O'Kelley and Chalmers capture the Run For Lawson

Autumn is cross-country season for the high schools and colleges in Florida and the rest of the United States. For high school athletes there are hundreds of cross-country running events scheduled during the season just in Florida. The menu is a little more limited for collegiate runners, but there are still plenty of options. For everyone else there are fewer choices. Some of the best are right here in Tallahassee, though, including the Run For Lawson. More than 300 runners chose the sixth annual Run For Lawson on Saturday, 22 October 2016, racing either 10K or 5K. Chris O'Kelley won the longer event, covering the 6.2 miles through Welaunee Plantation in 36:23. Juanita Chalmers was the first woman in the 10K, placing tenth overall in 45:47.

Jonathan Manry of Capital City Runners was second in the 10K, running 38:25. Mickey Moore was the top master runner in the race, placing third overall in 38:42. Master runner Gary Johnson was fourth in 42:56 and Ben Kirbo, a seventh-grader on the Holy Comforter cross-country team, was fifth in 43:00.

Florida State University student Emily Long was the second woman and eighteenth overall in 49:43. Maclay School frosh cross-country runner Avery Smith placed third in the women's standings and twentieth overall in 40:13. Paula O'Neill of Tallahassee was the first woman master and fourth female finisher, 21st overall in 50:54. Ormond Beach, Florida athlete Ashley Young was fifth on the women's side and 22nd overall in 51:02.

Eric Godin of Tallahassee won the shorter race, running the five kilometers in 18:24. Leo Kelly, a seventh-grader on the Holy Comforter cross-country team, took second in 19:42. Matthias Laywell, an alumnus of the John Paul II cross-country team, placed third in 20:26. Bill McNulty was the first master runner in the 5K and fourth overall in 20:31.

The Tallahassee Community College Eagles were well represented in the race, with members of their women's cross-country squad taking the first two spots in the women's standings of the 5K. Samantha Reilly took the women's title in 20:57, and Mia Wiederkeher was the women's runner-up in 22:14. Reilly and Wiederkehr were seventh and eighth overall. Sixteen-year-old Tallahassee athlete Kendall Ward was third on the women's side and fourteenth overall in 22:57. Krista Killius was the first woman master and fourth female finisher in the 5K, coming in eighteenth overall in 24:09. Another TCC harrier, Ellie Stubblefield, was the fifth woman and nineteenth overall in 24:24.

Vince Molosky returns to the top at Torreya

Tallahassee, Florida athlete Vince Molosky won the first seven Draggin' Tail Ultra Trail Challenges, each annual 50K race from 2008 to 2014. That streak ended in 2015 when Charn McAllister took the title, and Molosky had to settle for second best. On 2 April 2016, though, Molosky returned yet again to the trails of Florida's Torreya State Park and won the ninth annual Draggin' Tail 50K, running 4:57:01. While Molosky was earning his eighth championship, Juanita Chalmers was winning the women's division for the first time. Chalmers ran the race in 6:42:20, placing sixth overall.


Conditions were troubling in the hours before the race as a severe storm passed through. The Draggin' Tail Ultra Trail Challenge isn't totally immune to the weather. The 2009 race had to be postponed when a particularly wet spring caused the Apalachicola River to rise out of its banks, flooding many of the trails. A little bit a rain may never have hurt anyone, but it's hard to run on a course that's several fathoms underwater. But by the Saturday morning of the 2016 Draggin' Tail the storm was gone. Wet trails had been added to the Challenge, but the race went on.


Behind Molosky, Patrick Gallagher was the top master in the 50K, placing second overall in 5:14:40. Greg Bargo was third overall in 5:17:44, and 2015 champ Charn McAllister was fourth in 6:13:04.


Caroline Thomas was runner-up in the women's standings, coming in eighth overall in 6:50:40. Danielle Zemola edged Chrissy Coutts 7:16:43 to 7:16:44 for the third woman's spot, Zemola finishing eleventh overall and Coutts twelfth. Coutts was also the top woman master in the race.


24 athletes finished the 50K at the 2016 Draggin' Tail Ultra Challenge.

If 31 miles of running up and down the bluffs of the Apalachicola River on wet hiking trails was too much for you, there was always the Draggin' Tail 25K--the same, but only half as much of it. Tallahassee master runner Andy Roberts won the "short" race. Lydia Miles--a Wewahitchka, Florida master runner--took the women's title in 2:59:43, placing fifth overall. 55 athletes finished the 25K, the most ever in Draggin' Tail history.

Mission accomplished in Cairo for Harris and Chalmers

On Saturday morning, 18 May 2013, three weeks after closing out his freshman track season with the Berry College team, Kyle Harris was winning the seventh annual Missionette 10K in Cairo, Georgia. The Bainbridge, Georgia native ran the 6.2 miles through the Cairo countryside in 36:33, finishing over 600 meters ahead of the runner-up, Will White, a rising senior at Thomasville High School. White's time was 38:41. Tallahassee's Geb Kiros was the fastest master in the field, placing third in 39:57.


Tallahassee runner Juanita Chalmers topped the women's competition, finishing seventh overall in 45:07. The women's runner-up was Sarah Dugas of Tallahassee, 12th overall in 48:50. Another Tallahassee athlete, Paula O' Neill, was the third female finisher and first master woman, running 49:10 for 14th overall.

65 competitors finished the 10K, while another 130 completed a concurrently run 5K event. Bainbridge High School sophomore Chase Harris won the shorter race, covering the 3.1-mile course in 16:55. Another Bainbridge High runner, Dre Banks, finished runner-up in 18:29. Greg Waddell took top master runner honors in the 5K back to Bainbridge, finishing fourth overall in 19:23. Bowen Hudson of Thomasville, Georgia was the first female finisher in the 5K; her 24:54 was good for 19th overall. Julie Harris of Bainbridge was the first female master in the race, taking 24th overall in 26:34.


Both races were run on USATF certified courses.

Gibson, Chalmers rout rivals in River Run 10K

Finishing the race with a lead of almost 400 meters, Donalsonville, Georgia master runner Myles Gibson won the Bainbridge Kiwanis ninth annual River Run 10K in Bainbridge, Georgia's Earle May Park on Saturday morning, 19 January 2013. Gibson's ran the 6.2-mile course in 37:18. The first woman finisher was Juanita Chalmers of Tallahassee; Chalmers placed 11th overall in 46:07. Another Tallahassee athlete, Julie Clark, was the first female master in the race, finishing 23rd overall in 53:13. In a concurrent 5K race, Bainbridge High School cross-country standout Chase Harris took the title with a course-record run of 17:14. Tallahassee lawyer Sheryl Rosen set a women's course record in the 5K, taking the women's title in 19:00.


It was a chilly morning along the Flint River when over 100 athletes assembled in Earle May Park for the races. They started at 8:00 AM. By the end of the first mile, Myles Gibson was leading the 10K field, with Mickey Moore and Eric Bernard trailing him by half a minute. About halfway through the race Moore shook off Bernard, taking sole possession of second. By then, though, Gibson had widened his lead to over a minute. Gibson further opened the gap during the second half of the race, going on to win in 37:18. Tallahassee master runner Mickey Moore was runner-up in 38:54, with Eric Bernard taking third in 41:08.


Juanita Chalmers also took command of her race early, ending the first mile more than half a minute ahead of the next woman in the 10K, Tallahassee's Martha Bademan. Chalmers added another half minute to that margin during the second mile, and continued to pull away at about the same rate for the rest of the race. At the finish line Chalmers was over 700 meters ahead, beating Bademan 46:07 to 49:48. Shrugging off some early challengers, Tallahassee's Julie Clark was the third female finisher and the first woman master, running 53:13.


62 runners completed the 10K.

In 2012, Chase Harris had watched from third place while Luis Navarro won the River Run 5K in a course-record 17:20. In this year's 5K, Harris was setting the pace almost from the start, with Tim Carr right behind. Harris led the race through the mile in 5:25 with Carr a few steps behind. After that, Harris just ran away from Carr, ultimately prevailing 17:14 to 18:34 and breaking the old course record by six seconds. Finishing her 5K before the runner-up had passed the 4K, mark, Sheryl Rosen won the women's competition, placing third overall in 19:00 and shattering Jana Stolting's five-year-old course record of 19:28. 47 athletes completed the 5K.
