner in the top 20, which didn't bode well for the Colquitt County's chances in the team standings. Meanwhile, the Thomas County Central Yellowjackets not only had sophomore Cara Eaton finish second in 21:48, but also had sophomore Jinglei Horchler crack the top ten with a 24:20 ninth-place finish. The Yellowjackets put four runners in the top fifteen, then sealed victory and a 75-point total with a 41st-place 29:14 showing from junior Logan Covington. Close behind the Yellowjackets, Tift County edged Lee County for second, 81 to 82. Tift County was led by sophomore Ashlee Golden (7th, 23:56), and Lee County by junior Ansley Cain (11th, 24:32).

Team Standings, High School Girls 5K
    1. Thomas County Central, 75
    2. Tift County, 81
    3. Lee County, 82
    4. Bainbridge, 93
    5. Worth County, 107
    6. Colquitt County, 110
    7. Pelham, 158
    8. Valdosta, 171
    9. Cairo, 258

Top Ten, High School Girls 5K
    1. 21:03.13 ~ Elizabeth Funderburk (Colquitt County) 10
    2. 21:47.23 ~ Cara Eaton (Thomas County Central) 10
    3. 22:18.56 ~ Kennedy Rutherford (Worth County)

    8. 24:15.53 ~ Madeline Mathis (Valdosta) 11
    9. 24:19.89 ~ Jinglei Horchler (Thomas County Central) 10
    10. 24:29.69 ~ Monica Webb (Pelham) 11

The bad news for everyone in the boys' 5K was that an error by the timing company running the finish line made it impossible to compile complete results for the race. The bad news for everyone but Bainbridge was that you didn't need complete results to tell that the Bearcats had won again. Even worse news for everyone but Bainbridge was that the Bearcats took the top two places in the race with a sophomore and a freshman--Poncharella Leonard (1st, 17:34) and Caleb Harris (2nd, 18:07)--two athletes that runners in the area could be chasing for the next three years. That one-two finish started Bainbridge toward a winning total of 30 points. Behind the third-place 18:43 finish of senior Sam Gelabert, Thomas County Central placed second with 40 points.

Tift Middle Schools' eighth-grader Emily Golden was dominating in the middle school girls' two mile, running 13:28 and finishing more than 250 meters ahead of the next runner, Brianna Zupko (2nd, 14:37) of Worth County. Aside from Golden, Tift had three other athletes in the top ten--sixth-graders Caroline Vickers (6th, 15:35) and Ainsley Toews (8th, 15:42), plus seventh-grader Noelia Sandoval (10th, 16:05). Eighth-grader Alexandria Vaughn (11th, 16:15) wasn't far behind, giving her team a total of 32 points and the win. Led by sixth-grader Emily Phillips (3rd, 14:50), Lee County was seocond in the team standings with 85 points, just ahead of the 91 scored by third-place Valdosta.

    10. 16:04.45 ~ Noelia Sandoval (Tift) 7

Valdosta eighth-grader won the boys' two mile with a 12:29, just ahead of the 12:39 posted by runner-up Bryce Stephens, a Tift seventh-grader. However, it was the Lee County boys who won the team title. Lee County put sixth-grader Josh Macklin (4th, 12:55), eighth-grader Ben Phillips (5th, 13:03), and eighth-grader Walker Pinson (8th, 13:24) in the top ten. Four more runners Lee County runners made the top twenty, including scorers Will Tomlinson (11th, 13:58) and Robbie Collins (15th, 14:17), both in the seventh grade. It was enough to give Lee County a winning total of 43 points. Valdosta was a distance second with 97 points. Bainbridge squeaked by Thomas County Central for third, 106 to 107, Bainbridge led by eighth-grader Stokes Moore (3rd, 12:49) and Central by eighth-grader Brandon Hopper (14th, 14:10).

Whether their season ends with the Georgia State Middle School Cross Country Championships in Cochran on 17 October 2015 or the GHSA State Cross Country Championships in Carrollton on 7 November 2015, all of these athletes have a lot of racing ahead of them this fall.

Valdosta girls and Bainbridge boys repeat in the heat at Hornet Invitational

HornetThe Pelham High Hornets cross country team was back in 2014, and so was the Pelham Hornet Cross Country Invitational on Saturday morning, 23 August 2014. Also returning were the Valdosta High girls, who repeated as Hornet Invitational champs. Likewise, the Bainbridge High boys were repeat winners in their race, led by the successful title defense of BHS senior Chase Harris.

It may not have been the hottest day of the year in Pelham, Georgia, but if there were a warmer morning no one wanted to remember it. Temperatures were already approaching 90 °F at 9:30 AM when the girls were scheduled to start their 5K race, and the heat index was a number guaranteed to inspire depression. Albany Westover sophomore Janie Plowden shrugged off the torrid conditions, though, and won the 3.1-mile run in 22:39. Valdosta senior Leah Michael was runner-up in 23:36, but Bainbridge High answered with a third-place 24:19 finish by frosh Uriyah Davis. Thomas County Central had its own retort--sophomore Angela Cipriani fifth in 24:40. That set the tone for what would become one of those races where cross country coaches study the results for days, adding up the scores again and again. The Valdosta Wildcats did successfully defend their 2013 team title, but their total of 64 points was just one tick better than the Bainbridge Bearcats' sum of 65, and only two better than Thomas County Central's 66. Valdosta had also won the team title by a single point in 2013, though, and even coaches know that a one-point win...is a win.

The weather was even warmer by the time the high school boys ran. In spite of the heat, Valdosta sophomore Matthew Baun ran 17:33, 15 seconds faster than the 17:48 that Bainbridge's Chase Harris had run at the 2013 Hornet Invitational. Unfortunately for Baun, Harris was also at the 2014 race and he was nearly a minute faster than the previous year, winning the race in 16:51. Baun's time was good enough for second place, though, while third went to Bainbridge senior Brad Cox in 18:07. Bainbridge put two more runners in the top ten--junior Perry Waddell (5th, 18:58) and junior Brenden Greene (10th, 19:24)--giving the Bearcats 30 points and the team title. Led by junior Jerrious Dee (6th, 19:05), Thomas County Central put up 47 points to place second in the team standings. The Valdosta Wildcats were third with 85 points.

Madeline Posse of Valdosta Middle School won the middle school girls' two-mile event in 14:35. Lee County's Caroline Taylor was runner-up in 14:45, though, and Taylor's finish was the first two points in Lee County's winning total of 63. It was Lee County's second win in two Saturdays; they had also taken the team trophy home from the Valdosta Wildcat Invitational on 16 August 2014. Valdosta was second in the team standings with 67 points. Led by seventh-grader Sandy Baker (5th, 15:20), Bainbridge Middle School took third with 87 points.

Bainbridge Middle School's Caleb Harris won the middle school boys' two mile by almost a quarter of a mile, running 11:01. I haven't done the math yet, but when your fifth runner finishes while every other team still has their number three runner still on the course, I'd have to say that your team has a good chance of winning. That is exactly what Bainbridge Middle did, and they won the boys' title for the second year straight, scoring 41 points. Led by Reese Fye's third-place finish in 13:42, Lee County took second with 54 points.

Valdosta girls, Bainbridge boys take season opener in Pelham

Pelham City High School HornetsHigh school cross-country season is starting about a week earlier than usual in Florida in 2013, with opening day scheduled for August 31. But even that head start puts Florida a week behind Georgia, where the season is already under way. While the high school runners of Florida's Big Bend were looking forward to one last week of summer training, just over the state line the harriers of southwest Georgia were opening their fall campaign at the Pelham Hornet Invitational on Saturday morning, 24 August 2013.

The morning of competition at the Pelham High School Sports Complex opened with the high school girls' 5K. The Valdosta Wildcats eked out a 40 to 41 victory over the host Pelham Hornets. The margin was so close that if Valdosta's non-scoring sixth and seventh runners, Liz Kelly (14th, 29:16) and Demeonna McDuffie (16th, 31:03), hadn't finished ahead of Pelham's fifth runner, the race would have gone the other way. Top individual honors went to Paige Braswell of Bainbridge High. Braswell ran 21:51 for the 3.1 mile course, finishing nearly 800 meters ahead of runner-up Zakirra McKinnon (2nd, 25:37) of Valdosta.

The high school boys took the stage next in this cross-country debut. It's a mathematical impossibility for a team to lose a cross-country meet with a score of 27 points, and 27 points was what Bainbridge High's Bearcats tallied in the boys' 5K, led by the one-two finish of junior Chase Harris (17:48) and senior Dre Banks (18:57). Pelham's Guthrie Edwards finished third, running 19:08 for the home team. Led by the fourth-place 19:36 of frosh runner Matthew Baun, Valdosta took second in the team standings with 68 points.

The middle school race followed the high school races. The team competition for middle school girls mirrored that for high school girls in that Valdosta Middle School prevailed by a single point. This time it was Valdosta MS over Bainbridge MS, 32 to 33. Valdosta put a winning total together by putting three runners in the top four--Madeline Posse (1st, 13:50), Rachel Massingill (2nd, 15:16), and Sophia Noll (4th, 16:05)-- with Bainbridge's Uriyah Davis (3rd, 15:18) keeping the little Wildcats from sweeping the first three spots.

Led by the 11:40 first-place showing of seventh-grader Caleb Harris, Bainbridge Middle School edged out Valdosta Middle School by a single point, 35 to 36, for the title in the boys' two-mile race. It was extremely close, and the Early County Middle School runners actually tipped the balance--in a duel meet, with Early County missing, Valdosta would have beaten Bainbridge, 27 to 28. Such are the fortunes of cross-country. Noah Richards of Valdosta placed second in the individual standings with a 12:29, and Brandon Wombley of Early County was third in 12:58.

Wenzel wins while Aviles repeats at Pelham Wildlife Run

Pelham Wildlife Festival 2011Baconton Charter School distance runner Bryton Wenzel knocked off defending champion Chase Harris 13:26 to 13:34 in the Pelham Wildlife 5K on Saturday morning, 1 October 2011 in Pelham, Georgia. Pelham High's Urssula Aviles was more successful in defending her women's title, repeating as first female with a 16:27 and placing ninth overall. Thomasville, Georgia runner Chad Johnson (8th, 16:15) was the top master, and Julie Harris (25th, 18:55) of Bainbridge, Georgia was the first woman master to finish.

As you might guess from the times, the run was somewhat short of five kilometers. The lead vehicle took the runners off-course, resulting in an abbreviated race. It was a bad weekend in the area for short courses and general mishaps. The same morning, the Hustle For Haiti 5K was held on what many suspected to be a short course, as was the Big Bend Cares AIDS Run the following day. In Panama City, Florida Run for the Renascence 5K results were annotated with the notation "Estimated Delay Adjustment for bridge delay." If it was a curse, let's hope it has been lifted.
