Nijal Sanders and Zita Magloire make it a Cairo sweep at the Jackie Robinson Boys & Girls Club 5K

The South Georgia cities of Cairo and Thomasville are less than fifteen miles apart on US 84. Cairo is the county seat of Grady County, Thomasville is the same for Thomas County. Cairo High plays Thomasville High in football, as well as other sports. And on Saturday morning, 11 May 2019, Nijal Sanders of Cairo and Chris Holt of Thomasville were racing on the streets of Cairo for the title in the Jackie Robinson Boys and Girls Club's sixth annual Marshell Wilcox Memorial 5K. Sanders took first, edging Holt 20:34 to 20:40. Cairo physician Zita Magloire was the first woman in the race, placing third overall in 21:10, making it a Syrup City sweep.


It was Sanders' best showing yet in the race, where he had finished fifth in 2016 and fourth in 2017. Behind the dueling Sanders and Holt, Joe Carter was third in the men's standings, coming in fourth overall in 21:55.


A graduating senior at Cairo High, men's champ Nijal Sanders had a full career of running both cross-country and track for the Syrupmakers. Likewise, women's champ Zita Magloire had run for Chiles High and Mississippi State University. Magloire's win was her second at the Jackie Robinson Boys and Girls Club 5K; she had also won the race in 2018. Stefanie Mandez was second to Magloire on the women's side, placing ninth overall in 27:26. Whitney Salapa was the third woman and eleventh overall in 28:59.


115 athletes finished the Jackie Robinson Boys and Girls Club's 2019 Marshell Wilcox Memorial 5K.

Higdon and Rosen win Cairo's Marshell Wilcox 5K

In August 2014 the Jackie Robinson Boys & Girls Club of Cairo, Georgia staged their first annual 5K in memory of Marshell Wilcox, who had passed away the previous year. In 2016 the club moved the race to May, and Nathan Higdon finished second overall. On Saturday morning, 13 May 2017, the Marshell Wilcox Memorial 5K returned to the spring racing schedule and Nathan Higdon returned to the race. This time around fourteen-year-old Higdon won it all, running 19:26. Tallahassee lawyer Sheryl Rosen took the women's title, finishing second overall in 19:38.


Zachery Bernabe, a junior on the Cairo High cross-country team, was second in the men's standings and third overall in 19:56. Bernabe was Cairo's best 1600/3200 meter runner during the 2017 track season, running 5:26.89 and 11:53.19. Cairo High's top 800 meter runner during 2017, Nijal Sanders, was the third male and fourth overall in the Wilcox Memorial 5K at 21:21. Florida A&M University philosophy professor Mike LaBossiere was the fastest master runner in the race and the fifth male finisher, placing sixth overall in 22:56.


Kelley El-Urfali of Crawfordville, Florida was the first woman master and second female finisher, coming in twelfth overall. Keshia Cooper placed third in the women's standings and thirteenth overall in 28:06.


88 athletes finished the fourth annual Marshell Wilcox Memorial 5K.

Mission accomplished in Cairo for Harris and Chalmers

On Saturday morning, 18 May 2013, three weeks after closing out his freshman track season with the Berry College team, Kyle Harris was winning the seventh annual Missionette 10K in Cairo, Georgia. The Bainbridge, Georgia native ran the 6.2 miles through the Cairo countryside in 36:33, finishing over 600 meters ahead of the runner-up, Will White, a rising senior at Thomasville High School. White's time was 38:41. Tallahassee's Geb Kiros was the fastest master in the field, placing third in 39:57.


Tallahassee runner Juanita Chalmers topped the women's competition, finishing seventh overall in 45:07. The women's runner-up was Sarah Dugas of Tallahassee, 12th overall in 48:50. Another Tallahassee athlete, Paula O' Neill, was the third female finisher and first master woman, running 49:10 for 14th overall.

65 competitors finished the 10K, while another 130 completed a concurrently run 5K event. Bainbridge High School sophomore Chase Harris won the shorter race, covering the 3.1-mile course in 16:55. Another Bainbridge High runner, Dre Banks, finished runner-up in 18:29. Greg Waddell took top master runner honors in the 5K back to Bainbridge, finishing fourth overall in 19:23. Bowen Hudson of Thomasville, Georgia was the first female finisher in the 5K; her 24:54 was good for 19th overall. Julie Harris of Bainbridge was the first female master in the race, taking 24th overall in 26:34.


Both races were run on USATF certified courses.
